2015-2016 University of Virginia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Perfect, thank you so much! Did you get any sort of reply after your update, since they re-evaluate monthly?
I got the standard "thank you for the update, we will add it to your application" response. So I assume that the update will be considered during the next round of re-evaluations.

Accepted and pretty sure I'll be attending UVA. I love the curriculum, location, etc. My only reservation is I found it slightly strange that they didn't have us meet/interact with more current med students on interview day (especially compared to my experiences at other interviews). Did anyone else find it odd that there were practically no students to be seen? Maybe it was just the day I interviewed, but the school and hospital felt eerily quiet in general. Any plausible explanations?

Maybe they were busy with tests? Did classes already end? They didn't have a ton of scheduled interaction except the lunch and tour with the M4s, but we had a few random students stop by the admissions office while we were waiting for interviews just to chat.

I interviewed in September so I would think classes were in full swing. The only students I saw all day were the two M4s who gave the tour. Just found it slightly strange that we didn't even come across any other students on the whole tour or that UVA didn't make more of an effort to foster some interactions. Obviously everyone's busy, but I just felt like I missed out on getting a sense of the student culture.

But I still loved the school and from the sense I got, students were really happy to be there. I think second look would be a good place to meet other students and get a better feel for the school.

They do have a fall break sometime in September. I think the second and first years are staggered, but it's possible you just came over call break. Otherwise, you'd usually run into people in the lounge, if no where else. Or maybe both classes had classes that lasted through the 10 start time.

It's the timing of our classes 8-12, then 12-1 is lunch break/go home. The interview day is scheduled in such a way that your down time is either during class or late in the afternoon when we've already gone home. Occasionally we chill in the lounge late playing ping-pong, so I recommend not reading anything into the quietness. We're either partying in the lounge, studying in the library, home sleeping/just not aware of when you're actually available (when you're away on the tour, in presentation, or interviewing).

Really the only thing you should get out of this is that 8-12 is awesome, and we're all active doing something other than sitting in class.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, I loved everything about UVA and wouldn't let this peculiarity influence my decision, but just wanted to see if anyone else had similar experiences or if there was a good explanation. If the reason is because all of the students didn't need to be at school and were outside doing other things, that's a good enough reason for me! 🙂

Alternate list 🙁 really hoping for some movement in May!

Congrats to everyone who was accepted!

I'm interviewing on Mon Jan 25, OOS (Seattle, WA). Non-trad, finish bachelor's in 2013. Been working mostly in hospitality, and now - 7 months in clinical research.
I'll be in C'ville on Sunday if anyone wants to meet up and tour the place! Excited for this one.

Accepted today!! Agree with everything that's been said--relaxed interview, only met 2 students which was weird, and EPIC lunch!!!!
Lunch was great lol when I was there, a current medical student was reminiscing about the lunch on interview day and said that it was the best on the circuit...boy was he right.

II!! OS, LizzyM 73! Can't believe I snagged this one 🙂 Available dates were in feb, I think the 3rd, and then the following week there were a few slots!

Congrats everyone! Must have been looked over +pity+ still holding hope

All the IIs make me have so much hope! OOS and was complete early august. Crossing my fingers but congrats to those who heard!

II!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I submitted in late august so i was beginning to worry that i'd be getting a rejection here soon! i am so damn happy!!!!

IS as well and if the MSAR is accurate, then they have an amazing interview-to-acceptance ratio for in-staters! 🙂

This forum topic is not nearly as active as other VA schools, so this data is not readily available.

Does UVA tend to accept more applicants earlier in the cycle than later?

Yes, but it's because the candidates who tend to interview earlier in the season are seen by UVA as better qualified/a better fit overall. That said, you do still have a chance for acceptance later in the season and there tend to be acceptances that go out each week throughout the interview season. Many in my class interviewed in January.

Any current students know if UVA gives merit based aid. If so, how much do they usually give and how many people get it?

Very few people get merit aid at UVA- I know one classmate who had it- roughly $10k per year. I wouldn't bank on getting merit aid in estimating your COA. However, a good chunk (~40-50% I'm guessing) get need-based aid. If your household income (including your parents income unless you are married) is below ~$160k-180k, you will likely qualify for a decent amount of need-based aid. This depends on family assets and some other things, but generally holds true.

Do you know roughly when notifications for merit scholarships go out and what criteria they're based on?

Wow, they're still doing the same-week decisions even at this point in the cycle? Gotta respect a school like that.

I loved everything about UVA program/location/atmosphere when I visited. I really think I'm going to regret not attending...

For those of you yet to interview, you're in for a great treat!

Have any accepted people gotten background check or financial aid info yet? I haven't heard anything since my acceptance email and it's making me paranoid that I imagined getting accepted...

Nope nothing yet. Financial aid comes out in March I believe, you need to fill out FAFSA and their supplement for aid though. And I would assume they would do background checks after all the initial acceptances come out just to be efficient.

Ughhhhhhhhh premeds need to stop. So impatient holy crappoloni. If you got an email then you got accepted. Enjoy this sweet moment of bliss before you have to actually go to med school and study again.

FWIW background checks are done through a central private service called Certiphi. As soon as the school gets its **** together and sends off names to the service, you'll get an email telling you to give consent for the report retrieval. I've received it because my accepted school moved early. Not receiving it yet does not mean anything, before anyone asks. Have some patience

Calm down. The person was asking a legitimate question that many others probably have. Applications for financial aid are usually due sometime in March and tax forms come out in January. Don't be so critical of people wanting to get a legitimate jump on getting stuff done.

As for your question @normoblast I think they send us something this month about applying, at least that's what I read/heard.

The comment wasn't directed towards the "getting stuff done" part, but rather the "I'm paranoid I actually didn't get in because it's taking longer than I expected to get forms and stuff." It speaks to a certain kind of impatience more and more premeds have, and it's very troubling. "I got in so send me my stuff ASAP!!!" "Why hasn't my app been reviewed yet???" "When will they finally get back to me????? WHY SO LONG" It's so annoying and makes this site unbearable. It troubles me deeply that the impatient mindset that comes with a delay in getting forms to fill out is causing someone to question the legitimacy of their acceptance. That is absolutely ****ing absurd.

I also see that people are very reluctant to call out such cases of short-circuited thinking, for fear of being called out as "rude" or "insensitive" or whatever the preferred term is these days. What that amounts to is a subtle support of such thinking, one that is damaging not only to the individual whose thought is in question but also the field of medicine as a whole as these people make their way through education and careers with ridiculous risk-averse paranoia. (You know all the talk about fighting defensive medicine? Yeah, try starting with fixing paranoid premeds first but nobody ever thinks about that)

In any case, sorry, shouldn't have directed the frustration towards a single poster who's not responsible for (but is nonetheless an active part of) an entitled culture. Also not the right thread for this discussion. I've no place ITT anymore anyway, most likely getting the boot from UVA lol

Considering the amount of time, effort, and money we've all put into this whole process, its no wonder some of us are slightly anal. I think we've earned the right to be impatient. This is a big deal. As for getting in and wanting info right away, it would be nice considering some people have to pick between schools and financial aid will play a large role in making that decision.

See? It's hard to argue with people who don't even realize that their entire way of thinking is literally the definition of entitlement. "I put a lot of effort into the process and therefore I deserve quick answers." No. No. You do not. Because if you do, then if the other side is putting in a **** ton WAY MORE effort than you are (idk about you but reviewing 7000 apps and then literally meeting 1000 people sure sounds like a lot more effort than preparing 25 paper apps), they also have the right to make your ass wait for as longgggggggggggggg as they want because they deserve something too. Nobody deserves anything. As long as schools are not making it impossibly hard for you to get your duties done in time for certain decisions to be made (i.e., the time-sensitive fin aid apps), you are being treated properly.

On the other hand, "It would be nice" is a much better mindset. It's nice of people to give you like 2 full months to do something that should only take 1 week if everything is ready (fin aid). It does not mean they are required to just because you went through undergrad and put together a written app.

I was being a little facetious with the paranoid line (should have used a smiley, alas), but no worries.

Thanks for the input, all. Just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed a memo somewhere. I'll just sit tight and keep procrastinating my taxes/FAFSA.

I meant to go back and correct myself and obviously I should have since you're blowing this up. We have the right to be a little impatient. I understand the pressure these schools are under and I get I'm not going to hear when I want to. Does that stop me from being impatient, no. But that doesn't mean I don't understand and accept this is how things are. And I'm not saying I need to know right now. I meant it would be nice to have an idea of when I would hear.
