2015-2016 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have any insight into when we will start to hear about admissions decisions? They were supremely vague at my interview.

I was accepted on October 23 (interviewed end of September). I thought it was a mistake at first because they said we wouldn't hear anything until December. I made an account just to post this to see if anyone else has heard anything? I thought it was odd that no one posted anything....

Congratulations! I interviewed mid-to-late October and they said we could hear any time between then and January, which wouldn't rule that out. Weird that they seem to have accepted so few people though!

Thanks! I'm still shocked! Hopefully you'll hear some good news soon 🙂

I interviewed around the same time. From previous threads it seemed like those who interviewed before mid-October received word right around now. I'm anticipating hearing back (accept/reject/deferred decision) in mid-December based on past years.

Also accepted on October 23rd, also interviewed the end of September and thought it was a mistake! Have totally forgotten to check in here but I was shocked it came out so early too. Casually called the office to see if my deposit went through just to make sure...

Okay, awesome! So I guess it wasn't a mistake 🙂

How were you notified? Email?

Are there ever updates on the portal but not by email?

I got an e-mail that day and my portal was updated. The next week I got a letter in the mail.

lol wow they didn't even post on twitter they had sent out acceptances.

II today excited!! LM 77, submitted secondary 9/23, so I'm impressed with their efficiency!

If I didn't get the diversity webinar email, do you think that means I've been silently rejected? I got the one about the twitter Q and A a few weeks ago but not this one and I can't figure out why.

I didn't get the webinar email either but got the twitter Q&A one. Keep your head up, med school admissions is really unpredictable

Unpredictable =/= Efficient
Sorry, I'm just butthurt. I submitted mine almost a month before you and haven't heard anything.

Naw I feel you. That's why I think it's better to not put too much stock into what people are saying on forums and stick to gleaning the information you need/constructive discussion. Cause you really don't know what's going on behind the scenes and evidence shows it is super unpredictable. And it is still 1st week of November

I interviewed mid-Sep. I don't actually have it either, but I remember a couple of people saying a few weeks ago I think that it said "Waitlisted" on their portal.

I also don't have it I don't think... where on the portal is this supposed to be? Interviewed in Sept. also

I received the diversity email, but I could see them just inviting people based on their response on the race/ethnicity portion of their AMCAS application. They could be just sending out that email to POC!
It's just the neuroticism getting to people. I received none of the emails anyone has ever talked about until this recent e-mail. I guess that means that I was rejected before but am no longer rejected because I got an e-mail unrelated to the admissions process, huh? Ugh... these pre-meds. <3

Any body else starting to get nervous? They send out mass acceptances around this time next week. But who knows lol..

Also interviewed in mid-September, haven't heard anything yet!!

Hey everyone, silly question, but a friend of mine just mentioned that uploading a thank you note was essentially required here post interview, I haven't done so yet... I didn't feel it was necessary given the MMI format... anyone else?

I did not send one for the reason that you mentioned. I hope this is not the case.

A thank you note is a nice gesture. One of the Dean's from Albert Einstein CoM said that it most likely won't hurt you if you don't, but that there was a time where the decision was between two candidates and only one sent the thank you note, and they chose that one over the one who did not send one. I just said thank you for the opportunity to see Langone and Bellevue and stuff and how I hoped the MMI showed them a little bit about me

Where did your friend hear that a thank you note was "essentially required"? I didn't send one after my interview either. On the interview day, the admissions person made it sound not totally necessary -- she said, "you had many interviewers so it'll be hard to address to thank you notes, but if you would like to send one, you can upload a general one to everyone."

Dear NYU,
It is cruel of you to send an email that begins
"mehc,

I would like to invite you to..."

...to applicants who have not yet received an II, especially when it's just to a twitter chat and your subject line was too long to display properly on mobile devices (thus the first lines being what are read first).

Sincerely,
mehc012

UMich has sent me like four of these... it's driving me crazy.

Also @LuciusVorenus how did cost of living in NY factor into your decision? Is it really as extreme as it seemed when I was in NYC? I've heard stories of med students going to NYU/Columbia who got out and realized they had the same shot at decent residencies, but twice the student debt due to the costs of living in Manhattan and attending these prestigious schools. I asked this of tour guides at both schools, but my NYU tour guide only got into NYU and my Columbia tour guide said Columbia was her top choice and price did not factor into her decision at all.

Just wanted to give a heads-up that some folks might be getting acceptance letters on Monday. I found one in my mailbox yesterday, but it was dated November 9th. Looks like it got delivered to me just in time to beat the weekend!

I didn't write a note, so I guess I'm your answer.

They didn't send an email about the acceptance? Was it just the letter?

Congratulations! It's possible that MD/PhD decisions go out on a different timeline than MD decisions, but this timing seems consistent with what happened last year.

I definitely interviewed way too recently to hear back, but yeah the good ol' heart rate is up there right now for no reason.

The Twitter notification is nice, but really is just ensuring I get nothing done at work
Haha. I know, right? It's unclear whether emails have already gone out or will go out soon... Neurotroph got an email, but is also an md/PhD applicant, so things could be different for md applicants (at least I hope this is the case).

I doubt emails have gone out...I'm expecting a huge influx of "ACCEPTED!" posts once it happens...

Historically we're looking at 4 PM, I assume we'd have heard from one of them superstar applicants on here if they'd been out for a bit now!
