2015-2016 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed in early December and heard back three weeks later.

Both of my interviewers were EXTREMELY professional and made me feel comfortable. They matched my interviewers to my experiences. As in one of my interviewers graduated from my alma mater with the same major as me and worked at two places I volunteered. The other interviewer ended up discussing healthcare in the rural area I grew up because they used to practice there.

I know that i was not the only one that they did this for - another interviewee in my group said they matched her interviewer with common experiences like engineering and healthcare abroad so they talked for quite a while.

I apologize you didn't get this same feeling. I just wanted to post so that others may know that it could have just been your one interviewer because almost everyone I have talked to (n=15+) who interviewed at the U of M - Twin Cities had very positive experiences for both interviews. 🙂
Yeah, that seemed to be the consensus in my interview group as well. Everyone I talked to that day said they had extremely positive experiences with both interviewers. It's just unfortunate that I happened to have the short straw. But then again, one cannot actually tell how the interviewer is feeling behind the face you see. I'm trying to convince myself that they were just testing me haha.

Anyone hear anything about the prematriculation program yet? Also, is the Twin Cities ReVisit before or after our deadline to make a final decision on schools? I'm leaning towards Duluth but would like to visit the Twin Cities campus again before I make that final decision.

Just got waitlisted. Interviewed on 11/30. Gotta say i am a bit surprised given that on my interview day one of my interviewers never showed up and i was thus interviewed by a distracted and frazzled member of the admissions staff. My other interviewer was an hour late and when he did interview me, he asked me very few questions and gave me career advice and said how the program would be a good fit for me and how to consider it given my other acceptances. Not that either of my interviews were bad, they just didn't seem to be very useful in evaluating me as a candidate. Guess it was a long shot anyways since i'm OOS.

They leave it quite vague as to when we can expect to hear back from them about our status, saying we for sure will know by May 15th, which is after the date we have to decide what school we're going to, sooo....

Exact same story with me. Interviewed 11/30, OOS, one of my interviewers didn't show up and I got interviewed an hour later while missing all of the presentations about the school... A little bummed to be wait listed because I really did like what I did get to see and learn about the school, but hoping to hear something before April 30th which is when I will be deciding where I am going to school!

Anyone know if there have been any IIs or pre-II rejections recently?

I was complete Oct 21 and am wondering whether I've been passed over for now or might be hearing back soon.

Ditto. I called asking if they place applications 'on hold' and the lady was just confused and said "either you will be asked for an interview or you won't".

Can anyone comment on the clinical years of U of M?

I'm an MS3 at the U. Anything in particular you would like to know?

Thanks for your response! Is it a lottery system? Do students feel supported by faculty and their peers throughout years 3 and 4?

Also when do you first start seeing patients? And how much team based learning would you say years 1&2 have?

So incredibly excited to be interviewing here tomorrow! Does anyone have any words of wisdom or advice they wish they had known going into the interview?

MS4 here. As a student at the U I feel it's my obligation to mention one of my experiences here to incoming students choosing between schools. Although originally from Minnesota, I attended an out of state college for undergrad. That school offered me an acceptance in addition to the U, which I should have taken. Coming back to Minnesota and especially going to school here made me remember all of the reasons I left the state, including extreme passive aggressiveness, very cold people, preexisting friend circles that are impossible to join, and a terrible climate. These reasons were amplified in medical school while dealing with other students, professors, and the power structure in rotations. "Minnesota Nice," my ars... Can't wait to leave for my residency. Won't be coming back.

Can any current/other accepted students speak to how hard it is to get delayed matriculation at the TC campus? I recently started working in a new gene sequencing lab that is growing very quickly, giving me the opportunity to be a part of major innovation. If I were able to work here for another year, I'd gain a ton of lab skills for gene sequencing and a better understanding of a variety of genetic diseases. I would also be able to pay off my undergrad loans before I take on more debt... I know the Twin Cities campus is very selective with delayed matriculation though, so I'm wondering if there's anyone I can talk to about my situation to get some specific input.

I would call and talk to Dimple about the Flex MD program. See if you can defer or take the first year of flex.

Rejected pre-II today 🙁

IS, 3.3 GPA (trending up), 517 MCAT, lots of clinical experience.

So sorry to hear. I hope you got interviews elsewhere.

i have an II for med feb.. Wondering if I'm interviewing for a spot or waitlist?

Aside from robin911, has anyone who interviewed on 12/4 heard back yet?

My Friend and I both interviewed on 12/4. She is OOS (strong state connection tho) and got the call on last Thursday! I am so nervous because I am pretty sure they told our group 8 weeks. Were almost at 9.

When I interviewed in January we were told that half the seats have been filled and we were interviewing for a spot in the class. So go in with confidence I think you still have a chance.

thanks.. really want to go here.

Was the interview conversational?
Mine was extremely conversational. No shortage of tough topics but I actually loved my first interview and though we had a fascinating conversation. They definitely matched her to my interests and background.

Where did you go for undergrad?

Does anyone know if the U of M Twin Cities or Duluth are receptive to letters of intent? I have been "waitlisted" at both places and the rank has not yet come out. Could a LOI affect your rank on the waitlist?

Complete 9/20, Haven't heard anything from this university...do they do silent rejection?

I don't know about Duluth, but UMN Twin Cities doesn't take any updates at all (including letters of intent) post-interview. This "no updates" policy extends to the waitlist, as well. 🙁

Just a heads up for other OOS applicants — II today, secondary submitted early December.

Edit: Forgot to mention, TC.

I am another MS4 at the U and wanted to share my experience as well. Overall, I've had a very positive experience here. I think the clinical training is very good and the vast majority of attendings and residents I've worked with are knowledgeable, friendly people who are enthusiastic to teach med students. The administration is receptive to student feedback (there have been several significant changes for the better made during both the clinical and preclinical years curriculum since I have been here). I am from MN originally and went out of state for college. Coming back to MN it was not difficult to make friends with fellow classmates who I had never known before med school. No med school is perfect and Minnesota has it's shortcomings but if I were to do it all over again I would definitely pick the U.

Accepted!! Just got the call earlier today. Interviewed 12/8. IS, LizzyM of 69
Congrats! I also got accepted in January. Did you receive a official email
after the call? If I like to accept the offer what should I do? Thanks.
