2016-2017 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone can do this. If you log back into the portal you should see the option on the first page.
That's what I thought, I just wanted to make sure cause I read posts earlier from people saying that you couldn't apply till you had already been accepted

I think it's more that you can apply after you've been accepted, but you can also apply now.

I remember reading on their website somewhere that you can fill it out now, but it will not be looked at until after you've been accepted.

Remember there are two types of medical students in NY:

Those accepted to NYU who get to rotate at Bellevue, and everyone else 😉

Yall the 3 year md and residency program is literally the dream. does anyone know what it takes to get into it? all the past forums die out after md acceptances.

"If you have taken any time off from your studies, either during or after college, please describe what you have done during this time and your reasons for doing so."
Is it just me or is this worded confusingly? Like if you've graduated from college how is that taking time off from studies? If I'm currently on a gap year do I answer this?

It is time off from studies because you plan to become an MD, and could have applied during your junior year in college (with only having the traditional summer downtime between studies).

I filled it out with my gap year plans and activities done since graduation, etc.

When they ask about non-academic accomplishments, does this include research? That is, can I talk about my research in this section?

Can someone post the secondary questions for this cycle? Thanks

No. Research is academic.

I was considering my accomplishment as my presentation of my results to a large group of people, overcoming my fear of public speaking. Would that be non-academic enough?

I think if you frame your response with a focus on public speaking, it could work. You don't have to say what the nature of the presentation was (research/academic), only that you over came your fear and how you worked to accomplish that.

2º Question: the first one asks:

"The Admissions Committee uses a holistic approach to evaluate a wide range of student qualities and life experiences that are complementary to demonstrated academic excellence, strong interpersonal skills and leadership potential. What unique qualities or experiences do you possess that would contribute specifically to the NYU School of Medicine community?"

Could I potentially use a challenge essay I wrote for another school's secondary with more of a twist as to how it will increase my future success as a med student / physician??

p.s... NYU is one of my top choices, so I really don't want to screw this up.....
Do you have a diversity essay already prepped? I tweaked mine just a tad to fit their mission. I personally would not use a challenge essay for this prompt

Anyone else not get a secondary email, but get that email about the twitter question and answer thing? I'm wondering if the email just didn't go through; LizzyM >80 here, so I doubt I was screened out..

NYU doesn't screen, so check your spam. All else fails, call the office.

Oh man it's already application time again.

I'm a 3rd year here -- halfway done with rotations.

Reply to this (so I get the little notification) if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them!

Question: Can students apply to NYU Med during their senior year?
I've noticed that on the website, it says that NYU SOM requires completion of undergraduate study and a baccalaureate degree. Does that mean prior to applying or prior to matriculation?
I'm still a junior in college, and I'm not sure if I want to take a gap year or not.

Prior to matriculation. You can apply to start right after you graduate, that's 100% normal.

Thanks! I'm really interested in their 3 year program, because I'm pretty sure I want to pursue dermatology after over 150 hours of shadowing.

Any more thoughts on the "significant fluctuations" prompt? Should I comment on my two Ws? I also have two incompletes that were later resolved -- do I need to comment on those?

Yes:

"This will inform you that we have received all forms and credentials required to complete your application. The Committee on Admissions will notify you as soon as any final action is taken."

I have a check mark next to "application file complete" on my portal, but never received an email. Should I be concerned?

I did not choose to attend NYU, but did interview (and was accepted) early in the cycle here last year. During my interview, the adcom actually told us a bit about how the 3-year program works (I too was very interested in this).

Basically, it seems as though you apply similar to how you apply to medical school, and if you are chosen, you are given the chance to interview with the residency program director. How many slots are available is largely program dependent (for example, we were told that ortho had only 1 slot). Furthermore, to even be chosen, your current profile needed to match that requisite of the chosen residency (for example, we were told that said ortho slot was filled by a student who had already published in academic ortho journals during undergrad).

Less "competitive" positions may not be as stringent in these requirements so long as you project how you came to know which speciality was right for you.
