+1 Michigan's is my favorite admissions office so far, given their transparency and helpfulness whenever I called.

Delays do happen and there's nothing we can do about that.

For one of my parents I included their name but put N/A in every other box. Can't say whether that was the right thing or not because I didn't call and ask them but if you do do it at least you won't be the only one.

My grades & MCAT aren't bad but they are on the low end of what's acceptable for UMich. I'm a nontrad and recent grades are good, but bad way back in my first two years of college. I keep debating whether or not to talk about that in there to acknowledge it or if it will sound defensive. I was first in my family to go to college and my dad began aggressive cancer treatment my freshman year. I mentioned my dad's illness in my PS though not in that context.

I didn't add mine either, mostly because I felt like mail that wasn't directly about my application (e.g. interviews or app decisions) would be a bit wasteful, and even for app-related mail, might as well just email me.

I see people freaking out over here about not knowing about interview invites...I remember seeing the UMich twitter last year and SDN and being freaked out that I wasn't getting an interview, but all these other people must be. I'd given up hope on receiving an invite from Michigan, and then BOOM come September I got my interview invite, I interviewed in October (they had lots of dates open from October onwards), and was accepted in November, and am just starting my first year off at U of M.

So for you guys worrying a lot out there, know that UMich has a LOTTTT of interview invites still to give out come the next few months. And even if you all don't get an interview, please don't panic. A lot of the medical schools (MD & DO) across the country are fantastic and filled with passionate and enthusiastic people. If U of M is not the place for you, I hope you find wherever else you may belong 🙂

Does your EC s include heavy research? Gpa at of M is only 3.7, but their ave MCAT for ooS is 36. This is a school looking to train leaders and the best, so if you have strong research with pubs, that will make up for weaker MCAT. If not, this may not be the school for you. Mayo really prizes volunteer and service work. Those types of schools may be a better fit.

I mentioned when my dad was sick and my activities show my work overlapping with school so they could connect the dots, I haven't brought up anything else or acknowledged being on the low end or anything but it is possible for them to see it. That's why I'm unsure about bringing it up and addressing it directly.

Just saw it. That person had an MCAT of 40, goes along with the theory that UMich interviews applicants with stellar stats first.

Well to be fair, he/she is MSTP, so that's a little different. Also, you never know what situation they could be in. Maybe they're trying to match schools with a significant other (quite common), in which case applying broadly is a must.

UofM definitely looks holistically at their applicants. The school's goal is to bring together a well rounded group that complements each other. The secondary matters.

This is true, I got an invite from them today around 3:30 PM! I'm applying MSTP though, and the timelines are bound to be a little different. Just wanted to let you guys know there is SOME movement on their front 🙂

Everyone who has gotten an interview so far has been MSTP, maybe that's a good sign for us MD-only applicants 😀

For most state medical schools they look at where your permanent residence is. While I'm not certain specifically about MI and UofM's policies, if you have a permanent residence you'll probably retain your in state status!

Thanks for the clarification!. my permanent address is indeed in michigan. I was actually considering trying to get a california residency, but after reading that most UCs have no preference, I thought I would use that for michigan hehe.

Their residency standards are pretty strict actually, you should check out their website for all the specifics but if you don't have any local immediate family that are also permanent residents you won't get residency for their purposes automatically. You'll have to jump through some extra hoops.

Sure, I've got a 3.9/520 with okay ECs but good research. I'll be interviewing in late October as of now--hope to see you there!

Just submitted my secondary and their confirmation email said that my file is complete! It's really great that UMich will consider applications without needing LORs first!
