2015-2016 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have any insight on how much the wait-list 'moves' after rankings are released? I know it varies from one application cycle to the next, but just wondering if I should still have my hopes up for an acceptance here or if I should be planning for a rejection.

IS, interviewed: November, WL: January

Last year they ranked the waitlist and had a hotline you could call to find out how much the waitlist moved. I think they announced the ranking in May and it moved 8 spots if I remember right.

Hey, new here but can anyone comment on what the AAMC March 15th deadline is about and how it relates to the the U of MN. Does this mean that after March 15th medical schools generally only give out wait lists since AAMC requires schools to give out at least as much acceptances as they have seats by March 15th? Is this true for the U? I noticed from the last few years threads the U has only giving out wait list emails this time of year and not acceptances so just wondering if anyone has any insight. Thanks.

I called a few days ago and was told February interviewees will begin receiving calls this upcoming Wednesday (April 6th)

Did they say if there was any open spots left.. or is it all waiting list from here on?

Interviewed on 1/22 and received an email today notifying me that I've been placed in the "Hold category." Anyone have any insight as to what that means and/or compares to the wait list?

"Being placed in the Hold category means that a final decision on your application will be made in early May, however we will try to get you a decision before then if at all possible. The next time you are notified of a decision you will be informed in writing as to whether you have been accepted to the class or placed on the ranked Alternate List."

I've looked through the previous year's thread and can't find any reference to a "Hold category."

Those who were waitlisted received the message of

"Being placed in the wait list category means that a final decision on your application will be made at a later date in the cycle. The next time you are notified of a decision you will be informed in writing as to whether you have been accepted to the class, placed on the ranked Alternate List, or not accepted."

I assume this means those who are on Hold will not have the possibility of being "not accepted" outrightly. Instead the worst case scenario for you right now is being on the Alternate List. That's what I would guess. I'm hearing this for the first time as well.

Interviewed 1/19 - got the "Hold category" e-mail today as well.

Looks like I am in the same boat, interviewed on 1/22 and received the "On Hold" email yesterday afternoon...

She didn't specify. But, she did say people will begin getting called on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure they only call people that are accepted.
I'm honestly not too familiar with the system but it seems pretty bizarre to me that they would ask people to fly there for an interview if there were no spots left and it was just for alternate positions.
From her tone and wording it seems to me that we have a chance of acceptance still at this point, but I guess we'll find out pretty soon!

I called in, asking when Feb interviewees should hear back by, and I was told they're still reviewing the files and will be discussing them at the next committee meeting (which I assume is next Wednesday). Just felt like sharing that so you all aren't too paranoid about the wait. It does make sense, since they were still on Jan applicants last Mon.

Please post if you do get accepted though! So we all know that acceptances are going out 🙂

I got my financial aid summary in mail today. FYI for those waiting on it.

Did anybody from the February interviews hear back yet?

I've called a few times and have a little bit of info. They said that some people from February have heard but they are still contacting people. I asked her if there were any spots left for acceptance or if just space on the alternate list and she said they were still accepting people!! Fingers crossed some of us get called this week!

Yay! Good news for the February interviewees 🙂

Sorry if this a dumb or easy question... what is the latest that they can let you know if you are rejected, waitlisted, or accepted? April 30th? I haven't heard a peep for 10 weeks.

I called in and was told that their last meeting is April 27th and that they're still reviewing files and handing out acceptances to Feb. interviewees.

Any ideas of when waitlisted applicants will be notified of their status going forward?

According to my friend who is a current U of MN first year, applicants last year received their waitlist positions on the last Friday of April. Since that would only be two days from now and the committee's last meeting is today this may be an optimistic expectation. However, I was informed that a committee separate from the standard admissions committee ranks the waitlist so I guess anything is possible.

I called this morning and they said they are trying to get final decisions out (as far as if your waitlisted, rejected, or accepted) by May 6.... the stress continues! :nailbiting::dead:

First time to write on this thread, but have been following this application cycle. Has anyone from 2/19 heard back yet? Thanks!

Well I wasn't 2/19 but I was 2/9 and I haven't heard anything yet. My guess is that they made final decisions on February interviewees yesterday in their committee meeting and will be giving out the decisions next week.

Since April 30th lies over the weekend, is the multiple acceptance deadline extended to the 2nd?

I'm a February interviewee anxiously waiting. Haven't heard a peep in 10 weeks...

same here. I probably look neurotic for posting so much in the last 2 weeks... but I'm having such a hard time waiting. I just want to know something, anything!

I do not think you are alone in this, the waiting simply sucks. Hopefully we hear good news soon.

You're definitely not alone! February interviewee here as well; anxiously waiting to hear anything...

I think most of us feel the same, almost twelve weeks!

I'm not too hopeful anymore. I bet they are just getting the waitlist ranked and will send out emails today or tomorrow afternoon.

So is everyone else operating under the assumption that waitlist people will hear something today? Or maybe the May 6 self-imposed deadline doesn't apply to waitlisted people... Guess I'll just call in and ask.

Just called: ranked alternate list is going out today.

Accepted! Got the call this morning from Dimple. I'm so crazy happy, MN is such a great school. IS, interviewed 2/9, nontrad with graduate degrees, and a reapplicant.

Congrats to those of you also recently accepted. I feel for those of you still waiting to hear and others who will be reapplying--that was me a year ago. Happy to offer my story/advice/or words of encouragement to those interested. Best of luck to everyone.

Number 124 on alternate list. OOS. Most likely will withdraw to attend Stony Brook. Good luck guys.

Just got rejected... Had to wait 12 weeks 🙁
Me too. Out of state but strong instate ties. I went to high school in MN and my parents are still there. 36 MCAT 3.79 GPA. January interview.

Anyone know how much the alternate list typically moves and how quick? Number 2 on the alternate list currently.

A few weeks ago I looked back at SDN posts about the wait list last year (2014-2015 cycle), and this was what I found (I think this is right but I haven't checked recently). Hope this helps!

April 24: ranked list sent out
May 4: Original #4 is number 1
May 11: “Original #7 is number 1”
June 10: “The original number 12 is now number 1”
June 30: “13 is now number 1”
August 6: “no more movement since June”

Yup, rejected. 38 MCAT, 3.80 cGPA In-State. Interviewed late August. Waited quite a while for that bad news.
