2015-2016 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Happy to report that I have been ACCEPTED!!! #GoBlueMed

Funny thing: I had the email and didn't open the vid until after I got a congrats email from a medical student. Should have found SDN sooner. lol

Congrats! That video was quite the surprise lol.

Are you guys MSTP, or did you interview in Feb? Congratulations!
I was MSTP. I just called to clarify the two emails. I was waitlisted by the MSTP Program and accepted by the Med school

That must've been confusing! haha. Congratulations again! (Unless you were gunning for MSTP, in which case, condolences).

Deferred in March, upper-tier waitlist just now. Email says, "this is the tier from which we pull candidates should we make any offers." Doubt that's any different than the waitlist they say they haven't had movement on in years. Congrats to everyone here! Went here for undergrad. You'll love AA.

Deferred and placed on the waitlist in the upper-tier.

Is this a good thing? Thought they haven't had wait list movement in 7 years?
Lol it's not necessarily a good thing, yes they haven't had waitlist movement since 2010.

Their yield could change, however, due to the controversy surrounding their curriculum changes and the complaints that have been lodged at the administration throughout the year.

Ahhh okay. Thought you were excited about it because you originally had an exclamation mark on your post.

I was told the same thing by a Michigan med student! It could be different this year because of the new curriculum, but for now I'm not going to consider this as an option.

Upper-tier waitlist. It's honestly almost a relief just to have a decision at this point...been waiting since October!

Ummmmmm. As a current UMMS student I would encourage all of you that are asking for information on the "curriculum controversy and complaints lodged at administration" from the above poster to remember that he or she is not an actual student and is getting their information second hand. There is NO controversy so if you have actual questions please PM me instead of getting it from someone that really does not know what they are talking about.

For those who are saying the waitlist hasnt moved since 2010 - where are you getting this information
waitlisted today as well

OMG. was waitlisted in December, now my portal is updated accepted, but no email yet
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

EDIT: FOund the email dated 3/2 at 12:30PM in my Promotions Folder (SPAM).
All other UMMS emails came through gmail just fine. Not sure why the video got labeled that way. Anyway, all is well, actually more than well, it is great!!

Another UMMS student here. I think I know who baraboi is, and I think a lot of that person's information is first hand. And yup, there's controversy for sure amongst faculty and students about the new one year curriculum shift and Step after 3rd year; I don't know if "controversy" means that much can or will be changed though. There is for sure a good deal of controversy, and for an applicant deciding to come to UM vs ___, they should probably come to second look weekend or contact a medical student (s) directly on a one on one basis to have a more "frank" discussion. I decided to come to UMMS after learning more about the schools I was interested in; applicants need to make an informed decision, and that is what second look weekend is there to help for. Medical school will be tough anywhere you go, expect it to be a tough path and take care of yourself accordingly both before, during, and after.

I can assure you all that my information comes firsthand from multiple current students at UMMS. I don't want to stoke any more tensions in this thread so I'll be refraining from commenting on what I referred to in my earlier posts.

Per an M2, there are issues are with the transition of the M2 going on clinic rounds starting year 2, and the M1s starting clinical work early, so there is a bit a of overload in clinical capacity to handle all the med students. The current M1s are fine, and new M0s coming in won't be affected, it is the M2 that are getting squeezed. That is what I heard. No worries, this is MICHIGAN!!! GO BLUE.

Congrats on the acceptance! What tier waitlist were you placed in before getting the acceptance?
No tier, was waitlisted back in December, never a tier indicated, just said waitlist details would be coming March 15.

FYI, Found the email and video in my "promotions" spam folder. All is good, really too good. Happy Day, and Go Blue.

I can't wait to meet all the accepted students during SLW! For the difficulty and stresses that come with being a medical student, I was very impressed with the quality of life of the medical students.

I would also be leery of the post above that talked about a controversy with the new curriculum. Beware that this suggests that there are contentious problems with the curriculum. Anecdotal reports of med students complaining is not a strong argument for a controversy. Considering these complaints may be non-existent or if the poster is being truthful, it may be a very small sample of kids complaining relative to the entire student body that would experience these changes. What did they complain about specifically? A lot of the students I talked to during my interview either had no clue or said it that we would be fine with changes. Remember, a school as high quality as Michigan is not going to set students up for failure. Also, as in any situation, your success is largely a function of your drive and motivation. As long as the resources are available you will be fine.

Thank you for posting this. It is the exact perspective to have. The way that the original post was phrased implies that there are major issues at UMMS that are permeating our learning. This is just not the case. I cannot emphasize enough how dedicated the administration and faculty are here. Yes, they are working through the clinical transition with the compressed curriculum. However, there are so many layers to that and honestly it will be fine. This is Michigan and they have no incentive to mess this up. It is not as if the students were being trained poorly in the past. The curriculum changes are only meant to enhance the experience. I have loved it. Early clinical experience, more time for clinical electives, clinical reasoning in month two, etc. Come to SLW and talk to the Deans. They will lay it all out there for you. Then make the decision for yourself instead of getting the information off this website. Even if the above poster spoke to half a dozen current students remember that is a SMALL sample size. Each class is 170-180 students and depending on the day or the student you can get vastly different perspectives.

Michigan's quality of life is incredible. Again, I am always happy to answer specific questions you may have.

Every school in every field will have people up in arms about something. It gets old when you figure out its the same kind of people at each program.

Deferred and now "upper tier waitlisted" as well. Anybody know if this is actually any different from the regular waitlist?

IMO it's better to have a frank back and forth in this thread which clearly has current students willing to talk than it is to send a bunch of PMs.

I am not sending any PM's and will refrain from commenting on this topic. To those going to SLW, I encourage you to ask the M1s (admissions+non-admissions representatives) there about their experiences with the curriculum. I only passingly referred to what I've heard and did not intend for this to be an argument in of itself on SDN.
