2015-2016 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello. When I interviewed there were 16 of us. I had 2 different one on one interviewers. I interviewed with a faculty and a staff member. My interviewers had definitely read my application careful but I think were blind to GPA/MCAT.

Any idea when the last II's were given out? My secondary app was complete mid September and haven't heard anything from them. 4.0 gpa and 511 MCAT. Technically I'm OOS, despite living 35 minutes away from UM campus (dang Wisconsin/Minnesota state line) and attend a Minnesota University. Just curious of my chances of getting an II at this point.

The only way to get status updates from the U of M is via email correct? They do not have status updates on the applicant portal, right?

There is an II a few posts ago with details.

Most seem to be hearing between 4-8 weeks after they submit the secondary. This is not a rule though.

Where did you find the information about by email? because they won't tell you your status by phone

So the portal doesn't tell you much except if you are complete or not. Everything is done via email and they will let you know the dates they have available. I would say between 4-8 weeks is a good time to wait for a II.

Really appreciate the input everyone is giving for II's, if anyone who's been has anymore tips I would really appreciate it.

Same here, and at twin cities, people who interviewed after me got acceptances by phone. I'm thinking we both got either waitlisted or rejected post-interview at twin cities 🙁.
I think it has to do with what Dimple said about decisions: your complete file goes to three people on the admissions comm and if all three say yes you're in, if not it goes to the 30 or so people in adcom and they then decide your fate. The people that were rejected post interview probably got a no from all three people in round one.

that's interesting i dont remember hearing that. did she give a time frame for the full committee?

I submitted my secondary on 8/25 and got all LORs ready on 9/5. I got
the II on 10/19. You should get yours soon.

Anyone know if Minnesota offers scholarships to out of state applicants? Or just in state?

I know this is a stretch but has anyone received status update or II invite that applied around 9/10?
I am IS so anxiously waiting to hear back.

I am also IS and was complete 8/28. Haven't heard back yet but expecting a response any day now!

I interviewed on 9/18 and haven't heard anything.

Waitlisted 10/27. Interviewed 8/31. Confused about the waitlist. Has anyone so far received a post-interview rejection?

Does anyone know the difference between the waitlist and the ranked alternative list?

+1 Is it even worth submitting this late?

Depends on if you are IS or OOS. If you are IS...I would say YES seeing as like 80% of the class is IS. But if you are OOS it could be a lot of work for a rejection (the length of the secondary app is shear brutality). But last year U of M interviewed into March.

In sum: if you are IS or have significant ties I would apply. If you are OOS it's a major gamble plus $75 and like 5-6 hours of your time plus what seems like a 2-3 month wait period. At least, I sent my IS app around Aug 20 and have not heard anything....

Wondering where you got those stats from? Are they listed on their website? MSAR shows that 37 of the 197 OOS interviewees matriculated. As there is usually a 2-3x number of acceptances vs matriculations, it looks like the acceptance rate is likely closer to 40%? At least that's what i'm hoping because i am one of those OOS applicants!

I calculated them 1 to 1 from MSAR, except that I included the 7 MD/PhD acceptances as well.

Your supposition is that the ratio of acceptances vs. matriculants is equal for both IS and OOS applicants. There's really no way of knowing how many of those 160 interviewed were rejected, accepted, waitlisted, or waitlisted and ultimately accepted. So i only used the numbers as they were reported. Even if you assume they accepted 3x as many OOS applicants, that's still only 3.5% of the total applicant pool, compared to the 23% matriculation rate for IS applicants who simply submitted applications.

EDIT: Sorry for the word vomit, I'm sitting alone in my lab proofing a draft of a publication.

Been complete for about 10 weeks and IS. Does anyone recommend sending a pre II update on work/activities/shadowing to them?

I am in the same boat as you... been complete ~9 weeks (Also IS) and have not heard anything.
I decided (arbitrarily) that if I do not hear back by Thanksgiving I am going to call. Although Thanksgiving is a month away and that seems like a long time, I know that they were doing interviews well into March last year at the U of M. A couple of people I know that are in the medical school also interviewed after Jan 1st.

In summary: I am still waiting it out....until Thanksgiving ha.

II OOS. 507, 4.0. Family in Minnesota (including MNPLS) that I visit regularly and community service that took place in MN. Super excited, one of my top schools!

Congrats!! When were you complete. I am still hoping for an II as an OOSer. Most of my family lives there and many are alums of the school and a few from the med school.

Can someone who has already interviewed speak to when the day is over? Want to see when is best for me to schedule my flight home.

Edit: Also, does anyone know if they have a student host program? Their II email is lacking much detail.

Congrats! When were you complete? I have a 4.0 and 511 MCAT. LOR were slow, so wasn't complete until 9/17. I'm OOS, but my hometown in Wisconsin is 30 minutes from the medical school, so I'm really hopping for an II...

Complete 8/28. It was right at the 8 weeks that has been fairly typical thus far for others (at least that I have read on SDN)
