When you check your email and see this in the subject "FIU HWCOM invites you"..... and you get excited b/c u think you got an II, but open it up just to see they are inviting you to their mammogram thing....why fiu, why

LOL My heart jumped out of my chest for a second before I realized it wasn't an II.

Just submitted a paper last night so for the first time in a while I have NOTHING to do until Monday so I figured I could write about my interview experience if anyone has their day coming up!
So the school is beautiful, newer looking health buildings, their PBL rooms have these super tall doors/windows, and their four student lounges seem like places where I would actually want to hang out. It seemed like they had tables and chairs everywhere so I feel like it would be impossible not to find a quiet place to study. Their anatomy lab was not in the pits of hell which I definitely appreciated. Not that this is a deal breaker but they all get those dope laptop/tablets that fold all the way over and you can write on them which is probably clutch for lecture. Dean Jones talked to us in the beginning and end of the day, he's awesome. He seems like he seriously loves his job and gave overall advice on this application cycle outside of just FIU which I thought was cool. The curriculum they presented had a structure very similar to most newer programs, i.e fully integrated, which seems to work considering the average step score is ridiculous (in a great way) plus there's the taking it after 3rd year thing. I got down there a few days early with some friends so I got to see where some of the clinical affiliates are (Cleveland clinic, mount sinai etc.) which were really nice. You can see that the community aspect is truly emphasized by faculty, students and everyone which is appealing to me at least. My actual interviews were sooooo relaxed, they seemed like they were trying to get to know who I was with some general big picture questions mixed in. I probably sound as though I'm trying to advertise for the school but I can't really think of any cons other than maybe it was hot but for us Floridians that's the case 10 months out of the year. They mentioned that it was still fairly early (Oct. 17th) so I feel as though they have a lot more II's to give out. Best of luck to everyone this cycle, I know I'm struggling to stay patient/sane in general but it'll be all over before we know it!

We do hang out in these a lot. It is not uncommon to have ping-pong or foosball games running. Great stress relief after 4 hours of lecture.

There is never a shortage of study spaces between the personal medical student study rooms, medical library, and general study areas.

They are clutch.

He's the bomb and it's not just an interview day act. Dean Jones is always like that.

FIU definitely focuses on the communities of Miami. Those who have upcoming interviews take note.

They mentioned that it was still fairly early (Oct. 17th) so I feel as though they have a lot more II's to give out.

A quick look at my interview schedule confirms there are still plenty of interview dates left in this cycle. Good luck.

Has anyone received an e-mail with instructions on completing the diversity scholarship application?

Those who interviewed on Sept 26th or that week, when are we supposed to hear back?

Has anyone who interviewed on Sept 23rd heard back yet? Or has your portal status changed? Mine hasn't

Does anyone know how long it takes to hear the post interview decision after the status has been changed to "Admissions Comittee Review Complete"? My status changed to this at about 3pm yesterday and I haven't heard from them yet. I interviewed mid September.

Sure. I'm IS. 4.0 GPA, 519 MCAT. I was complete around 8/12.

Does anyone know how long after admissions committee scheduled status you find out if you got in?

Is FIU pass/fail? is attendance at lecture mandatory or is it stream casted? Is there a 1.5 year preclinical? Why is this stuff not online?

FIU is not pass/fail. We get letter grades for our major classes and can track our performances through a graph of our numerical grades in each class (extremely useful tool btw). Lecture is mandatory depending on the class. For our heavy classes, so far, attendance has been optional except for certain days. So as you can tell, attendance all depends on what you're doing in class that day and what class it is. Other classes are mandatory for each session. Each lecture is recorded and posted the same day so if you're someone who likes to stay home then that's an option. I haven't heard of a 1.5 preclinical. I just always assumed 2 years preclinical+ 2 years clinical but idk. These are all questions you can ask at interview day.

Two questions:

What is the MSAR data for 10th percentile and is it too late in the cycle to apply? I have not even begun my AMCAS, applied only to DO and got into some good schools. My MCAT is below 500 and that was essentially my only factor as to not applying to MDs and my sGPA is below average as well...

Thanks!

I would advise against applying this late with those stats. Early in the game is always best with low stat applicants. Good luck.

My sGPA and cum GPA are 3.68 but my MCAT is 498. I am a south Florida resident and have some solid experiences (TA and ER scribe). Does anyone know my chances at FIU? Someone got in this year with a 498 but I heard their GPA was veryy high

I was accepted and my sGPA is 3.48 and my cGPA is 3.66, but my MCAT is 516 and I was complete 7/22.
Are you IS here?

yes I'm IS! but not an FIU alum, however. I've been complete since 9/22

I was completed late August but my portal has not changed (still shows Secondary Application Completed, Last Status update 08/30/16). Is this normal? LizzyM 69

Pre-matriculation bucket list?

Ya. You will not have much time when school starts. Enjoy your time now before school starts because the burnout is real. That's not a dig on FIU, it's just the nature of medical school. Time disappears, work piles up, opportunities for free time are sparse.

Does that mean they haven't even looked at your application? Mine says the same thing 🙁

I looked through the thread and was trying to find some info/input on the status thing too. Mine says "Preliminary Review Completed" and the date of 9/13/2016 at 12:44 pm. But I still have had no communication prior to this and or after it.

So seeing as others have had "secondary complete" and got IIs and others with "Preliminary Review Completed" got IIs, then others with both statuses have had nothing, it seems to be hit or miss and not very linear...like I wish it would be 🙁

Hahaha mine has that since the last week of June. "Secondary Application Completed"

I accepted the silent rejection.

I hate it when they do that 🙁

I don't know why you people keep ignoring what I've said before. "Preliminary Review Completed" =/= Rejection. I had that status for months before my interview before I was interviewed and accepted.

Good luck to those interviewing tomorrow, there's a 70% chance I'll be at your lunch answering questions.

I didn't really mean to ignore it, sorry if it looked that way. I was saying that there is no linear fashion to the process and either way, it can occur for an interview or not 🙂 I am all good here. Thanks for all of your insight again, I have been following it.
