2015-2016 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@lifeguardpat @radish2 Thank you very much for your insight regarding the interview day! Very much appreciated!

Another question: Has anyone heard anything about the new medhound med school rankings site? A friend told me about it so I have been checking it out. Seemed pretty cool so I thought I'd share. Was curious to see what others thought about it. Thanks!
Not sure the $10 is really worth it considering the match lists are all publicly available, some even posted on SDN http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/match-lists-2015.1126577/

I got MedHound the other day just to see what it's like. By their approximations, Loyola is a great school (no doubt that it is). But sometimes things get a little weird (U Chicago is about the same in many of their rankings as Rosalind Franklin?). It's an interesting tool, but ultimately I don't think it will have any impact on my decision.
Uchicago ranked the same as Rosalind?! thats crazy

They have many different ways to "rank" the schools. The most "comprehensive" is the "overall bark" ranking, which combines the rankings based on average step 1 scores of residencies that students place into and the competitiveness of those residencies. Based on this data, RFUMS (and Loyola!) is about the same as Pritzker, and both are well above Vandy. The attached image is a screenshot of part of the rankings. Stanford is at the top of this one with a ranking around 96.

congrats everyone who's gotten an II today! praying I get one! complete around the same time. do they email or call?

For all decisions scheduled to be released on the 15th, will there be an email/portal update on that date for everyone receiving a decision regardless of the result, or would it just depend on receiving a call vs. not receiving a call?

Portal doesn't update until a day or two after the 15th. It's pretty much you get a call that day or don't. But I got my call at 8:15pm eastern time so don't worry if it's taking an agonizing amount of time.

Omg that's torture.

Does anyone know how many people get accepted outright vs chances to be put on the waitlist? I'm going to be heartbroken if it's another waitlist 🙁
Also wondering this. 3 interviews --> 3 waitlists so far for me, and I'm so in love with Loyola...

I see.. I also think some of the medical students will choose to stay in-state even if those residencies might not be as competitive, which places the school at a lower ranking. Needless to say, still excited to matriculate at Loyola next fall 🙂

If you don't answer the call, will they leave a message? I have a final exam on the 15th so I won't be able to answer my phone for a good chunk of the day.

@MD_Hopeful_2020 @DJS0825 I agree, I had similar thoughts after checking it out. Thought it was cool to see how schools stacked up based on match data though. Interesting approach. Anyways, thanks for your feedback!

This happened to me--they just say "this is so-and-so at Loyola, if you could call me back at X number that would be great" but there are no rejection phone calls so you know it's good news when you call back!

If you check the admissions website, Loyola makes offers (eventually) to 80% of applicants who are interviewed. Due to this, they are much more selective when sending interview invites than most schools, but less selective post-interview. aka if you got the interview, you can expect a straight (probably good) answer on December 15th.

That reminds me. I know the website says ~80% of interviewees get accepted, but I asked some current students on my interview day if that was true and they said they thought it definitely wasn't and that it was probably closer to around 50%. So now I am kind of confused.

Looking at the numbers I think it's safe to assume Loyola accepts between 60-77% of the candidates they interview. My numbers are generated from this equation: 567 interviewed, 154 matriculated, my understanding is we can assume privates will have a 25-45% yield ( 25-45 offered matriculate). At 45% yield, 344 of the 567 (60%) would have to be offered, 40% yield, 386/567 (68%), and 35% yield, 440/567 (77%). If anyone knows Loyola's yield then it's an easy calculation but I'm going to safely guess they offer at least 6 out of every 1o interviewed and probably closer to 7/10.

Their numbers seem pretty specific to just be "making it up" haha

My status just changed to "
  • Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in March. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail. "

so you're reading this status change as a hold or deferred?

what number on this overall list is loyola? (if they are ranked numerically other than a score)

I just got back my grade for a science class I took this semester. What format should I send an update? Just a paragraph explaining the class I took and the grade? Should I include other things outside of class?

Yes, because you are more than just a grade, think about their motto and their mission.

Do you guys think most of the acceptances come from the waitlist or outright? Just curious, because it seems that last year, a decent chunk was put on the wait-list and didn't find out until the snail-mail results. And do they make calls over multiple days or just the day they release acceptances? The closer it's getting to 12/15, the more worried I am...

I JUST WANT ONE MD ACCEPTANCE PLZ

Paragraph format definitely and you should include activities outside of class that weren't included on your application.

Been under review since July. I'm hoping for a II from here...

Hey All

Does anyone have thoughts on a post interview, but pre-decision LOI? Normally I wouldn't even ask because I know it sounds over eager, but I interviewed in early Sept, was passed over on the Oct 15th decision day, and right now my app status seems to be some kind of hold. I'm kinda in love with Loyola, I think I'm a really good fit for them, and I really, really want to get accepted here. I'm worried though because I know my nerves got the best of me on interview day.

Anyway. Any input is appreciated!

If you have any updates to your application (new activity, grades, etc) I would definitely send those while also stating your continued interest in the school-- an update letter and LOI combo. Since decisions come out Dec 15, I'd get right on that! I hope we both get in on Tuesday!! I totally feel the same way about Loyola. The more I talked to the students and faculty on my interview day the more I realized that I would really be happy there.

SooOoooOo... is anyone else getting extremely anxious the closer it gets to decision date?

I have a final tomorrow too, so the combined nervousness is pretty bad.
I wonder if they tend to do the calls early in the day.

No idea...apparently they will call pretty late into the day though. Which means a whole day of clinging to my phone for dear life =/ I'm really banking on Loyola right now...I can see myself here (and I can't say the same for all the schools I've interviewed at) so =/

Haha so if I get the call, it'll probably be when I'm at work, which is where I found out about my first acceptance.
Tbh though I'm not expecting much after my nightmare interview here lol.
I hope you get accepted!

not really nervous because I already have an acceptance, but certainly would like to have another, especially because I did like my time at loyola. If I didnt have an acceptance id be asking my professor to let me have my phone on. If they called I could say "Thanks for this fantastic offer, may I ask what kind of grades I need to receive to not get this offer withdrawn?" if they say I just have to pass I would stand up and pass my final in

After over 2 months of waiting to hear back after my interview, I think I've lost emotional capacity to react to whatever decision gets made tomorrow. I'm just happy it'll be over.
