2015-2016 University of Cincinnati Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called about the speeding tickets, I was hoping to omit some of the ones from <18 years old.
The admin who answered was really laid back about it and simply said "We just do not want any surprises".
I do not think they want *that* much explanation.
I have had 6 speeding tickets😱 sooooo all of you with 1-2 stop worrying.

So I have a question about the moving traffic violation...last summer I received a ticket for disregarding a stop sign, but then in court they changed the violation to it being the equivalent of having a taillight out or something where I wasn't moving (I can't remember the term that was used). Would this count or no?

I would just check yes and explain it. I highly doubt it would be an issue.

What if I don't know how many or what years I received the speeding tickets? Do I really have to stop by the DMV or insurance company for that information?

You could call the UCCOM admissions office and ask. I know how many tickets I have gotten and where/why the incidents happened, but I do not remember all the specific dates and years. My unofficial advice is that as long as you answer to the best of your knowledge it should be ok... I do not think they are on a witch hunt over speeding tickets

Hey, has anyone noticed the discrepancy when you go to click "Review?" When you're filling in the secondary, there's this question:

"If you are NOT currently enrolled in and undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., you are completing a gap year), please click the button below. Then, in 1000 characters, provide a thorough explanation of your current activities and all activities planned between now and your matriculation into medical school (Fall 2016). "

But when you click "Review" and they give you a PDF, your response falls under this question instead:
"If you are NOT currently enrolled in a degree granting program, please briefly describe your major activities not listed on AMCAS"

...those are different questions. also why would you not include something on ACMAS?...

has this happened for anyone else!?

"If you choose to submit three (3) letters, we suggest you request two (2) letters from individuals who can evaluate your performance in science coursework."

Alright, guys, here's my situation: I have 4 letters that I think are all going to be pretty strong. One is from a science prof, one is from a prof in my (non-science) major, and two are from work. How strong is the suggestion of two science letters? I can get one from another science professor in a few weeks (which will obviously delay my application being screened), but I don't think it will be as strong as these other four, which are from people who all know me very well. Thoughts?

You got what you got. Can you change it?? If not, just submit what you have.

for "Imagine a world in which illness and injury do not exist; all medical facilities and schools have closed because there is no longer a need for these services. What would you choose to do with your life in such a world?"

Are they implying some sort of utopia where there is no suffering and everyone is educated and knowledgeable?
Are they asking what you'd want to do with your life besides healthcare and academics?

Also, is the Medical Student Scholars Programs (MSSP) for M1, or do you apply to that program when you apply to the med school?

Yes and Yes. Very weird question, so are we immortal?? Are there vampires in this scenario.? Could not figure out if they wanted to know what our other passions are, or if they are looking for the "service to humanity" commitment. Sort of did both in my essay. No right or wrong answer, well, if you say you want to be a rock star, but then again, you are entertaining the masses. There is no wrong answer. I personally thought it was a stupid question.

Yes about healthcare but I don't believe academics is off limits. Imagine everything is the same as right now except no one gets sick and no one gets hurt. Besides that, it is definitely not a utopia. Same issues as today's society. Just no healthcare problems and no need for any healthcare.

My mind immediately went to a sci fi series where people stopped dying. I guess I could get a career in population growth, since it would be very crowded in this scenario.

Environmental impact, and my contribution to alliviate it was my theme!! IF they are really trying to get what else we are interested in, they could just ask.

Shoot. When they said "all medical facilities and schools have closed", I thought that they meant medical schools, so I talked about how I would go into education or education policy. Did I misunderstand the question or no?

I'm 99.9% sure they are referencing medical schools in that statement. A world with out illness does not mean a world with out education.

This was the subject of mine! Hopefully tons of other people are not also doing this haha

I guess my question is more should I
a) submit the letters that I have now, that do not include a science letter or
b) wait a few weeks when I do get a second science letter that may not be the strongest letter in the world

I have seen on other schools' threads that people have been calling admissions offices and asking how strict the LOR requirements are. A lot of the people on the phone have said that it is not an extremely strict policy but more of a guideline. I would call tomorrow morning and then decide based on the response.

This is one of my last secondaries that I am waiting to receive, are there still people who haven't received a secondary yet?

Woah, finally got a secondary at 5 AM this morning. I guess it was 6 AM Cincinnati time, but still.

I applied here BS/MD and was wait-listed 🙁 It was my top choice back then. Here's to hoping second time's a charm!

Called them before and they don't screen. Just sit tight fellas, its all automated through their IT system and I think it goes by verification date.

Interesting, I was verified sometime in the first week and haven't received one yet.

I was verified last Thursday and received the secondary last Friday. They must have had a glitch, have you given them a call yet?

I was just verified last week so I am trying to be patient, but no secondary yet for me either.

Hmm that is bizarre. To be more specific I was verified June 29 and received secondary July 13 and I applied early decision. You might want to call them and ask, but its up to you.

Also my theory on it being based on verification date is shot, judging from the other posts on here. Nvm lol I really don't know what they're doing.

Ah best of luck! I did undergrad at UC and I didn't even know about the BS/MD program when I was applying. Wish I could go back in time to try my chances, would ease the current application stress a lot! haha

In case anyone else is wondering what the response was, they told me that submitting my application sooner should trump having a second science letter in there. Since I'm planning on getting the letter either way, it'll just enhance the application later on.

Also, is the Medical Student Scholars Programs (MSSP) for M1, or do you apply to that program when you apply to the med school?

They have the application for MSSP for the Class of 2018 on their website and it reads that the deadline is October, 2014. So it is something you apply for once you are already in medical school since the deadline is well into M1.

Does this make you a reapplicant :joyful:

Anybody get interview invites yet? I met with an adcom in June and I remember they told me the first date is august ~24 (if i remember correctly). Still waiting on a final LOR, but curious if they have started inviting yet.

I would leave it as you have it (I did). I'm suspecting this is just an IT miss. The second version of the question that pops up on the PDF is the way UC worded that question last year. The "not listed on AMCAS" portion caused a lot of questions, so it seems they changed the question this year but IT forgot to change the coding to reflect the text change in the PDF. Just a guess, but regardless I think you're fine.

Check again - I believe the discrepancy is fixed (mine is)

As a local to the area, I thought I would keep you guys updated with a pretty big thing that happened on campus. UC police is curently under investigation right now after a fatal shooting of an unarmed black man.

Just thought it would be good for you guys to know. Especially, in an interview invite... it might even come up in the convo and its good to have an idea of such an important thing thats going on on campus 🙂

Yes I saw that somewhere. Any more news about what happened? It made me look up moving to Cincinnati and everything I read was along the lines of "if you aren't white, stay away" which isn't super encouraging. I am white but dealing with racist people every day doesn't sound like fun...

Looks like the cop pulled over this guy for not having a plate, asked Dubose for his license multiple times, Dubose refused and instead handed him an open bottle of alcohol, a struggle ensued, and Dubose tried to flee/run over the cop, and then the cop shot him in the head. Investigation pending- video will be released once a decision is made. Dubose also had 60 priors.

I don't agree with police militarization, but it may have been justified here. Of course, no one deserves to die, but I guess we'll have to wait for the video to see what really happened.

Yes it sounds like the police officer had good reasons to be scared in this situation. It's sad that it's come to this though, black people being scared of the police, and police officers being scared of black people.
Good thing there are videos to clarify what happened.

I contacted admission (nicest people ever) - they said they'd work on it and next time I logged in it was all fixed for me! Meaning, the questions in the PDF were the same as in the text boxes.

Just submitted. That $25 secondary fee is AWESOME.
I submitted last night and got a payment confirmation... But on the application page it still says the payment not recieved. Did that happen to you? I'm gonna call them on monday

Hard to call a dude sitting behind the wheel of a 3 ton killing machine 'unarmed.'
Sucks that someone had to die, but at least there's one less drunk driver on the loose.

I agree, but as of right now theres way too many rumors going around. We're waiting for the cop's camera and dashcam to be released.
