2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey y'all I have a quick question about the 1 year biology w/ lab pre-req. Do they accept upper-level biology classes with lab? I got exempt from Gen Biology 1 due to my CLEP scores, but my exempt classes doesn't show on my transcript. Do you think they'll accept an immunology and/or molecular biology class with labs to fulfill that requirement?

I just got an email that my application status had changed but it still just says "your profile is being reviewed by the Sub-committee." Has this happened to any of you guys?

Yes. It happens a lot.
When I called the school, they told me that sometimes notifications like that occur when someone accesses your file or checks it out, etc. I don't know if that's the only cause, but for sanity's sake I'd just presume that any notifications just mean that someone is working on/paying attention to your app and you will progress to the next step eventually!

This thread has so many pages! More than most any other allo school I've seen.
I had to browse almost 10-15 pgs and still couldn't find a single person who was accepted post-interview.
I'm wondering how long the whole turnaround process takes post-interview. Anyone know?

There were a few acceptances in October.

VCU has four dates that they issue acceptances: One in Oct, Dec, Feb, and (if I remember right) March. After you interview you'll be placed on hold until the next "news" date (you may be deferred to a later date than the very next one after you interview).

Post Interview hold today. Now it's a waiting game until december

Finally put on post interview hold today, hoping for good news on the next acceptance date

Hey guys!

M1 at VCU, feel free to message me any questions you may have regarding the school! Good luck on your interviews!

I was wondering how VCU does the secondary review process. I have been complete for almost 4 months and no one has even read it 🙁

I interviewed October 7th, was put on hold October 15th and was accepted October 16th.

Come on, the only people who call it MCV are older than 60 or try hards. Could you imagine if a UVA guy told you he went to Central College or a Penn State guy said he went to the Farmer's High School?
When I interviewed there 4 years ago for the BS/MD program, they still called the med school MCV.

Hey! I was accepted and will def be attending MCV. I had a question tho, is there a way to get extra tickets for the White Coat Ceremony? Thanks!

First off, CONGRATS! So your best bet would be to call the admissions office. They will usually send out an email in the weeks leading up to the ceremony regarding extra tickets. Usually your classmates will have tickets to spare. Make sure to join the FB page and ask your classmates early on!

This is tough. I actually received the "May" status and received an interview shortly after. I also know of people who got the "very interested" status and didn't receive an interview until months later. It seems that there is a method to their madness, but my knowledge is very limited on the matter.

Okie dokie! I know we only get 4 tickets, but the problem is I have a few families which amounts to like 12- 15 people. This might be difficult, but I want them all to come.

That'll be a good question for Momma Mack this upcoming Spring.

Regarding the naming: the official name is the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. That being said, *everyone* including the Dean still calls the school MCV. There's some debate now if we can get MCV on our diplomas instead of VCUSOM.

Harsh. Didn't realize this was such a point of pride/contention, being a lowly west coaster. I was just trying to poke some innocent fun, sorry for stepping on your toes buddy.

Ohhhhh was that a joke? I thought you were being serious! People have been jerks on here in the earlier trends, so I thought this was an extension of that. Sorry mate!

For those who were accepted, at what time during the day (eastern time) did you get your acceptance email? I have a deposit for another school due on the 15th and I would prefer to go to VCU so I am hoping to be accepted before I have to put down alot of $$$

Is the deposit not refundable?

Is the deposit not refundable?
I asked the same, and someone answered me from their website that it is refundable (they didn't reference the refundable part at all in acceptance materials, just that it needed to be in within 2 weeks).

Its non-refundable unfortunately. So it would really suck to pay $1000 then find out a few hours later that I got into VCU haha. Its due by 8pm Eastern time so hopefully I can get into VCU by then

The email usually goes through a couple minutes after 6pm. I think they said the 16th when I interviewed but the website and email says 15th.

Just got a notification that I am currently under review by the subcommittee! Finally some movement on my file

I got an interview invite. I'm not sure when I was complete. Possibly 10/18. I got the "We may or may not have a spot to interview you bc everyone's busy" update a week or two ago if you were all curious. Best of luck to everyone still waiting.

I received my acceptance email at approximately 6:28pm. Hope that helps!

Man this is simply saddening... I honestly thought I would hear back by now... I am complete now for 4 months at this school and nobody has even read my secondary 🙁. Am I really ranked that low on their list of secondary applicants??!!?1

I'm an OOS applicant, complete around July 23rd and I just got a status update last night. It was the "MAY" status so I'm not holding my breath but I'm happy to finally have an update after over 4 months of waiting.

My interviewer never responded to my thank you email (I also sent her a thank you card) but she did send a nice email after I was accepted.

Is there any reason why MCV would be more impressive/desirable than VCU? I feel like there's some history here that I don't know about...

Edit: Nevermind, looked it up. I'll join the other lowly west coaster in not being bothered by it either way. I'm glad to know it has a good history, tho. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/medical-college-of-virginia-vcu.339212/
Yeah, you probably read this already but as a VA native the impression is usually that VCU's undergrad is okay, but not really the most prestigious school in VA, especially when you consider UVa, Tech, William & Mary, whereas MCV is known as a good medical school. I know some VCU/MCV peeps were kind of worried about MCV being off the diploma a few years ago. It doesn't matter either way, but FWIW my own personal doctors/doctors I've shadowed who went there or did their residencies there always called it MCV.

^ When I interviewed the med student called it MCV, the dean looked at him, and then he was like 'or VCU... '

It seems that the students like it being MCV also so the name will likely not fly away from common colloquia anytime soon.

Still haven't received the secondary despite submitting Amcas around Aug/Sept. My stats are very competitive for this school, but not the the point where they would auto screen out. This is incredibly frustrating as it seems my application hasn't even been glanced over. Fortunately, the rest of my applications have been moving along.
They don't auto-screen. They just don't send secondaries to 2/3rds of applicants

Same position here.

Pre interview rejection today :/ Complete late August. Pretty sad about this one
