2015-2016 Albert Einstein College of Medicine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering if anyone who has interviews coming up would like to do a mock interview session over Skype. We'd interview each other and provide feedback and advice. I've done a couple of these already with people form SDN and they seem to be very mutually beneficial. PM me if you're interested and we can set something up soon!
Stop spamming. Jesus my phone just exploded.

I like turtles

Thank you both! Would you happen to have a rough idea of what the fares are, one way?
Isn't there a school shuttle that can take you from the airport?

http://www.einstein.yu.edu/education/md-program/admissions/interview-confirmation.aspx
"EINSTEIN AIRPORT TRANSFER. You can also contact them at 914-965-6776. They charge $50 from LaGuardia or Kennedy and $80 from Newark. If they pick up or return a few applicants at the same time, they will divide the cost. The day of your interview, you can ask Mary Pace if there are other applicants going back to the airport. To share costs on your way to Einstein, contact Allways directly"

II on November 20, got the complete email on 10/16.

I'm not sure if I should attend this interview as I'm running low on funds and haven't been able to speak with anyone about this program. Can any recent interviewees or current students share their experience with Einstein thus far? Thanks!

Current MS1 here. So in terms of the interview, it is very low stress and more conversational. That is a pretty common theme throughout the school and interview day. There are no formal interview presentations (basically show up in regular clothes, get changed- there is a changing area to my knowledge, complete your interview, lunch, tour (with MS1+MS2's) and then you can leave). Some people interview after the tour but almost everyone is done by 3pm-4pm. There is also free applicant housing where you spend the night at a med students apartment and it is free and public transportation is available to the airports (might take 1.5 hours to JFK).

In terms of the actual school, there are a bunch of global health/research opportunities available throughout the four years of medical school. Some people choose to go to other countries like Ethiopia, Ghana, India to do global health work, others choose to do bench research and yet others choose clinical research. Also, there are a ton of student groups/clubs which are geared toward specific interests (ie. OTIG-organ transplant interest group, SIG-surgery interest group, AMSA, ECHO Clinic, HEART-rapid HIV testing, etc)

Student housing is provided (you can choose to live off campus if you wish) to everyone for all four years. Basically you send in some forms and you are guaranteed housing for four years (it is cheap and literally across the street from campus). Also, for all four years, transportation is provided to your clinical sites (shuttles run between most clinical sites and if they don't they will get you there using a variety of other means).

It is completely pass/fail for the first two years and there are no internal rankings. I can tell you from experience that this school has one of the most collaborative environments I have been apart of. People are always posting their notes, figures, hints/tips on the facebook page.

Sorry if I rambled on but I just wanted to give you and everyone else a little snapshot of Einstein. Like everything in life it isn't perfect but it works for me and a majority of my classmates.

Just got the complete email today- how long after the complete e-mail have people heard back?

What's the best way to get here from Rochester without flying! I was thinking the Trailways bus which stops at Port Authority Bus Terminal, and then taking uber to the Bronx? Clueless from CA... help!!!

Maybe also look into Megabus.

Just a note that you don't need a uber from Penn Station unless it's raining. There are taxi stands right outside. Save yourself a surcharge.

A rental car actually might be a reasonable option, although I don't know what kind of parking Einstein offers. My big concern with a bus is that it is a LONG ride with many potential pit falls and not enough chances to stretch your legs. Going straight from that to your interview sounds pretty stressful to me.

Current MS-1 here

From Penn Station, its pretty easy to get here on the subway. I highly highly recommend downloading the app Citymapper. It will tell you how to get anywhere in the city via taxi, bus, and/or train. Taxis tend to overcharge people who are new to the city (or they take longer routes), so if you don't look like a New Yorker, I recommend uber 9 times out of 10. That 1 time out of 10 is when someone else is paying for the taxi.

You may also just want to take a plane to laguardia airport. Quick trip. Then take a yellow taxi right outside of the airport. It is a flat fee to anywhere within the five boroughs ( including the Bronx). Not sure of the fee now ( probably 50 dollars) but that's the easiest way. I know my way around the busses and subways in the Bronx but if may be stressful if you're not familiar. I know you don't want to fly though, just a suggestion

Does anyone know if Einstein is receptive to updates/letter of interest?

To anyone who's interviewing or has interviewed already, how long does it take them to get back to you about student hosting? I emailed them a week or so ago, but haven't heard back yet.

It took them just under a month to get back to me. Which sucked, because I had already arranged somewhere else to stay by then... Oh well.

From the admissions website:
To help familiarize applicants with the Einstein environment and student body and to help defray costs, applicants who would prefer to stay at Einstein the night before their interview are invited to request overnight housing with an Einstein student. Such requests should be made to the admissions office when scheduling your interview by e-mailing [email protected].

Here are more specific instructions from the interview invite information page:
Overnight Housing - Next, there is some overnight housing available with our students. If you are interested, please send us a separate email with the words, "Overnight Housing" on the "Subject" line of your email to Ms. Joan Lazarou at [email protected]. We would like to be sure we can answer your questions about any special needs or interests you may have, or groups that are on campus, please let us know and we will arrange it for you.

They assigned me a host only 3 days after I contacted them. I think it depends though. Another school I interviewed took several weeks

Just FYI for anyone who's wondering: as I was scheduling, January dates were getting snapped up. But there are open dates in early February and I believe Einstein interviews through late April?

II moments ago. Average stats with strong research centered EC. Good luck everyone is still waiting! It's a long process but is still ongoing.

Can anyone share interview experiences
here?
Congrats. Do you mind sharing complete date?

edit: woops! someone just asked you that, my b 🙂

For those saying complete late August.. Is this when you submitted your materials or when you actually got a complete email?

Because my materials were in 8/20 but I was complete by email until 10/14

What username did you guys use to sign into the interview invite portal? Is it your email? I used the info from my secondary login (my email as the username) and it didn't work 🙁 But I was able to sign into my secondary....

I used my email and the same password that I use for the secondary portal and that worked for me.

Don't give up yet, guys! It says on their website that they interview through April and that there will be spots available for folks who interview towards the end! Just scheduled my interview for early Feb. It's not over yet...

Yet being the operative word. I'm not a pessimist, just a realist, as I assume most of us who haven't gotten II's are . If we submitted in July/August, and its near mid-December, chances are very slim. Too bad cuz this is my first choice. My motto: You get what you get, and you don't get upset.
