2016-2017 University Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When do OOS students with recognized connection to Nevada get IIs.
Thanks

While the application deadline has not quite arrived, most II's have already been sent (this includes OOS students with NV connections). There are some factors that invite increased scrutiny and may result in not receiving an interview offer, in spite of a Nevada connection. For example, do not expect an invitation to visit if you have been expelled from another medical school, even if you are a born-and-bred Pahrumpian.

If you are an OOS applicant with a connection to Nevada, and are utterly perplexed as to why you have not received an interview, please contact the admissions office during business hours on December 23 or from December 27-29.

My friends with recognized connections have been slowly receiving their IIS actually. Someone I know is OOS but his primary relatives live in Vegas - he got an II for an early date. Others are UNLV students I am currently in school with, but are from out of state. Some interviewed this month, but those who got theirs a couple weeks ago received IIS for March dates. But these individuals are very accomplished, dedicated, and well written

That being said, I do have OOS friends who are currently students at UNLV (or were born in NV but now reside in a neighboring state) and they have not received IIs. Any school isn't a guaranteed interview invite - schools need to be selective when they spend their time, energy, and resources. The purpose of any public school is usually to create physicians who will serve their state- in the case of Las Vegas, we barely have any physicians despite being such a bustling center.

Well.. if this school doesn't accept me, I hope that there will be a residency spot open for me after I finish medical school.

If we're OOS with no connections to Nevada, there's essentially no chance for an interview invite?

It looks grim this year. We have been able to approach an acceptable number of interview offers without dipping into the pool of OOS applicants that have no connection to Nevada.

While this is of zero comfort right now, in 5+ years we anticipate enlarging the class size and becoming a more typical public medical school, meaning a subset of future OOS/no connection applicants will be admitted.

That's so sad to hear! There are so many cool things going on in Las Vegas that would have made it a great place to learn. But hopefully you guys select wonderful candidates that will service the state well in the upcoming years!

This might be a dumb question but are those of us in the adjacent states to Nevada part of that OOS with no Las Vegas ties group, and it is therefore grim looking for us too?

Nevada resident = good
OOS with Nevada connection = good
Adjacent state without Nevada connection = grim
Non-adjacent state without Nevada connection = DOA

So are calls going out any time between the 26-28th? Or just one specific day? Just wondering if I should be constantly staring at my phone for one day or all three.

I remember writing we were going to be called on the 26th (but very few of us will get in I guess since it's rollingxnon rolling so I didn't think it would take more than 1 day like some other schools) and that we could get the letter any time in that range?

Let's wait for the response of UNLV MED

Yeah I remember them saying there wouldn't be that many for the first round. But I'm sure I'll still be glued to my phone haha

Last I heard the calls would most likely be on the 27th, which is the first business day after the observed holiday. But I make no promises in this regard.

Just checked the calendar again and now it says 12/26-12/30 for first acceptances 😱😱😱

Tell me about it. I've been checking this page a lot too, just to be sure nobody came to brag about their acceptance.
Haha I'd be happy if someone did. Then I could at least know that I can stop obsessively checking my phone

Can I throw out a little info to calm people's nerves? (Hopefully). So I called admissions, and they said that calls did in fact go out but only a limited amount actually got reviewed, so it's entirely possible that even if you interviewed on Day 1, your app did not get screened yet.

good to know! did they say when the next round would be?

Same as the schedule: Last Friday of the next month. I didn't feel like being nosey and ask how many got reviewed, though. If you are really on edge, I would call and ask if you got reviewed.

haha I can hold off for a month at least. I wonder how many acceptances they sent out today though

@Alma1989 Did they say that was it for the week or just the day? I would really like to not constantly check my phone for the next couple of days.

Invited for an interview! Applied as OOS but had a family connection in the area. There is still hope OOS people!

That's a recognized connection 😛

Just saw this posted to UNLV twitter page. I wish UNLV med would shed some light on the accuracy of this number. Makes me nervous to think 20 people have been accepted when they said in the interviews only 8-10 would be.

That's scary... form what I've gathered only people from the first three interview dates have been accepted but that's just based off of people I know so I could be wrong. I really hope they haven't already accepted 1/3 of the class

Isn't that an old article lol? I am pretty sure they've gone through more than the first 3 dates tbh. They said they were behind in reviewing apps at the December interview dates which makes me think they haven't accepted quite that many yet 😛

Do you know anyone who's heard back that interviewed past the first three dates?

Yes actually - one friend who said she was on the 4th date but let me ask her again. That article says by the end of 2016 but it was published at the end of 2016 so I doubt it's accurate!

Gotcha, how many people do you know who received acceptances?

Just wondering if there will be an equal number of acceptance spots available for each interview date in the season
From an earlier post: The process is a hybrid between rolling and non-rolling admissions. Seats will be offered in batches starting next week and continuing into the spring. Not getting offered a seat in the batch that follows your interview does not automatically mean you have been waitlisted or rejected.
