2015-2016 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks, a question a lot of us probably have so I'll ask is about the campus placement. I'm from the suburbs and so obviously would really want to go to the Chicago campus, is it rare to not be placed where you want? Could you explain that process plz 🙂
I should also mention that some shifting occurs if you are accepted to certain programs such as UMED and GMED. Those programs are strictly on the Chicago campus and any students who apply and are accepted into those programs are ultimately moved to the Chicago campus if the have already been placed elsewhere. Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I promise I'll give my best honest answer!

Hey there,

I am interviewing Monday and so im flying in tomorrow morning. If any of the other interviewees are coming in tomorrow and don't know many people in the city (such as myself) PM me and let me know if you'd like to grab lunch/dinner or even watch the games. It would be great to potentially meet future classmates.

Hey, guys!

I'm currently an M1 student here. I was in your shoes last year etc etc.

If you guys have any questions regarding the curriculum (etc.) against other schools (Northwestern, UMich) feel free to message me. Heard the different sides of their stories during interview day.

Thanks!

So I never received an II email, but then today I checked my status on the appstat website and it had been changed to interview scheduling. Does this mean I got an II? Also, will I get an email or is this how they inform applicants of interview offers? Is there a way to schedule the interviews online or do you call them to schedule?

So I just got an II (LizzyM 73, OOS but went to college in IL) but there's nothing to click to schedule the interview on the status page. I called the admissions office, which sent me straight to voicemail, which sent me to a message saying "The user's inbox can't handle any more messages. Goodbye." And then it cut off 🙁

Yea I got the same message the first couple times I tried but eventually got to speak to someone. Was told that there were no open interview slots and advised me to watch the portal closely since new slots will open up. Hope this helps and congrats!

That actually is incredibly helpful, thank you so much!

Oh call the same number to schedule once slots show up on the portal. They don't schedule via portal. Good luck! =)

anyone else have a current status that says Sufficient Recommendations Received?

Most unique interview experience yet: I told my interviewer that I have been drawing for over two decades so they pulled out a blank sheet of paper and pencil and told me to draw them as we continued our conversation LOL. (It wasn't a big deal for me--kind of relaxing actually--but I guess I just want to say be prepared to back up any claims you make during your interview!)
Congrats + good luck to those of you who have upcoming interviews here! Today's experience really made me love UIC even more 🙂

So I received an II via email, but when I checked the portal there was 0 interview spots between all 4 campuses in the state.....so frustrating; anyone know how often spots appear?

Anyone applying early decision? If so have you already interviewed or been invited to interview?

Was looking at the grading system today, and it looks like it's basically a variant of HP/P/F. Can any current students speak to how this affects the atmosphere of the class?

Also, how nice are the facilities? The undergrad campus just has that really depressing, 70s-80s sort of architecture/design which I personally really don't like. Are the facilities at the med school any nicer in terms of technology, natural light, etc.? Loyola's med school, for example, is gorgeous imo if any you have ever been there...

Finally, are all the rotations done at the UIC Medical Center, or do people tend to scatter around a bit?

Yesterday I was talking to a candidate who got a spot because someone dropped out last minute and it seemed like they called multiple times, and every time there were different spots. You can either check the portal frequently to see if any spots open up or you can call the office and check with them (I highly recommend just calling). It seems like a very random process of spots opening up.

There was one ED candidate at yesterday's interview.

Spots are open on the portal right now!! Go check everyone 🙂

How long did people who got II stay in "applicant in process" before changing to interview status? Days? Weeks? Thank you!!

n=1 took me about a month
Thanks. I got all excited because my status changed today BUT looks like I will be waiting... yet again.
My Loyola status also changed today to under review but I'm sure it's the same situation. Congrats on the interview btw!

At least you guys are in process... apparently my app hasn't even entered review yet because I'm still in "progress". I'm wondering if I should call at this point...

Where did you read that? I've read several times that in process means that your application has entered committee review. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

I've heard that it goes from Applicant in progress---->Applicant in process------>AppliCATION in progress or some such thing if you're on hold for rereview, but I might be misremembering things.

Ahh okay...I probably just mixed up the words. Sorry for the confusion everyone! I've clearly been tracking this thread too long smh :bored:

Went from applicant in process back to applicant in progress today...have no clue what that means. Hopefully it's not bad news though.

This has been posted every year. I'll just put it here.

Below is a sort of flow chart for how the admission process works.

********************************
START

I. Submit Primary.

II. Wait for the email from UIC giving you your login information for the Applicant Status Check site (usually arrives within 2 weeks of submitting your primary):https://mercury.comd.uic.edu/appstat

III. Login, and check your status in the second page. [At the bottom of this post I link to a program I made that makes checking your status as easy as double clicking your mouse.]

---

A. "Application Not Complete" = Secondary not yet complete.

B. "Application in Progress" = You are complete. --> Goto C.

C. "Applicant in Process" = Your file is being reviewed, 3 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Select Interview Date" = You are good enough for an interview. --> Goto D.
2. "Application in Process" = You are not good enough to grant an interview yet, but might be later on in the cycle. Check back periodically. --> Go back to B.
3. "Final Decision Made ..." = You are not good enough. --> Goto X.
D. "Select Interview Date" (A grid of dates shows up) = Call and schedule an interview date, after which "Interview Scheduled on ... " shows up. After the interview, Goto F.

F. "Decision Pending" = File pending review at the next adcom meeting (every 3rd Thursday of the month). There are 2 options from here, depending on the month:
1. Before May. --> Goto M.
2. On or After May. --> Goto N.

M. Before May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " --> Goto S.
2. "Decision Pending" (No Status Change) + "We'll keep reviewing you" Email (a few days later) = You are a good candidate, but not good enough to grant an acceptance yet. UIC will keep reviewing you at every adcom meeting. --> Go back to F.

N. On or After May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " You are (very likely) rejected. --> Goto X.
2. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. --> Goto Y.

S. There are 2 additional conditions from here:
1. There is an "Additional Correspondences" Tab in the upper-right corner on your status page AND you get a CBC Email (a few days later) = You are (very likely) accepted. --> Goto Z.
2. There is no "Additional Correspondences" Tab and/or you don't get the CBC Email = Rejection. [Note: This is tricky. The CBC email usually comes a few days after (1-4 is the consensus) the status change. Be patient. Sometimes, the email never comes, which might be because you already had a CBC done due to an acceptance at another school. In some instances, the CBC Email even comes after the snail-mail. If after a week, neither the tab nor the CBC email shows up, it's very likely a rejection. You've probably already received snail-mail by now alerting you to it.] --> Goto X.

X. "Final Decision Made ..." = Rejection ... Wait for a "Thin Letter" via snail-mail.

Y. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. ... The CBC Email no longer acts as an indicator of an acceptance. If you get accepted off of the waitlist, then Goto Z, else Goto X.

Z. "Final Decision Made ..." + "Additional Correspondences" Tab + CBC Email = (very likely) Acceptance ... Wait for a "Fat Packet" via snail-mail. [Note: Sometimes CBC emails come after the packet. CBC emails also might never arrive if you got an acceptance to another school that also does CBC through AMCAS.]

FINISH

*** NOTE: There are no guarantees in the above information, since there is always the chance that UIC changes things up. Just always keep in mind that the above is of what has happened, and not what will happen.

**********************************

I want to add last year there was ONE person (as far as i know the ONLY person) who got the "Additional Correspondences" Tab and was rejected.

--> Goto X.

So if I'm reading this right, If I have just "Applicant in Process" and nothing else, they haven't read my app at all?

OOS so I don't honestly have the highest hopes at an interview, but I have some ties to the school and love the Chi so I applied anyway

So what the heck does applicant in progress mean? The same as application in progress?

So applicant in progress=your app is sitting in a pile waiting to be reviewed.

Applicant in process=they are reviewing your app.

Application in process=on hold for rereview.

There is probably some type of screening for that though cuz i submitted the secondary two days after i got it and I have been applicant in progress since then so they probably screen for top candidates and review and move down the list.

Okay that's what I figured, thank you!

Yeah definitely, or they don't go in the order that they received the secondaries. I submitted mine on July 28th and have been "applicant in progress" ever since.

I don't think they put much thought into the status indication nor do they seem to follow any order when reviewing applications. I'm still "applicant in progress" and I submitted my secondary 7/26. Some people were complete mid August and have received interviews and my application doesn't seem to have been looked at according to the status page. I guess we just have to wait out the mess!

I didn't want to quote your entire (long) post, so I used it as a symbol of ommision. But wanted to expresss my appreciation regardless because your post was helpful.
Oh haha, thanks and you're welcome.

You can just never tell if people are sincere or not on the Internet.

I called them the other day. The lady I spoke to was very nice and helpful. She basically told me the applications are reviewed out of order, and that if you're in progress, it means it has not entered the review process.
