2015-2016 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So if you've taken classes at a couple community colleges before transferring to uni, they require a letter from all 3?
Okay tell me the layout on the supplemental app PDF doesn't add to the confusion:

I'm just letting this one lie. I'm under review. It says no changes can be made. But I do wish I knew... Maybe it was clearer in the actual secondary, but I can't remember. Anyone still working on it?

Yes, just a second....

Edit: it doesn't really clear much up in terms of explanations, just has spaces to fill in the information about your committee letter "OR" your advisor (optional), science faculty 1 (required), science faculty 2 (required), non-science faculty (required) and two additional letters if you choose.

I'd take a screen shot but it's choc full of personal info. Hope this helps.

It helps me feel like less of an idiot if I did it wrong, so yes!

Thanks much. 🙂

anyone else still not have the secondary? I submitted the AMCAS on day 1, I didn't think they screened...although my committee letter was just uploaded today, so maybe it has something to do with that?

Hi there all! Started searching this forum, but figured I'd just post and save myself some time. I had my AMCAS verified 7/24/15 (not as early as most of you it seems 😛 ) and haven't heard anything from Loyola, but my other schools have all pinged back. Just wondering if anyone else who was verified about the same time as me has gotten a secondary or even an email?

Thanks,
Stressed and Slightly Concerned

I'm sorry to tell you, but I share your verified date and I got the secondary invite about a week later. I would reach out to them, but there is loads of time so
Don't worry too much. I know for certain that the office takes calls from applicants on Thursdays. I don't know about the rest of the week. Good luck.

Hey I had the exact same problem and I called the office and they said they sent me the secondary but I could not find it anywhere. There must be some issue with their email. Once I made sure I was supposed to get the secondary I got the application website from a friend, requested a new password and submitted. I know it sucks but I'll be happy to give you the app site if you need it

I've heard that Loyola rejects applicants with high numbers, because they most likely won't attend. Thoughts?

I don't know for sure about Loyola, but people say this about many schools, and it isn't wholly true for most schools that people say this about. It is true in the sense that some schools are naturally more selective of high stat applicants because it seems like they could just be using a low or mid tier school as a "safety." It is not true in the sense that mid or low tier schools don't just screen these applicants out without reading their applications. Rather, they'll reject you if you don't do a good job of showing that you're actually interested in their school.

Moral of the story: if you're a high stats applicant applying to a mid or low tier school, make sure you illustrate why you're actually interested and that you're not merely using them as a "safety."

thank you for the help and inspiration.

I had the same issue and notified the admissions office. The woman on the other line stayed on the phone with me to make sure I received a secondary from her personally. Make sure you do this because they will make note of it in your file which lets the adcom reader know that you weren't just super late with submitting the secondary. @spaingirl17

This is the worst/on the verge of a funny story:
I called Loyola today, spoke with someone who was incredibly sweet about helping me through some kinks in my application, and finished the call safely.
I then called UIC about some issues as well, and wanted to call back to give a follow-up...
Guess what?
I called Loyola.
And I didn't realize until the really kind lady on the other line went "uh... this is Loyola though?"
My face turned so beet red, and I have never felt that hot on my face my entire life. Thankfully, she seemed to laugh about it, so hopefully she won't tell adcom (or may be she was adcom...) that I am a big derp who doesn't know how to dial numbers.

MORAL OF THE STORY/TL;DR: CHECK YOUR PHONE NUMBERS BEFORE YOU CALL. PLEASE.

Your story made my morning!

I finally submitted this secondary!

I didn't realize that they were asking for a reason why I wasn't submitting the optional advisor letter, so I replied that my undergrad doesn't have a pre-medical committee. We have pre-med advisors, they just aren't any good so I never used one and would never ask one for a letter! Hopefully they don't ding me for that.

Same, we had advisors that do Pre-med stuff too, but were not that useful, only suggested classes to take, and the order to take them in. I used SDN and other resources, so I just wrote something similar to what you said. Seems sort of odd, especially for those of us who have been out of school for awhile.

have yet to receive an II from them 🙁 submitted almost a month ago!

They probably have not gotten to your application yet. I think you can tell by your status on the portal whether you have been reviewed and placed on hold, or whether you're still being reviewed.

My status says "currently being reviewed." but i think it has said that for a while lol

I'm pretty sure that is the status that means they aren't done reviewing it for the first time yet.

Yeah, I know they get a lot of applicants and most adcoms will tell you that your application isn't necessarily reviewed in order of when you submit them. I think some schools have multiple reviewers and others just have one, so you can't really predict how fast a particular reviewer will get to your app.

I submitted 7/11 and I'm still under review, so best best is to just stay patient. As impossible as that may be at this point 🙂.

I am stuck on this question....any pointers of how to address this...I started writing about community service but then I was given feedback that what I wrote did not answer the question.... I felt becoming a person for others could show in devotion to community service or something you do annually to help the community right?? I mean its only 500 words so I cant say tooo much and my answer to the diversity question could fit here too. any helps or ideas would be great.

1) Becoming a person for others is a core Jesuit value. Please describe your own development in becoming a person for others. How have you demonstrated this value?

You could write about community service and it may answer the question, but it depends upon how you write about it. Did your community service change your outlook and make you more dedicated to the people around you? If so, did you communicate this in your essay?

I took the opportunity to give a history of my volunteership from high school to current, and how it changed me

IMHO, I have not received an II for this school yet., so take with a grain of salt.
I approached this question in a very personal matter. I used an instance where I did something "significant" helping out someone and it felt very fulfilling. From then moment one, I started to seek opportunities that allowed me to serve others and so on. I think that there are many ways to approach this question. I believe "that situation/activity" is of less importance compared to how you are going to describe it and what it meant for you personally. The feeling of giving/helping out others is difficult to describe in words (for me at least) but it is extremely fulfilling. I like to approach this type of questions with an "altruistic" set of mind.

Thanks all for the advice! and I just realized I was writing 500 characters not words.....so my answer was maybe 90 words.....ok now I can add a little more about one experience.

Hint: figure out some Jesuit values (I.e., magis, cura personalis). It'll get you some brownie points I'm sure.

For those who have already gotten IIs (congrats btw!) were any of you notified by phone or was it all via email?

For those who have gotten interview invites was there some interview tab on the portal that showed you available dates?

Did it also show up on your portal?

There was a link for picking dates in my portal once I'd gotten the II email, but I hadn't checked the portal since submitting my secondary so no idea when that link appeared.

did anyone receive a complete email from loyola after submitting the secondary?

No, but the portal will list when your secondary is received and you will get an 'under review' status when you log in.

has anyone who has received an interview gotten word about the student host program yet? i have been told they are looking for a host but i'd like to know earlier than one week ahead if i need to book a hotel or not

@M.MD

how big is SSOM on research? There seems to be a lot more emphasis on community outreach?
are all 4 years graded with the pass, fail, honors system? do you think this makes students competitive with each other?

1. There is a heavy emphasis on community service at Stritch, but it's still a big research institution (with another big research center next door at Hines) and there's plenty of PIs eager for med students to help them with their projects. I'm more research-oriented and have had no shortage of opportunities here.
2. The grading system is class dependent, most are H/HP/P/F. I don't think it makes people more competitive because there's no curve, so everyone who wants honors can get honors.
