2015-2016 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II as well, complete around the end of September as well, OOS! Absolutely shocked but so excited and humbled!

Does anyone happen to know the stats of how many OOS applicants are offered an interview? I can't seem to find that information anywhere.

According to MSAR, UMN interviewed 197 out of 3137 (6.3%) of OOS applicants and 492 of 832 (59.1%) of IS applicants.

Thank you for your help!

I'm just so nervous about my II here. I am OOS, with some ties to MN. However, my MCAT (new MCAT) score is fairly low. I've already been waitlisted at the only other 2 schools I have had the pleasure of interviewing at, but MN's acceptance rate of OOS students is far lower. I'm just afraid that no matter how great I interview, the committee will get to my application, see my score, and either reject or waitlist me. I realize it's always unpredictable, but I guess I'm just so drained from being so, so hopeful and then being pushed back down again. Anyway, thanks for giving me a place to vent! Best of luck to all!

OOS (ND) still waiting on my interview yea or nay, submitted my II in October. not exactly feeling hopeful at this point :/

It seems there was no acceptance announcement on Monday. No
committee meeting on 12/16?

Accepted to the UMN - Twin Cities Medical School!!! It only took them 4 weeks post interview to get back to me, which was a great surprise since they had estimated that it would take 8-10 weeks. I think the only people more excited than me were my parents. Some of you could be hearing from them shortly.

Extra info: IS, median GPA/MCAT, solid 15 experiences, and interviewed mid/late November.

When did you get the call??

Almost 10 weeks since I submitted my secondary. Glimpse of hope is slowly fading!

Think they email decisions on xmas eve?? I'm almost 12 weeks deep....

The University of Minnesota is closed both today and tomorrow, so I would imagine that they probably won't be sending anything out until Monday. Sorry!

Thanks for the info. That's possible. I am a little bit concerned...

Looking at previous forums it seems that four weeks is really quick to hear back post-interview with UMN. I'm guessing maybe they are very interested in DrFry and this is the reason for the quick decision?

It would seem weird that everyone who gets accepted from that interview date would hear in four weeks when it seems like other interview cohorts have had a longer timeline for acceptance.

Yes. I agree that makes sense. DrFry is luck and that's really good for him.

Anyone interviewing on 1/5/16? I wonder how many spots are left.

Wow, they are calling people from quite a wide range today. Congrats to those who have heard good news thus far! I interviewed late November and am OOS, wonder if i'll hear back today.

If you are interviewing soon and is able to see how many spot are still available, could you please let me know if there are still some open spot for interviews? I completed my secondary in October, but haven't heard anything back yet!

Interviewing there on Jan 25th...can anyone who has interviewed at UM-TC this cycle give any tips or advice on the interview? Is it relatively stress-free? Any walking around outside (it'll be cold, so I need to plan my outfit too)? Did your interviewers throw any curveballs or try to grill you?

This is my first MD interview this cycle and one of my top choice schools, and as an OOS applicant, I really want to make sure I am as prepared as possible!

Its a very typical interview day, nothing will surprise you. Most schools want you to leave with a very good impression and not feel stressed so that you will pick them if you have choices in the end. For all schools including this one I would recommend having a very good answer to "Why X school?" and "Why medicine?" and making sure you get a chance to say them if they don't ask directly. Thats really all it comes down to besides making a general good impression, which everyone does in their own way. None of this advice is too insightful, sorry.

I never went outside but it was raining on my date so maybe double check with someone else. You may have to walk outside to get into building but they have tunnels from certain parking garages.

Would anyone recommend sending an update with grades for the semester and new activities? I already interviewed in November

They have a strict no update policy. I think they would just not put it into your file.

Anyone know when they let people on the wait list know about the initial acceptance/rejection/ranked alternate list decision? I would assume it's after interview season is finished, but some other schools have already been pulling off the wait list mid-interviews.

When or how do they let you know you are on the wait list? Thanks.

They let you know you're on the wait list via e-mail after your interview. You get a phone call if accepted or an e-mail if you're put on the wait list or rejected. I believe whatever the decision is it should come around the same time relative to when you interviewed. Post-interview decisions seem to be coming anywhere in the 4-8 week range after your interview.

Interviewed today. Absolutely loved the school and the people. Both my interviews were extremely pleasant and enjoyable. Only bad part is waiting 8-10 weeks for a decision. We were told at the end of the day 10 weeks was most likely!

I was told 10 weeks as well, but found out in December around the 6-7 week mark. I would plan on 10 weeks because they're probably falling behind, but you never know!

Do you happen to know the statistics of the number of interiewees that are offered acceptance? I'm OOS, haven't been able to find that those numbers on the website

Does anyone know when the next round of post interview decisions will come out?

I was called about acceptance less than three weeks after my interview. So I guess it just depends.
I really don't think that there is a rhyme or reason to it because some people who interviewed in October, November, and December were called the same day that I was. I don't think that the reviews have the exact dates. guess what I am trying to say is I think that the 10-12 week mark is more of a maximum time frame.

From USN&WR, 300 OOS interviewed, 120 accepted, 38 enrolled

Thanks much.

I interviewed last week and was told that they are not offering anymore acceptances for interviewees. Now everyone will be put on the waiting list subject to rank. Good luck everyone.

Did they tell you when they started doing this? I'm just asking this because I'm curious if those who interviewed on December are affected.

Thanks for sharing. Bummer for those of us that are still hoping for an II :-/

Wait do you mean they aren't accepting any more people at all? Or that people that interview in January will be put on a waitlist? Please elaborate.

Things I don't believe, posts like this from someone with only 2 total posts. Esp. when his last post was inquiring about this...
