2016-2017 Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a II too! Sent it in 7/8. Does anyone know if the overnight stay with the med student is free or what? That would be a no-brainer if it was, I'm assuming hotels are expensive.

"Please tell us about a situation in which working with others has been challenging. (200 words)"

For this prompt, are they strictly looking for a situation where I had to work in a group and it was challenging?

I want to talk about being an immigrant has made it difficult/challenging to connect with the American kids. Would that be an appropriate answer?

I think that would be fine since ur focusing on adjusting to a new environment with your peers. So working with them is fine if u mainly show how the assimilation was difficult and the impact it had on your future

Just my two cents here... If you're going to do this, it might be best to focus on one particular situation where it was difficult to connect with people.

Yeah definitely that's what I meant, include a powerful anecdotal component and translate that to how it affected you and what you took away from it

Any of you guys get an "Application Complete" email? Submitted late July but letters weren't in until 8/5. On the portal I have "Application File Complete" with a check mark but haven't heard anything else.

Would love it if someone could provide me with a timeline for their file complete vs complete email experience. Thanks!

This one, I did not receive a complete email

Sent in all of my letters via AMCAS last week, but Mt. Sinai's document status says they haven't been received. I'm concerned because it looks like all of my other schools have received them. Wondering if Sinai is just taking longer to update their website. Has anyone else experienced this?

+1, everyone else has marked me as complete but Sinai has yet to register my letters for some reason

Yep, letters still not registered and it's been nearly a week. I hope they haven't run out of II already!

Just gotta be patient my friend, it takes time. Trust me, we all hate the waiting aspect but it's part of the process

What does a professional passion even entail? Are they looking for EC type responses (Ex. tutoring, EMT...etc)?
I'm planing on writing about sports it that makes you feel better! It did say professional OR personal.

My letters got processed 8/23 and they were received by AMCAS 8/15, so it took a little over a week (but felt much longer than that!). Just FYI if anyone wants a loose timeline.

did you guys receive an application complete email when you were complete? i have a check mark next to "Application File Complete" on my sinai status page since the end of July but have not received an email.
wondering if i should email admissions...any help much appreciated.

I received a complete email as soon as I submitted. My letters were already received though when I submitted the secondary.

thank you, looks like i need to send them an email

Let me know the outcome of this - I posted earlier in the thread asking about application complete emails but was told that they do not send an application complete email. @belvita , can you confirm that you received some sort of complete and under review email???? I did get an application received email but never got a complete one.

Hey @s3rr8s, this is the text of the email body I received. The email subject was "Icahn SOM at Mount Sinai MD Application Complete" and it came immediately for me (submit date was very late July a little after midnight).

I also got an "app received" email at the same time. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! My app was finished with letters on the 5th, so I'm thinking of sending an email tomorrow morning just to satisfy my neuroticism

I'm the one who told you that they don't send complete emails, because I never got one. Sorry for giving you incorrect info! I'm anxiously waiting to see what they tell you when you email them.

I received an interview invite and never got an application complete email. I got the "secondary application received" email, which actually said I should get an "application file complete" email, but I didn't worry about it because everything on the portal showed complete, then the next email was the II. So not getting that email definitely doesn't mean they aren't reviewing your app or it's in queue.

That's good info to know, thanks!

Hey no worries! But now I'm not so sure I want to bother them (emails don't affect II decisions, right? lol) after hearing from @Yorick 's response.

I really don't want to unnecessarily harass their support office, but maybe Ill just call and ask if it's normal to be expecting such an email.

This is my first time posting so please forgive any mistakes I make! I am interested in the FlexMed program and would appreciate if you guys could chance me before I dish out $110 to apply:

HS GPA: 4.6
My school didnt calculate unweighted. I graduated 3rd in my class of 600 people.
SAT CR+M: 1430
College GPA: 3.25
I KNOW this is really low but my school has grade deflation and our first semester did not factor into our GPA so I only have my freshman spring to base this off of. If it helps, my school is in the top 5 nationally.

What do you guys think? My extracurriculars are pretty splid and I'm sure my rec letters will be amazing. It's just my college gpa that stinks....

Youre expected to maintain a 3.5 GPA, how will you be able to do this at your school? My school was same exact way (notorious for grade deflation, P/F first semester) Gave up on the FlexMed dream lol

II today! Can't believe it.. Completed secondary 7/19 but my last letter of rec was received end of July. Not sure when I was officially "complete."
congrats! how are you guys going to prepare for the interview?

Is anyone still having trouble having their letters marked as complete by Sinai? Letters received by AMCAS on August 23rd, but still not marked as complete. I want to send an email but don't want to pester them too much.

Hang in there Dr. Charney! Good to know they're both going to be okay!

Is anyone still seeing their letters of rec marked as not received on the portal? I had mine sent in almost two weeks ago and I submitted my app last monday, the 22nd. Every school I applied to has received my letters except Mt. sinai. Should I try contacting them?
