2015-2016 Oregon Health & Sciences University Application Thread

There are lots of spots that are not decided until the interviews are done! @Summertime012 is totally right about the lab and about anatomy. And @URHere is mostly correct, SW Clinic is a joint operation between OHSU and other local medical professionals. It is an amazing opportunity and I have learned a ton. We also have many other opportunities to be in clinic, to build skills, to work with patients (especially the underserved) and lots of focus on building your identity as a physician through those activities. OHSU values non didactic activities as long as you get the passing grades!

It's mid-March, and I'm still on pre-II hold. Has anyone heard anything this past week? Really hoping for that II!

I think I remember the dean of admissions saying that their last week of interviews was the end of March.

Does anyone know if OHSU gives feedback for applicants who did not receive an interview?

They have two interview days left: 3/31 and 4/01. They added April 1st this year because of a record number of applicants.

Also, when did you all receive your emails/portal updates?

About 6 weeks post interview. No email, just on the portal. (Hold)

Just speculation - my interview day they said they accept 10% hold 80% reject 10% so, based on the 530 they say they interview, that would be roughly 53 spots offered by April...

I've talked to lots of current students, and literally every one of them was on hold until sometime between March-June. So, I think there must be lots of movement throughout the spring.

Having gone through this process before I don't think that is the case.
I believe that when they say they accept 10% that is of each interview group. I think they told us that last year.
For each interview group they accept a couple, reject a couple, and everyone else is on hold.
So by the time April 30 rolls around they have sent out enough acceptance for almost the whole class. But people with multiple acceptances will decline their acceptance so they accept more people and then put togther the waitlist.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty confident that is how it is done.

I think you're right Leahj. They have to offer out enough acceptances to fill the class by April 30th, so they will give out a lot more in the next few weeks. Then make their waitlist after people decline. Good luck to you 🙂

I only meant that they must accept 10% (~53) before April 1st then in April they must admit a full class size no later than April 30th - most likely they give acceptances starting the beginning of April and rolling through the end. At least, this is my general understanding of it from the students I've spoken with (I could be totally wrong haha). Good luck to everyone! The magic month of April is almost here and then we will know for sure haha.

I asked this question during my interview day and it was made clear that enough acceptances are handed out to fill the class by April 30th. I agree with LeahJ's understanding, as that was pretty much exactly how it was explained to me when I interviewed in Feb. 10%/80%/10% for each interview group (roughly) - class "filled" by the end of April - as acceptances are declined, spaces are filled using the ranked waitlist they release on the 30th. It was mentioned however, that the score threshold for outright acceptance post-interview is not necessarily rigid and can fluctuate throughout the interview cycle based on how well the class is coming together. I believe this is how people on "hold" are sometimes moved to "accept" before April 30th. They likely re-evaluate the "hold" pool whenever they adjust that outright acceptance threshold (though this is my own speculation...). She made it sound like the threshold would only be adjusted slightly once or twice during a cycle to keep things fair for all who interview but I thought it was an interesting piece of info. Again - good luck to all who are waiting! Hope to be classmates with you guys this fall.

I know OHSU pays particular attention to the composition of the class which created a diverse class with a huge variety of experiences for Med19 (and Med18 from what I can see). They do accept more heavily after interviews are done traditionally but either way you will all know soon. GL to everyone waiting, I was there (three times) and it can be agonizing so stay busy.

When did you interview?

Has anyone gotten an email about the second look days? Or any more upcoming dates? I saw that there was one earlier this month but that's the last I've heard of them.

There are 2nd look days on 4/22, 5/6, and 5/20. If/when you get accepted you will learn more details on how to sign up. We have an incredibly collaborative group and are excited to mentor/support the incoming class, so you will have lots of opportunities to learn more about starting med school here if you want. 🙂

Does anyone have the link to the Facebook group
I hear you have to be invited by the admin of the group and I don't think that happens until after you submit your acceptance contract etc. I just returned my forms and haven't yet received the group invite..

What does it say if you're on hold in your portal?
I think if you interviewed recently it would just say the info about your interview/post interview survey 🙂 When you are on hold there's a "Decision: Hold" in bold.

I've been lurking in this thread and thought I'd establish myself. Interviewed 3/16, IS, 3.88, 504. Haven't heard anything back yet.

I also interviewed 3/16! Haven't heard anything either.

Good luck sweb. It's only been 3 weeks so I'm trying to be patient. Looks like we'll know by the end of the month.

Thanks! Fingers crossed but trying to stay positive no matter what. And good luck to you as well.

hey guys just wondering if anyone knows what the chances of getting rejected are post hold? Does it usually mean accept or waitlist or is there an equal chance of getting denied. Thanks and hope this month brings good news to everyone at one place or another!!

No looks like I wasn't, it never had a decision before today it just kept saying my interview date and such and to wait for decision.
This was my experience as well. Interviewed the same date as Pyruvate2020. Just one day it said "Accepted" and then I got the official email later that day.

FWIW, I got a note about Second Look Days today. The dates are 4/22, 5/6, and 5/20.

Congrats IPdoc. Mind sharing the dates you were interviewed and accepted?

No problem. I posted earlier about it, but those things tend to get buried.

Interviewed 2/26. Accepted 3/21.

People get rejected. I was rejected after being placed on hold the first year I applied along with several other people I knew. Getting a hold does not guarantee a waitlist position.

Any MD/MPH applicants out there that have heard a decision or been placed on post-interview hold? I interviewed 3/9 and I haven't heard anything yet, just wondering where they are in the MD/MPH pack!

Yep same interviewed 3/16, and anxiously waiting!!
I have to say I was really disappointed with my interviewer this year, they were very disengaged and didn't ask any questions that showed they had read my application. Just bland questions, like what's your worst mistake..... I have had two other interviews ( at OHSU last year and at a different school this year) in both of those I was asked questions about my application essays specifically.
So this year at OHSU I was really surprised and disappointed with the one on one interview. Maybe I am over thinking it. But it felt like I had to work really hard to make the interviewer smile or be engaged in conversation.
:-(

Really? Than sounds rough! I'm so sorry! My one on one interview felt incredible and it was some of the other scenarios that looking back, I question if I made the right choices. When I start going down that road I think, "Syd, you don't play those games"
