2015-2016 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Thanks! Much appreciated.

One of my questions was about the experience of living in Geneva tower, and whether or not students opt to live elsewhere? I also didn't get to find out if the school streamed the class-time lectures (essentially, how mandatory attendance is). If anyone could clarify those, that would be stellar.

So I still haven't received an acceptance email or acceptance packet. What's the next step after acceptance?

Did you get an email acknowledging receipt of the acceptance reply form/deposit and informing you about your New Upstate ID? Maybe you should call. How far do you live?

Yea I got those. It'll probably be a good idea to call. What did the acceptance packet contain? Anything super important?

Just the official acceptance letter and info about health clearance forms, transcripts, orientation materials, etc. and things needed to be prepared/obtained prior to matriculation.

Students live all over. The older, non-traditional students tend to live further from campus (either with their families or significant others), while the younger students tend to live at either Geneva, one of the nearby apartments (Jefferson/Madison), or downtown. I live in Geneva - it's great for convenience and because a lot of other students live there (meeting people etc.), but it's a tad dorm-y for my tastes. I'll move to one of the other apartments next year most likely.

Lectures are all available online for download within ~1-2 hours of the lecture ending. The only mandatory classes we have are practice of medicine small group (with standardized patients) and some lab small groups when we have to talk about cases. Other classes are optional.

We have a big test coming up but feel free to PM me with any other questions and I'll get back to you whenever.

Thanks so much for your help!
You guys have all been great 🙂

Class of 2019 guy here: some of our classmates just made a group, that became the official one. School doesn't make one (afaik)

I'll answer any questions that anyone has, PM or in here.

Anyone know what date they are at for the interview process? What is the latest people have heard back from?

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but at my interview day the dean of admissions said we should hope to hear in three to five weeks max because there were going to be extra committee meetings to catch up on the delay. Hopefully that means lots of great news for all of us waiting!

When did you interview

Sorry if this has already been answered (on my phone so it's hard to search)- what do you mean by "portal cleared"?
Interviewed 11/16, haven't heard back yet.

So in the portal after your interview, it'll say stuff about your interview for a while after it. Like the links to upload your pic and fall grades and class list and stuff. Eventually, it will literally just disappear.

One more question for you (or anyone else who can answer), would you mind telling us about the curriculum? I don't think I got to ask the right questions on my interview day, as it was one of my first interviews. Are the exams Board-exam styled or just styled uniquely to Upstate's curriculum? Do they incorporate a lot of Step 1 study time? Thanks!

For those who were rejected after being on pre-interview hold, how did you find out? Did they email you? I can't seem to check my status on the portal, so I was wondering....

Accepted!!! Interviewed on 10/28 and notified of acceptance via portal on 12/17 (sorry for the late post). Beyond excited!! :soexcited:

Portal cleared today 12/28. Interviewed 11/4. I'm so scared, how long from being cleared to posting a decision?

Quick question - How do we select our clinical campus preference? I've got my interview on 1/13! Thanks 🙂

You select it on the portal. You have 2 weeks after your interview date to make your selection. On my interview day, they recommended emailing students at both campuses to gather their thoughts which was super helpful! Good luck on your interview!

Ah, so we make our decision after the interview. That makes so much more sense lol. Thanks kmc, I appreciate it!

They'll explain further at the interview.. But basically you can say: Syracuse only, Binghamton only, or preferred one or the other.. If you go the "only" route, you won't even be contacted if a spot is open in the other campus.

Cool! That's good to know. Thanks for the clarification to both of you!

Anyone know when we should apply for on campus housing?

I'm wondering the same thing.. I won't be in the states this summer so hopefully soon

I remember reading somewhere that M1 students I think must live in Geneva (or like 99% of them do anyway).. So applying now or August 1st might not be such a huge difference except for roommate.

Not necessarily true. A good portion of the class lives in Madison or Jefferson Towers, or off campus. Not sure of the exact numbers, but at least 30+ live "off campus"

Oh then disregard that lol. Whoops.
