2015-2016 Ohio State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Very late. I didn't even get the generic email, I got a specific email from the secretary because I interviewed in the last week or two of the season. I interviewed on March 23, and got my invite about a week before that.
thanks for the info! Its so hard to not worry about getting an interview! I think I am just a little impatient! 🙂

FWIW, I had the the ' -> ? issue, and received an II yesterday. So I don't think it's anything to worry about (I think at least)

Definitely had the same issue with the apostrophes becoming quotation marks. Also, I definitely misread the demographics information for "father's parents" and "mother's parents" as "father" and "mother." ALSO, the application also kept closing on me without saving even though I pressed "save" multiple times. OOPS. Hope they don't mind too much 🙁

Woah I didn't notice that either. They should really make it more clear, I never expected a question like that.

I just looked through my app and didn't see anything asking about parents/grandparents. Where was it?

Just found it under Demographic Information.

"Please check the highest education level completed by your:
Father's Parents
Mother's Parents"

I definitely answered assuming "father" and "mother" as well. That question doesn't make any sense; what if your father's father had a different level of education than your father's mother?

Weird. I don't see that in my submitted app. Oh well.

Those questions tend to be entirely for survey purposes, so even if you put the wrong info, it shouldn't be a big deal!

Whaaaat if you're a reapplicant and read it right the first time but definitely read it wrong the next time? Do they ever look at both? (Difference in education levels between parents and grandparents is pretty drastic).

Maybe your grandparents got a college degree over the past year!

If they ask, then tell them the truth, you made a silly mistake. I know at Wright State they ask similar questions and even say the questions are for survey purposes only and have no influence on whether you get in. Relax!

submitted my secondary on 7/12, still no word :meh:... Do they let you know if you won't get an interview?

Also recieved II this morning! Interview date is towards the end of September. I believe I was complete July 18th, although I'm not positive on that one. Stats are MCAT: 515-520, gpa: 3.80-4.00. Hopefully there are lots more going around!

anyone still have the status application received and secondary received? submitted all the way back in early july

Anyone know if OSUCOM treats reapplicants differently? I know some schools (e.g. Mayo) put them in a different pile or the Dean of Admissions goes through them him/herself... Hoping and praying for some Buckeye love but wondering if being a reapplicant will make my review process longer/different?

Anyone else not prompted to pay the application fee when they submitted? I was directed to Ohio State's main university website after submitting my application. I never paid the application fee and can't seem to find where you pay it.

Hey guys! Current out of state M1 here and loving it! If you have any questions about the school, or the application process let me know!
GO BUCKS!

Hi Cory, I did have a couple questions:

1) how many people choose the independent pathway vs. the integrated one?

2) how does the independent pathway work? what resources do students use?

3) does anyone do research during the school year?

4) are exams based of powerpoints/slides/syllabus notes....or are questions often from what professors say verbally?

Please let me know. Thanks!

Hey SandP, great questions. I'll take them one by one.

1, 2) So OSU has recently revamped their curriculum, and no longer does the independent pathway and integrated pathway. The new curriculum is called Lead, Serve, Inspire. It is really awesome, in that it gives you the flexibility of the independent pathway (almost all lectures have optional attendance and are recorded, many lessons are taught at your pace via e-modules, and you have assignments based on at home readings) and the benefit of the integrated pathway as well. In the LSI curriculum, you start practicing clinical skills such as patient interviews and exams from the very beginning. You also are paired with a physician and work in the clinic with them starting in October of your first year. Also importantly, we have joined the growing number of schools adopting a pass/fail system the first two years, which helps take some of the stress away.

3) Most students who do research do it during the summer between M1 and M2, but doing it during the year is certainly possible. I plan on doing this starting around October. There is tons of research in the medical center, and they have conferences where research mentors who need students in their labs come and present some of the research opportunities available. I would wait until you get used to the workload before deciding to get involved in research during the school year though.

4) Our first block exam is in a couple of weeks, so I can't speak as confidently about their content, but we have had weekly quizzes. The quizzes are principally from material actually written on the slides (all of which you have access to), although a few random questions have come from something the professor only said verbally, but was still an important point. If you decide to stream lecture, you have access to the powerpoint and recorded presentation, so that would not be an issue for you.

Has anyone interviewed here yet/stayed with a student host? If so, when did you hear about your hosting arrangements?

Also, on a semi-related note, I'm interviewing in a week (on 9/14) and reserved a room at the Varsity Inn South, super close to the med school. If anyone else is interviewing the same time, and if I don't end up stay with a student host, let me know if you'd want to split a room. The room comes with 2 double beds and it'd be nice to save a few bucks!

Did anyone else get a status update after their interview invitation? I can't figure out what has changed in my portal...

I did. I called them and they told me there was nothing to worry about it. The person that I spoke could not figure out why I got it, but she said everything looked fine on my app.

Invited for interview 1st week of October. Hope my app will be considered in the first round of acceptances around October 16! Go Bucks! Go tOSU!

OMG PERFECT ANSWER
your avatar is everything. Honestly I'm just sitting here on this thread, on this page, simultaneously watching a baby goat wear sunglasses and Braxton seemingly defy the laws of physics over and over, on loop. This is what the internet and gifs were intended for.

Hi Cory

Thanks for your responses! That was very helpful.

Some more questions:

1) osu has systems based learning correct? (i.e. you learn physiology, histology, anatomy of each body system?)

2) I know it's pass/fail, but is there internal ranking? I heard ranking was used to give scholarship...?

3) are exams computer or paper based?

4) what do YOU love about osu med??

Thanks!!!!

1) Yeah we are systems based, which is nice, as everything you are learning, the cell biology, histology, pathology, and physiology all ties together in each block. OSU is unique in that even the anatomy is systems based. Most schools I've seen have you take anatomy the first few months and then you have to recall it later to apply it to physiology of each organ system. At OSU, you learn anatomy over 2 years, and you learn each system's anatomy while you are learning its cell biology, histology, etc, which is awesome.

2) So it's typically above 70% is pass, and yeah there is an internal ranking that can give you merit-based scholarships depending which percentile for the class you are in. If I remember right top 25% and up gets scholarships, and the higher your rank, the more you get. Also, if you are top 25% you have "honors" which shows up on your transcript and top 10% is "high honors." Most pass fail places I interviewed at had this internal ranking still.

3) Exams are taken on your tablet.

4) There's a lot to like here, as you will see when you interview. There were a lot of research opportunities here, which was important to me. They just opened an awesome new cancer hospital (The James), which I liked as I am thinking about oncology. The med campus is large and has a lot going on. It has tons of specialty hospitals, the med school, the optometry school, and the dental school. You can rotate and do research in every field. The undergrad campus we are attached to is cool too. I believe it is the largest in the country. The campus has four different gyms you can go to, a climbing center, and restaurants and stuff.

I also really liked the course setup. We have lecture in the morning, then online lectures/modules, anatomy labs, and other group activities in the afternoons sometimes. All lectures except the patient panels are recorded, and lecture attendance is usually optional, which gives you a lot of flexibility. Material has been presented in a very sensible way, as all the lectures and concepts tie together, and really focus on the clinical manifestation of the basic science you learn. More than anything though, I liked the people here. Your class is big, ~200 students, so you are always meeting new people. OSU seems to really attract a certain kind of student that is serious about their studying, but also likes to have fun. A lot of us have gone out most weekends to get a break, and even sometimes during the week if we get enough done during the day. Also a huge group of us got season tickets together for the football games, so that will be a ton of fun. There's nothing in the world like OSU football. Finally, it was extremely affordable for me. You can get in state tuition after a year here, which a lot of places don't let you do, and even the out of state was reasonable. Cost of living isn't too bad, you can live very close to campus pretty cheap if you don't mind having room mates.

Hope this was helpful! I have honestly loved school here so far.

@jojahtechpremed Saw you were interviewing today, hope it went well!! I'm interviewing Wednesday so I'm curious...what was your general feel of the school? Likes and dislikes?? What was the personality of the admissions staff / did the day seem chill and relaxed or a little more exacting in terms of how stressful interviews were etc.
Please feel free to send me a personal message if you don't want to publish your thoughts!

I'd also like to hear about people's interview experiences this week! I'm interviewing next week--EEK!

🙂

Haha no worries, I'd be happy to share so others can take a look as well!

This was my first interview of the season so I was naturally a little on edge but it was actually a very pleasant experience! Everyone you interact with (admissions office, faculty, medical students, etc) is very friendly and they really make an effort to make you feel welcome. Dean Capers probably spent around 2 hours with us during the first part of the day which really impressed me, I don't know how many admissions deans would spend the time to talk about their program and greet each interviewing student. The next chunk of the day was lunch and tours with current medical students so that was a nice chance to see the campus (OSU is HUGE but all of the med facilities are pretty close together). Interviews were the last part of the day and they really try to make them low stress. They emphasized several times how they just want to get to know you as a person; they see your personal statement and activities but not your stats and it's an opportunity for you to talk about things that were meaningful to you and to expand upon things in your application.

Overall, I really liked how supportive everyone was; one of the things pretty much all of the current students mentioned was how they all work together and how collaborative it is; people don't compete with one another. The administration and faculty seem very committed to teaching and it really did feel like a community. Since this is my first visit I don't know if most schools are like that but I was pretty impressed. I guess I'll REALLY find out how it went on October 15th!

Good luck to those of you still waiting to hear back and those with interviews coming up!
