2015-2016 Columbia University College of P&S Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a question you guys! I have a friend who had his interview at Columbia P&S and he told me that his interview was very odd. Since, they talked about all sorts of stuff. So, I don't know if it is a good sign or not. If anyone had a similar experience and expect good things out of it. That would be great 🙂

This is probably the norm here for interviews 😛

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back. Columbia is one of my top choices for med school.

Doesn't Columbia follow other Ivies and wait until March to release the results?

For those who have and upcoming interview here, try to relax because like the posters above, I also enjoyed it more than any other I've had.

Neurotroph, did you have multiple interviews?

Oh ok, I think they do those separately and differently from the standard MD interviews (only 1 interview). Good luck 🙂

This is the last week I believe. The earliest date I was offered was Jan 19th.

Out of curiosity, when were you extended an interview? When were you complete? If you don't mind, that is. I ask because it sounds like you might have received the offer not long ago, and yet, as you mentioned, the interview trail is ending shortly...

Sure, I don't mind at all! I received the invitation Jan 6 and the earliest date was the 19th, with several dates available, this being the last week.

Also I submitted my application the first week of June and was complete the last week in June. My first interview was August 28, so this was definitely a late notice for me.

Are you sure columbia waits until march to tell people they are accepted? On mdapplicants, someone updated today that they got accepted to columbia, cornell, and nyu

They released in february last year, though it's possible that either bassett or 3 year phd to md or a linkage program or something releases earlier.

Columbia said at interview they release mid-february and Cornell said god knows how many times that they don't even select the class until March, so I'd take that with all the grains of salt you can find

Edit: Or as Wedge said maybe that person isn't regular MD track

Question: anyone in here have no/limited research and get an interview?

They released on Wednesday, February 11th last year, to be exact.

Interview reviews:

Going to school in Manhattan is unmatched. Great research. Great faculty. Great interview. The emphasis on medical student extracurriculars was a bit annoying.

Grade: A

Am MD/PhD person got accepted today. So maybe it is that they get their decisions earlier

I sent a thank-you email to my interviewer shortly after interviewing in December, but I forgot to upload a copy onto the portal T.T
Do you guys think it would be weird if I did it now...

I'm still at least a year away from applying, but I think it'd be pointless to upload it now after all that time. In any case, someone on this site provided a resource to some Harvard med school interview advice, and they said to always send a handwritten thank you letter, so I'd guess that it doesn't matter if you didn't upload it?

I don't think hand-written notes are necessary, at least from my personal experience. I emailed thank-you notes to my interviewers at each school, and most responded with a nice note in return. Nowadays, I think interviewers know how busy medical school applicants are and wouldn't expect or value a hand-written note over an electronic one.

That being said, sending a thank-you note over a month after your interview would seem a bit odd.. I probably wouldn't do it.

Ok so basically I'm seeing all these threads essentially saying all you need is a pulse to become a pharmacist/ PA...

So, worst case scenario, is this what anyone here will do? Like if they don't get into med school?

Please dont take offense to this, but why do you keep bumping this thread with questions/comments that don't belong here? I get that you're excited to apply in the future, but it's kind of annoying for those of us that are applying now. Your questions/comments are better suited for the general pre-med section.

In any case, I don't think becoming a pharmacist or a PA is as easy as having "a pulse", but it is definitely easier than getting accepted into an MD though.

Everything, except arguably my last comment, was related to discussion. Saying that someone got an acceptance, and responding to a question someone else posed.

I know tensions might be running high due to decisions (hopefully) coming out in the next couple of weeks, but let's do our best to stay on topic please! Questions that are valid but don't necessarily relate to Columbia should take place in their own threads or in currently existing threads in pre-allo. Thanks, and good luck everyone!

Does anyone know if Columbia has a deferment policy?
I don't know of an official policy, but I do know classmates who took a year between acceptance and matriculation. My understanding is that it's worked out on a case-by-case basis. Generally, if you have good reasons, administration tends to be pretty flexible and supportive.

Yes. They just throw PharmD degrees at anyone and everyone /s

Thank you! I might have a Rotary International Grant next year to do an MPH abroad and I would love to take it. Obviously this is all hypothetical considering I get in in the first place.

Columbia's last interview date was last week based on an email sent by admissions to someone who needed to reschedule due to flight cancellations.

One piece of advice I have is make sure that Columbia has your most up to date phone number (preferably your cell). This will save you the trouble of what I went through last year where I didn't get my acceptance until a day after everyone else.

On the day when phone calls go out, don't you get an email if you were not immediately accepted? Or do people not get anything if they are not accepted?

All the emails (good and bad) came out at roughly the same time, which was the day after people got calls.

Just received an email from Columbia saying that they will be sending out decisions soon and recommending me to verify my application log in information.
I only got moderately terrified at the lack of "OMG CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!" that I've seen on other acceptance letters before realizing that they just wanted us to make sure our phone numbers and emails were right

EXACTLY. i thought i was about to open a rejection email when i saw the email title and panicked.

Did anyone who hasn't interviewed get that email?
