2015-2016 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Both are good scores. 513 is roughly ~ 33 on the old test. Why did you decide to retake the new one when your first score was so very decent, if you dont mind my asking?
I guess I was hoping for higher but basically I completed a masters program..and they suggested to take the new MCAT if I wanted to apply to their med school.

Fair enough. We pre-meds are an interesting breed. I got a 513 too, but I wish it were higher! Lol. I can't tell if we are drawn to medicine because we are this way, or if the process brings it out of us. Probably both I guess. Good luck to you!

Good Luck to you too!!!

I was on a Tuesday. 9/1 specifically
Small detail but the "15 other candidates" only applies to weekend interviews, unless they changed something since last year. If you're interviewing on a weekday you'll be in a group of around 4 people.

I think they changed some things around this year. I gave a weekday tour a couple weeks ago and there were about 14 applicants interviewing that day!

Tfw you've been "under review" since 8/11

Try being under review since 7/16. 🙁

Can any M3/M4's and alumni speak to how well Loyola prepares you for Step 1, clinical rotations, and residency applications? Thanks~ 😉

Also got an II just now (as I sit on the bus to go to another interview lol). Complete 7/10, IS, LizzyM ~72-73. Interview scheduled for October 26th. So glad to get an interview invite from somewhere back home!

Edit: anyone know what the post interview acceptance rate is?

It looks to be about 75% based on the admissions section on their website with last years stats.

II 🙂

...Does anyone have the link to the portal for the Loyola application? I think I lost it

This might sound like a dumb question, but we don't need to bring anything with us on interview day right? (As in, no need to bring resumes or whatnot).

No, I don't think so. They didn't mention anything specific on the info sheet, at least.

They did not ask for any additional materials from me during the interview. That said, I read in a med school interview book that it's a good idea to bring copies of your application and abstracts from any papers/posters/theses that you may have on your application. Good luck!

The last few times the latter suggestion was brought up to adcoms on here, they said it was unnecessary (or even a bad idea).

It's probably unnecessary but I cannot see how it's a bad idea. No one asked for it so no one knew I even brought it.

I think the idea was that if you whipped either of those out without being asked to, you would come across as...overly intense...and that you wouldn't be asked for it.

Anyone who has interviewed here already... do you recommend a particular place to stay from their list of places? I'm especially interested in any airport shuttle services provided by these hotels, or maybe even shuttles going from the hotel to Loyola. Thanks in advance!

For what it's worth, I recommend staying with a student host. I got an insider's view of the social dynamic of the school and a stress free ride to the school in the morning. I also got to see the town that most students live and hang out in. And my interviewer responded quite positively to the fact that I stayed with a student host, saying it showed I wanted to learn about the program and the school.

I thought about that, but I'm working during the day and taking an evening flight into Chicago so I don't think staying with a student host would really work... Definitely want to learn about the school but I can't take anymore days off work lol.

Thanks for the advice! How did you go about finding a student host? Did you just e-mail the admissions office?

Totally makes sense. I know there are hotels that are close to the school, but cannot comment about any of them. I do know that the students said that the traffic can be really bad some days, taking 30 minutes to drive from oak park (where most students live) to the school, which otherwise would take 5 minutes with no traffic. So just make sure you plan for extra time in your morning commute.

Yup! They mentioned it in the pdf detailing the interview day that they send you when you get an interview. I emailed the admissions office and they sent me the email address of a student who volunteered to be a host.

Good luck you two!

I found some reasonably priced hotels nearby by using google maps / hotels.com
BTW if any OOSers need a ride to the airport after interview day on 10/6, feel free to PM me!

I'd recommend the Carleton of Oak Park if you're looking for a hotel (not Ritz-Carlton hehe). It's a little pricier than some of the other options but it's the only hotel close to downtown Oak Park. You'll get a good feel for the area staying there.

Do you get a complete email from Loyola or are you just "complete" when you submit the secondary?

Not sure if this was posted here previously but can anyone speak to how interview day went? I'll be here next week and I wanted to hear some opinions from other interviewees and Even current Med students.

Super relaxed interviews! You'll typically have one student interview and one faculty interview and they'll basically just ask you the typical questions plus questions about your app specifically. I was also asked a couple simple ethical questions as well as my thoughts on obamacare (nothing too specific). Know you and your app well and you should be fine! You've made it this far and they're really just trying to see how you interact with others 🙂
