2015-2016 Oregon Health & Sciences University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've just kind of got a unique situation (don't we all?). I'm a veteran with 7 years of service and a small family to take care of, so I think the military medical school (USUHS) is probably my best bet. I love Oregon and know it is a great place to live, but I'm also excited at the prospect of hitting the road again and seeing more new places. I'd probably still try and go here, but I just think the amount of debt I would amass from living in expensive Portland, likely with no scholarships/grants since OHSU doesn't give many out, would be too much. On top of that OHSU is mostly geared towards producing primary care physicians. Nothing wrong with that, and I very well may go into primary care, but massive debt and the lower pay of primary care is a tough combo.

A lot of this decision is timing too. If I had gotten an interview here earlier and, by some amazing stroke of fortune, accepted, then the financial aid office would have had time to process my information and make me an offer before the deadline to only hold a place at one school. Really doubt that's going to happen now, and I'm feeling the need to start making some definite plans with summer drawing closer.

Not trying to put the school down or anything. It truly is a great school, but I'll probably be better off elsewhere. Best of luck to all of you with the rest of the cycle.

Is HPSP a hard "no" for you?

Yeah, I've done a bit of math and it just doesn't really make sense to do that level of commitment. At this point I should either stay out completely or commit until retirement. If I do the latter then USUHS is a far better deal than HPSP.

Fair enough. GL getting into USUHS. I really wish I did this cycle but oh well.

March 1st it is!
So (possibly) bad news. I just got off the phone and apparently they may be as late as Friday of next week (3/4) with portal updates. Something something record application year.

Also, bonus takeaway from the phone call: don't be non-mission-based. They have enough mission-based apps to completely fill up and then some I guess.

I know this has probably been talked about a lot, but I have a question about the new curriculum. I know it's called "your md" and it's supposed to be awesome... But that's about all I can learn about it on OHSU's website. Can anyone give me a description of what it's actually like or direct me to where I can find that information? thanks a million!

Just a heads up to anyone with a March interview date, the OSAC scholarship is due tomorrow (March 1st). You can apply at app.oregonstudentaid.gov

I just found out about this myself, and am going to apply today. Apparently a lot of the OHSU scholarships are either invite only, or the deadline has already passed. Hopefully this one isn't too bad though.

Interviewed: 01/08
Portal Update ("On Hold"): 02/17
Accepted: 02/24

Got an email but couldn't quite believe it because I didn't expect to hear anything from them until April 30th. Immediately checked the portal and it was true!

Good luck to everyone!!!

Rejected Pre-II just now. Good luck to everyone who is still under consideration!

How do you know if you are on a post-interview hold? Does the portal reflect that message or is your last purple box simply the "Your MD interview has been scheduled for..."? Sorry if I am just being obtuse or unaware, but I wanted to double check

People who have recently received II or Pre-II Rejection, were you on Pre-interview hold? I've been on hold for a while, and have yet to receive an invite or a rejection...

No worries! It will actually say "Hold" with a little generic explanation underneath about how many applicants they interview through the season blah blah. They are probably still deciding on your app 🙂 Sometimes if the committee member who interviewed you can't make the meeting then your decision takes longer. Best of luck!

Congrats to all who recently got in! I'm prepared for the pre II rejection at this point... On the plus side soon I can stop checking the portal so often 🙂. for improving ones application for the next round, does anyone have experience with who to speak at ohsu about this? Or reapplicats what did you do the second time around?

Still best of luck to everyone still waiting, we should know by Friday.

Portal update today, saying they are reviewing up until mid March. Positive side is that they are taking care in reviewing each applicant.

Best of luck, let us hope they still have interviews in March available.

I called and they said that they added one more interview date, April 1st. So, now we get to wait another two weeks to see if we'll get interviews! Fingers crossed!

Anyone get any updates aside from the "Mid March" portal update?

Nope, only changes I've seen on there since July of last year is the late feb and then mid march updates 😕

Are you non mission based?

I applied MD/MPH which I think fits with mission based groups, but I'm not entirely sure as I called sometime in late 2015 and the person I spoke to said I was not considered mission based. Gonna go with a no I guess.

It's supposed to be mission based. Hmmm, maybe you should call MD admissions and ask for Lori to evaluate your mission based eligibility.

II early this AM. IS. Quite a surprise since I was put on pre-interview hold in February. Good luck everyone.
Congrats! I'm still hoping for mine! If you don't mind me asking, are you in-state? Mission based? And when were you marked complete?

Just gave them a call, confirmed I am considered mission based. Guess it was just some miscommunication when I called before. Although strange that I am still being screened so late in the cycle despite being mission based, fingers crossed though

Thank you. I am in-state, so I guess that will put me in the mission-based group. I was marked complete on 09/28. Good luck to you.

Sorry for the radio silence! Didn't see the chatter. I live in NE (long commute of about an hour and I can make it work. Housing is hard but yes the transit options help. Cars are the worst, traffic sucks so just don't!

The new curriculum has ups and downs, I love the organization in systems and the emphasis on integrating patient centered care into our education. You will have lots of class time. They are still learning how to be flexible but they are trying to do better.

I encourage you to try and be patient, they spend a ton of time looking over every detail to form a great class, and they always take longer than the estimated time. I was a 3rd time reapplicant who interviewed the 2nd to last interview day and was accepted out of post interview limbo the last day before the waitlist came out. Patience is a virtue at this program. I couldn't love my class more though. They are diverse in experience, perspective, communication style, interests and motivations. I can see the future doctor in each of them and respect that our disagreements and differences make me stronger. Sometimes I think the admin hate themselves just a little for bringing in so many disparate and passionate opinions, all driving for change. We will create a better OHSU though. It is still learning to accept the change, but many are pushing forward even though it is uncomfortable. Keep evaluating your needs though. Find what is right for you. PM me if you want a quicker response since I forget some threads in my med school crazy brain. Off to learn about cardio!

Thanks for the info, I was marked complete 12/24, so I guess it's just a waiting game now. What dates did they give you for interview? I'm wondering if they still have space.

They offered me 3/9, 3/11, 3/30 and 4/1. I think 4/1 is the last interview date.

Anyone interviewing on 3/11? I will be on the lunch panel! Celebrating my interview date 1 year ago! Looking forward to seeing you there.

Do we get notified of decision at one time period? Or is it random? I interviewed Feb 26 just curious?

II this morning by phone! MD only interview, MD/MPH applicant. Hopefully all of you will hear the same soon 🙂
Huh, by phone? That's pretty cool; I just assumed everything was via portal.

Out of curiosity, what were your stats/completion date?
