2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
just got a secondary.. was verified early july but emailed them last week to ask if i had been screened out.. guess they forgot about my application haha

I just got an email saying my status had changed but when I logged on, I'm still at the same status:
"Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile."

Has this happened to anyone else?

My status just changed to "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Once a decision has been made on your profile, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update."

Not terribly encouraging. Is this a small pool? I didn't know VCU did that. It's a different message than last year's. Anyone else have this?

I got the same email as well this morning. I guess it means our files are going to be reviewed soon and we'll find out if we're offered an interview?

That happened to me as well.

I went from

"Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile."

for the last week and a half to

"The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. If your status changes, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update."

I guess this means progress? Daring to be hopeful.....

Same here.

Is there any point in filling out secondary now? I just got email saying they got my primary. LizzyM 73, but with new mcat

I got something similar but different. Mine reads:

"The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Once a decision has been made on your profile, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update."

Why so many different statuses?

I had the "md file complete" status, then it went to "in subcommittee review", now back to "file complete"... Maybe it's an interim thing?

I think someone posted earlier in the thread what the various statuses mean based on previous years' threads.

This is the same status I got a while ago, and its supposed to be the lowest status that isnt a rejection. It'll probably be my 3rd rejection. Should be great.

When were all of you that are getting the status updates complete? @Gandy741 @idkididk @tensticks

I dont even remember now nor do I have it written down. Its been a long time. I've had that above status for weeks now.

Competition is too rough now. You have to have a 47 MCAT now or do Peace Corps or be Alvin York in the military to get into a MD school.

Don't forget the A+++++ in any science course you take

Seriously though anyone have any thoughts as to why my status would go from being in subcommittee review back to the complete status? Did they hate me? Hahaha

Anyone know what the requirements are for a secondary? or is it reviewed on a case-by-case basis? Also, I have a lower MCAT, but am waiting on new MCAT 8/18..presumably they would wait before making a decision on me correct?

why would you not? supposedly they have a thorough pre-secondary screen. it's a relatively short secondary, relatively cheap too. it's also still kinda early in the cycle

Just got an II for the MD program. I'm IS with a LizzyM ~77. I haven't had the issues that everyone else seems to be having with the portal though.

Seeing these emails about not enough interview spots getting me worried. I per-wrote secondary, how much is it ?

Got an email telling me I had a status update this morning. Logged into the portal to see an interview invite. I did the post-bacc program here and will have a guaranteed interview, and I was told I would receive a phone call about scheduling an interview. I guess I will ignore the status update...

Still stuck at the initial complete status.

Sorry to hear that :/ hope you have some luck soon! I was complete around July 21st, since the premed committee didn't want to send out the packet letter until I've received 4 secondaries. Anyways, this is the first school I've heard back from so I'm not too bummed.

My stats are 3.58 and 34 (with an old score of 27), biomedical engineering major

"Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile."

Had the initial message since 7/23. Still no change to the other messages you guys are receiving.

Status update email this morning. My status changed from

"Your profile is currently being reviewed by the Sub-Committee. This review will determine whether or not your profile will be forwarded for File Review. You may check your status online at any point during this process."

to

"Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile."

Is it just me or is this backwards?

+1 Same thing happened to me. I went from "complete" to "sub-committee" back to "complete." I called and they said I was "checked off to go to file review." Who knows...

Happened to me too, hopefully it means I got sent to File Review also, cause that would mean the subcommittee didn't decide to reject me

Any tips or websites about ethics that may be useful to answering this prompt?

Hey!

On the home page it says:

Please note that your file may be put on hold for several reasons:

Hold for MCAT means that we are assuming you are scheduled to take the test. The Committee wishes to wait to evaluate your file until those scores are available. MCATS taken after September of the year of application will not be considered. If you are not planning to take or retake the MCAT, please notify us immediately.

Hold for Grades: The file review done by the Committee has determined that you are engaged in coursework which may affect their decision about whether to invite you for an interview. It is imperative that you submit grades for current or proposed courses in a timely fashion. Any file on hold for grades that are not submitted by January 31st will automatically be rejected. If you did not take the course indicated on your primary or supplemental application, please notify us immediately.

This doesn't mean that it concerns me right because it says my application is complete and I do not accept to take the MCAT again and I have already graduated. Do you guys have this notice on your home page as well?

Thanks!

It seems like there are 4 levels of status updates:

1. "The committees file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. We are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviews as soon as possible IF we have an adequate number of interview slots."

2. "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are unable to grant an interview, you will be notified by e-mail in March."

3. "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Once a decision has been made on your profile, you will receive an email regarding your recent status update."

4. This is mostly correct. If you look at last year's thread and the year before, there's a "hierarchy" of statuses.

The first one is basically a guaranteed interview - you should be getting an invite within days, probably.
The second is the "may" status and is generally promising if you get it early in the cycle.
The third is less promising, though people have still gotten invites with this status.
The fourth is definitely the least promising. Not sure if anyone with this status has gotten an interview, but again that's just from what I have seen watching the threads over the past two cycles.

You're right - everyone has this! It's just a general notice.

I have the fourth status as of today. I went through some threads from years past looking for info. It is unusual, but some people with this status have gained interview invites. Not getting my hopes up, but not gonna be down about it either.

Good approach - after all, it's not a rejection. Good luck!

Oh wait, I misread, I have the third haha. Last year, it was listed as the fourth I think. Nevertheless, what I said about people getting II with that status is valid. Cheers.

Don't read into the statuses too much guys! Yes, it is better to have one that says "We are very interested" than "we MAY not get to everyone" than "we will consider your file further" and so on. That being said, nothing really matters until you've been offered an interview. If you read through the thread from last year, people received interviews from each of the statuses, which serve as a barometer of your initial priority score.

Just to keep things in perspective, worrying yourself over this is an unproductive use of your time! Coming from a first-year who's relearning biochem, please go enjoy yourself as much as possible while applying. Good luck everyone!!!

Well, I just called about my lack of secondary (submitted 7/23) and they said it might be a few more WEEKS. Sucks that people have started getting IIs and I can't even submit my application yet D:

Someone from another thread just said "I didn't get a secondary from them either, I emailed them and it seems like they had forgotten about my app and so they just sent me one today! Was verified July 2nd" so I just emailed them. Will keep you updated!

Oh dang. Yeah definitely let me know, if emailing does the trick I will get on board with that!

Just for reference purposes, I received my secondary today. My primary was submitted to them 07.26.

MD/PhD applicant here, do we really have to send the form to our references and have them mail it to the admissions office, or are the letters from AMCAS enough?
