2015-2016 University of California - Riverside Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not sure if the information is public or confirmed but there is a strong likelihood the class size is increasing this year - but again it's neither confirmed nor denied 😉

Thanks for your reply! Now if I could actually get an interview haha!

Just received the secondary after submitting my primary app more than a month and a half ago.
What does this mean? lol Have people been rejected pre-secondary? Don't know how UCR's application system works and their site doesn't have much information...
This is, BY FAR, the longest secondary I've ever received....

Yeah, the secondary is quite long... I've held onto it for a few weeks, unfortunately. I think I lost the stamina to fill these things out.

Yeah this one was brutal. Had a lot of questions I didn't have written for other schools either.

I also didn't get a secondary from them until like 1-1.5 months after submitting my primary. IS too.

I've lost stamina too. Usually, it takes me 2 days to complete a secondary but this one looks like it might take me about a week (I work full time now, btw) :O
Do you think they actually read the application or just screened based on numbers? How many people have already gotten secondaries/interviews so far? I think they have a 60 student class so they might not interview more than 200 applicants...

I think my application was read before I received a secondary since I received one 1.5 months after I was verified, whereas others that were verified around my time instantly received a secondary.

Remember it's a mission based school. While long, they really do get to know you. Plus only the strong move on 🙂

Do you go to UCR? I'm assuming you do haha. If so, are most people in your class from the IE? My only tie to the IE is extremely tenuous, but I grew up in the Central Valley which is pretty similar in climate/demographics haha.

Yes I'm a MS2. About half the class went to undergrad at UCR. However many of us have ties to different areas. There are quite a few that did not attend UCR and lived in an area outside of it. I myself am not from the area nor did I attend. However my mission and goals were similar to their goals. I did however come from an area similar to the IE. I think Central Valley is very much like IE. But San Fran is not similar to the IE but the motivation and goals of my classmates aligned with the school.

Gotcha. I definitely did not grow up in SF haha. Grew up in a little valley town and my gf is studying optometry in the IE so I'd love to go to UCR. Just curious about a non-IE IS's chances. Thanks for the help though!

I think if your mission aligns with theirs then it should be good to go. Still early in the game - hoping for a good outcome.

LOL JUST NOW received a secondary! Wow they must've been pretty thorough in that review... (just so nobody has to ask me) primary submitted 7/6

I'm a 2014 UCR grad, I applied for 2014-2015 cycle and wasn't admitted or interviewed. But since I recall things coming pretty soon after submitting my primary that cycle I was surprised when August hit and I hadn't received one yet. I thought that was late and maybe I had slipped through the cracks.

Since I submitted day 1 through AMCAS, I was hoping ucr would send a secondary in the first group of schools. On August 7th, I sent them am email asking if I was forgotten, explaining that the school was high on my list, alumnus stuff, etc.

Well, that was on a Friday night and Monday morning I had a secondary invite in my inbox. If this school is important to you (and you can genuinely explain why) try shooting them a brief email or ask if there's an expected time frame for secondaries.

And yes, this school's secondary is difficult, (similar to UCLA or UC Irvine, I can't remember) but I guarantee they read all of it. I graduated with honors, worked multiple jobs on campus, research, honors program, etc. I honestly believed just being an alum with great scores and on-campus activities would get me in the door (especially given the 24 seats thing).

I was wrong.

Make sure you fit their mission statement. I thought my large amount of on-campus activities were a huge plus, but they told me they really want to see people active in their community outside of that.

btw I'm still waiting for II but I'd be glad to help with any other questions about the school, campus, city, etc.

@general987 would you be able to share the average Step 1 score if you know it?

Completely agree with fitting their mission statement. UCR seems to be looking for applicants that fit well above all else.

Dean Schiller has said they read every application, even those that initially fail the screen. I believe I was told they are interviewing close to 300 applicants this cycle. ~100 are given offers and the rest are put on the waitlist.
I know they released that it is above the average in comparison to other medical schools, however I do not know the exact number (although plenty of my friends ahead of me are in the 240s and 250s). It really is what you make of it - for I know there are quite a few in the Caribbean who score 260+. It comes down to curriculum and how the school accommodates with the exam. For us, they give the lectures with Kaplan references so we can use the qbank as practice.

What is the best way to prepare for UCR's MMI day?
It's hard to prepare for a MMI in comparison to one on one interviews, however what I found immensely helpful for when I interviewed was to look up sample MMI scenarios and questions online. You can bet there will be questions about your self such as why you fit the mission and what makes you unique. In addition, prepping on scenarios may help you. During my interview season, I was given a scenario at a school other than UCR that I fatally hit my neighbor's dog and that I had to break the news to him. I also remember speaking about my future plans in the context of what I will do to leave a positive contribution towards medicine. I also had a scenario thrown at me where I had to consult with a patient about changing their habits despite their resistance to it (they want to see how you deal with adversity and broker compromises). Good luck!

Those with interviews and current students:

Do you know how far along the interview process is so far with UCR? Still hoping and wishing for an II, and am getting scared that they're running out of IIs!

Send them an update letter to show you are still around. But you have time on the interviews.

II yesterday! Interview day is 10/31. Should I wear a costume? lol
Ohhh, congrats! Mind telling us when you were complete?
And go in Highlander gear (whatever the hell a highlander is).

I received secondary on 7/10 but did not complete it till 8/1. Man, those secondary questions were killer.
I am a UC alumnus, just not UCR alumnus. Not sure how that's gonna play out 🙂

approx 60 percent of interview spots have been given.

For those who interviewed already, is it true that we will be able to use a notecard to jot down notes at each station?

It seems like there are some delays in applicants hearing back from UCR... I didn't even get an "App Received" confirmation email??? (Submitted 9/23)

Has this generally been everyone's experience?

Congrats! mind posting stats for those with II?
