2015-2016 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ahhhh errrmagerrddd I can't wait! Thank you for the update(s) @Enelysion! It's good to know that there is some movement! Hopefully I'm not too far behind you on the list!

Great to see wait list moving for the Navy! Really excited and congratulations Enelysion. I was talking to my recruiter the other day for the HPSP and they said GMO is not as common if you go to civilian school but is still very common in more competitive specialties. He did however say GMO is almost guaranteed for anything outside of family and internal medicine at USUHS. When I interviewed and USUHS the student panel agreed GMO is essentially required for Navy. Can anyone confirm this. I have no idea what I want to specialize in but thought I would try and better understand given this might be a huge commitment. Thanks!

GMO is still pretty common whether or not one goes to a civilian school or USUHS. At this point, in general, it's still a coin flip whether one has to go on a GMO tour or not. Two types of graduates can train straight through though, those that graduate with AOA honors and family medicine (maybe pediatrics...though don't quote me on peds). My friend is a current PGY1 Internal Medicine resident and 2/3 of the class (including him) were sent on a GMO tour this year. He's being shipped to San Diego for two years ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It must suck soooo much to have to live in a city where temperatures don't go below 50 degrees during the depths of winter, no snow, reasonable traffic, tacos, burritos, carne asada fries, beaches, surfing, paddle boarding, food trucks, hiking, and you get to do this while wearing shorts and sandals all year long!!! When winter storm Jonas hit a few weeks back and as I was trapped inside my apartment for 3 days staring at my books or outside my window at the haze of white...I sometimes wonder why they couldn't have opened up USUHS in Balboa. Or Honolulu.

Where was I...

If anyone else has questions about GMOs, just ask, or PM me. I'll do my best to clarify on this board and if anyone else has a better idea of this let me know! The recruiters unfortunately do not stay long enough in their billets to have a true understanding of Navy GME and GMO.

EDIT: It's finals week. Hence my bitterness about not being in San Diego right now...

Thanks for the response! That makes a lot more sense. I also had one more question if you could be of assistance. I have some interest in orthopaedics, do you generally known how many people apply each year for this? I know they only have 11 spots and GMO is essentially required to make you competitive but is this generally self selective or pretty competitive? Thanks, any input would be greatly appreciated.

The match for Orthopedics in each service tends to have between 20-30 MS4 applicants each year. I don't know about GMO or TY.
From USUHS,
NAVY matched 3/4 who interviewed for Ortho
ARMY 4/5
Air Force all three were selected for deferment so their match is pending.

So people who matched according to this truly go straight through without interruption?

Does anyone know about working with army special forces? I tried looking up for some information on the threads but everything appears very hold. I am not sure if much has changed. Thanks!

Each USSF battalion has a "battalion surgeon", who is rarely an actual surgeon. They are typically family or emergency med. They are usually board certified guys who are looking for a break from the hospital/clinic - senior captains or majors. They do more administration than medicine really. Occasionally, the command will send a doc through the Q Course.

Just got a waitlist letter in the mail! I know I'm probably at the bottom, but I'm still pretty excited I at least have a chance at acceptance now. For anyone wondering, I interviewed October 22nd and was placed on hold early December.

Awesome, I really hope I'm in the same boat. Won't be able to check my mail until I get back from TDY though.

Anyone accepted receive orders yet? Or know when to expect them? I recently got a course reservation verification email for BOLC, so hopefully orders are on the way. Hope to see some movement for the waitlist so I can meet more of you guys this summer!

+1

I was told by the Air Force commissioning program manager assigned to me that we should get orders around 30 days before COT begins, but it could be different for Army.

When does BOLC start?

Hello everyone! I was in the middle of the chaotic process of moving and was not able to login for the longest time! Missed reading about our progress! Well, yeah I also received the mass email and although I knew right away it must have been a mistake I also was a little sad to read the words "conditionally accepted" and know it was not a reality in my life at the moment, hehe. As far as me goes... still in the Alternate Waitlist and still not sure about what the statistics and dynamics of that list look like. I have the feeling it will be a long shot.... a loooong one. So, starting next week Im gonna start preparing for the reapplication process, just in case. I just feel being proactive about the situation will be my best way to cope. After beginning my DoDMERB process back in November, I started the waiver process last week for my final "piece of the puzzle" in terms of the medical qualification and clearance. You know guys... Im ready to do whatever it takes to make this happen and get into USUHS, even if it means that I have to reapply. But, it would be so nice, SO NICE!! to be able to put the admissions process behind me and start the journey into my dreams and goals! But for now, the waiting game will do hehehehe. I continue to wish you all so many great things and al the luck in the world! May April 15th serve us all well!! @Morganism, how have you been!!!!!!!!!!!!?????? How is life in the waiting game? Primary waitlist sounds promising!! Get those pushups on point cause you will be heading out to get commissioned this summer! I can feel it. 🙂

I'm still waiting! I'm really hoping to come off the waitlist when it starts moving and I'm crossing my fingers! I didn't apply HPSP this year because I'd rather come off the USUHS waitlist even in the middle of Summer. If I don't make it, I'll apply HPSP while I'm in civ school next year.

Crossing my fingers for your reapplication! It was great to meet you on interview day and I really hope I get to serve with you someday! But who knows, there might be more waitlist movement than usual this year because people don't want to join with the rocky situation in the middle east  Either way, I wish you the best of luck!

Do you know the dates of COT this year?
June 27 to July 29, then report to USUHS NLT August 1. Good luck, I'm sure the waitlist will start to move soon, especially once April 30 (the multi-acceptance deadline) comes around.

Hi everyone!

I'm a long-time lurker who's just really excited about the possibility of getting accepted into USUHS. I recently got a letter informing me that my file has been updated from a "hold status" to placement on the wait list for a place on the entering class. Needless to say I'm very happy! My first choice is army.

The letter specified how the admissions office cannot discuss places or numbers but I've read a few posts here about people calling and getting an aprox number of other applicants currently on each waitlist. Also, my letter did not specify primary or alternate wait list. Should I call and inquire about these details? Does anyone have any other info about the waitlist?

Thanks so much! It was great to meet you as well. Thanks for all the good vibes. It would indeed be great to serve together one day. Its a small world so... fingers crossed. You know what would be great?! To both start on this upcoming class! Hehe. Keep me updated!! Good luck!!

In my opinion, I think if he has not heard anything yet he should consider a friendly call to the admissions office to inquire about the status of his application. Congrats on his interview!

Unfortunately he just got the news...."the committee has acted unfavorably on your application". I don't understand what would be the reason for the rejection. At the very least he should have made the alternate wait list. Can anyone answer that question for us?

You have to contact the admissions office and ask them. You could post stats, EC's, and interview details, and maybe we could speculate on the reasons, but only admissions knows for sure.

The admissions stated that he interviewed well and had great EC's but said his initial GPA and MCAT scores were weak. (2.8 UG/ 3.9 Post-Bac /500)

Im sorry to hear that. Glad you could find out some of the details of the reasons behind their decision. I think at the end of the day, timing plays a big part. Reapplication "season" is around the corner. If his interview was good, he should workout some of the "kinks" in his application in order to show some improvement and apply as early as he possibly can! Perseverance is powerful! He should not give up, and should work through the process. Good luck and success!

Hey guys! I am new to SDN but ran across this thread and just wanted to say hi! I applied to USUHS this year and have been placed on the primary wait list. Ranked Navy #1 and AF a close #2. Congratulations to those already accepted or wait listed! I hope we all get calls soon : ) Nice to know there is a community of us though in the same boat. Good luck to everyone!

Totally in the same boat! But a good boat to be in if you ask me 🙂 Was Dr. Saguil able to tell you which 3rd of the wait list you were on? Just wondering, because if he was I may drop him an email.
