2015-2016 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm posting to defend avgn because I think his/her post was taken way out of hand. Use some sense, if he/she admits that they came just to see other people posting about it, its likely they reacted the same way they expected others to react. I don't understand the hostility.

I think we all came here for the same reason.

If they had admitted to that in their first post, sure...but their first post made it seem as if their only reaction was "haha, I bet silly people are freaking out over this on SDN". They set themselves apart from the group while mocking it, rather than joining it and then mocking themselves along with the rest, which is what most other people are doing. Semantics matter in how you come across.

It's a trend in their posts here and on other threads...time and time again I find myself restraining myself from reacting to what comes across very strongly in their posts as condescension, when I've learned over time that they do not mean it that way. And sometimes, like this one, I don't succeed in that restraint.

Strangely, that impression never occurred to me, I thought it was obvious that we were all coming to this thread for that exact reason. Perhaps the issue was not with the content of the post but with your own pre-conceptions of the poster 🙂

Thanks, appreciate it. People take SDN too seriously. I ain't mad, everybody just move along with real life and suppress their inner online politeness warriors

@avg - I don't think you are hostile, yet your wordings may rub ppl the wrong way (condescending tone).

Hey guys, sorry to selfishly bump my post. Maybe it will help change the topic?

To those who have interviewed, does NYU do a straight-up MMI? I am just wondering if it is worth reading up extensively on the school as one would to prepare for "why NYU"-type questions. I am not sure if NYU's MMI leaves any room for such interaction, or if it is just based on unrelated prompts. Thanks!

I'm hardly the only one who reacted that way to the post, and nobody else's post seems to be getting such a reaction. I understand that not everyone will read it that way, but it is drawing a higher percentage of misinterpretations than the average post

I don't know, but fortunately there's now a Twitter conversation scheduled for when you can get the most reliable answers possible for that!

Hey,
So the format is 7 MMIs and 1 "traditional" interview (though it is only about 12 minutes). In the interview portion, I was asked some standard questions: Why medicine? Why our school? What do you do to deal with stress?
Hope this helps!

Dear NYU,
It is cruel of you to send an email that begins
"mehc,

I would like to invite you to..."

...to applicants who have not yet received an II, especially when it's just to a twitter chat and your subject line was too long to display properly on mobile devices (thus the first lines being what are read first).

Sincerely,
mehc012

That email definitely made me want to come to the school less. It just seems so distasteful, almost taunting. It's not like we're so helpless we can't:

1) ask previous interviewees how the MMI/interview day goes
2) just Google MMI to figure out what it's all about

I'm also fairly sure that the questions everyone wants answered won't actually be answered

Has anyone been rejected yet?

I think NYU is one of those "silent rejection" schools.

According to their schedule posted on good ole Twitter they send out all final decisions in January

On interview day we were told that all decisions including waitlists and rejections will be released by February. There won't be silent rejections.

Now that I think about it in retrospect.... I must apologize to @avgn and sympathize with him. I have resting bitch face, tone, and life...

I bet his sarcasm is just like mine, which is extremely hard to convey through text... Although, I'm not going to lie... I am actually a bitch in real life, too. So maybe he is as well. 😉

Either way... NYU... Not cute with that horrifying email.

Anyone know how soon we'll find out about decisions? My interview day was told we'd find out around Nov/Dec but idk if they've updated that time frame.

Anyone?

I was told early November.

I was told early November.

Ooooh. Are you sure? Because I would be pretty excited about that.... I was at their second interview so I'd hear back pretty early...

I interviewed last week 10/8 and was told between mid-November and absolutely before mid-February. They said it's not entirely rolling in that your whole interview cohort won't find out at the same time. It can be weeks apart. So don't go off when you interviewed. The waiting game begins -_-

Does anyone know how NYU Med Adcoms evaluate applicants post-interview? Are all applicants numerically ranked, and is this ranking the basis of the admissions decision? Or do numbers (MCAT, GPA) still play a role? Or do extracurriculars still play a role?

As a general rule, everything plays a role. I doubt there are people here who have a specific answer to this question with respect to NYU, unless they're an MS4 on the committee.

I did not apply here but spent a few days in their graduate housing with a group of medical students last week. Seemed like a really fun and welcoming group of students that were all very happy to be there. Obviously they weren't trying to sell the school to me so I would take that as a good sign!

Can anyone (ideally a current student) speak to how NYU looks at older, non-traditional applicants? I read on a few forums that NYU only likes young, traditional applicants. Am wondering if anyone has any personal experience with this and/or can talk about the composition of the class the last few years.

Having just recently interviewed, I can only speak from another applicant's perspective. But from what I've seen, NYU is extremely diverse in its student population. We spoke with many students who took several years off to pursue other life goals, completed post-bacs, lived in other countries after graduating and they eventually ended up at NYU. So, I think NYU is very open to non-traditional students as they are devoted to student diversity.

I so nervous.

NYU has become my top choice after reading all about the program, reeeeeally don't wanna mess this up.

Good luck to all!

Hey all,

I am a current medical student at NYU. I got a lot out of this website when I was freaking about admissions, and I am keen to help others. Please feel free to message me (it's best to message me as opposed to posting here because I don't read this forum regularly). I'll be glad to help in any way I can.

Good luck to everyone.

I don't know the exact numbers, but based on what I can gather from my own class, a fair proportion are non-trad (including myself). I agree; quite a diverse class.

20% nontrad is what I was told on interview day

I liked the Webinar though.
I'm sure it was good, I just don't appreciate the mini-heart attack that happens as a result of waiting for an II or a rejection, and seeing an email from NYU that starts with "We would like to invite you to...".

I am sure someone on the admissions committee enjoys it very much

Anyone have any insight into when we will start to hear about admissions decisions? They were supremely vague at my interview.

If I didn't get the diversity webinar email, do you think that means I've been silently rejected? I got the one about the twitter Q and A a few weeks ago but not this one and I can't figure out why.
