2016-2017 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was verified 7/1 if that helps. It's still quite early, they might just be doing people in batches. My name is also at the beginning of the alphabet if that makes any difference:laugh:

Haha I give up on trying to decode whatever system these UCs use to screen for secondaries :eyebrow:

I was under the impression that UCLA sends a courtesy email telling you if you received a secondary (like every other school does at least). My only notification from them was on 7/1 telling me they received my application and giving me a link to check my status. I naturally checked it that day and saw nothing. I checked my email and spam every day and still nothing. Flashforward to now. Confused by the silence I've been getting from UCLA, I log in to check my status and lo and behold, apparently I received a UCLA PRIME secondary on 6/29 (yikes!).

To summarize: if you're still waiting on a secondary from UCLA, don't count on an email notice. Check your application status daily.

I am visiting a couple medical schools in southern california next week (Mon-Wed), is there any medical student who is willing to give me like a tour of the campus and answer some of my questions? I realized just today that med school admissions are nothing like undergrad admissions where you can schedule group tours anytime you like. So I am requesting if anyone is willing to show me around for part of the day (30 min or so). I can pay you for your time!

Also advice: is visiting med schools before you've received a secondary or interview a good idea at all? I wanted to use my experience to craft my secondary if I get one...but would it be a waste of time?

if we still haven't received a secondary... should we try emailing admissions? It's getting a little late isn't it?

when were you verified? i think if your lizzy M is 70+ and if you've been verified for a while then a polite call to ask an update on your app might be worth a shot

Yeah .. I'm LM 75, verified 6/23, and while all my friends got theirs ASAP I still don't have mine lol

I was employed for the entirety of my undergraduate years, full-time for a year after graduation, again employed during my post-bacc program, and am now employed full-time again while I apply.

How on earth am I supposed to fit all of this, with hours and descriptions, into 800 characters? For real?!?!

It's more than enough. Bullet it as a snapshot. Limit your description to job title and a line or two.

I have five major employment endeavors to list, each requires dates, title, description, and hours worked. I guess my descriptions are going to be very brief and resume style aka not full sentences.

I understand. I have a number of significant employment and that is what has to be done. They need to be limited. Trust that if it's important to the adcom, they can ask about it in an interview. Further, there isn't any job that doesn't have a "typical" duties that can be ascertained by the job title or googled.

Current MS1 here, just wanted to wish everyone good luck on your apps (and soon interviews)! I've just met many of my classmates and the deans at UCLA DGSOM over the past week during the optional preorientation, and have pretty much fallen in love with the school. I hope to see many of you here for interviews and Second Look Weekend!

@MDrocker I don't really think that visiting a school is necessary to write a secondary, especially for schools that don't ask the "Why this school?" question. That said, it couldn't hurt...it's probably more useful for figuring out which schools you want to initially apply to though. If you're conveniently in the area, a visit sure wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't recommend spending the time or money to fly out across the country to see all of them (unless maybe people in your family work for airlines and hotel chains and you get free airfare & housing, and you have nothing better to do with your summer vacation).

I have to warn you that this next week is our orientation week, so I don't know how doable tours will be since me and the other MS1s will pretty much be fully booked from 7am--6 or 8pm. Maybe one of the MS2-4 around this forum might have time, but I believe many of them have pretty busy schedules this week too. But I'd be happy to answer online any basic questions about the school that you have, although keep in mind I'm just a week in myself!

Has anyone reached out to UCLA to see if the admissions office made a mistake or something of that nature in terms of releasing their secondaries? Specifically for the people who were verified in Late June/Early July with solid LizzyM's

I submitted my primary within 15 minutes of AMCAS first opening, in-state, still have not received either🙁

Definitely make sure you are checking in the portal. I was sent a secondary in early July but never got an email from them letting me know after the initial "we got your primary" email. But I checked my status within the portal last week and lo and behold, there it was.

Thank you for the reminder, I have been checking 🙂 still no secondary.. but yeah, that's really unfortunate that they don't send reminder e-mails. And their Charles Drew 2017 portal has not even opened yet...

Secondary +1, verified 7/19

Secondary received just now! LizzyM 77, OOS. Dream school for me! And just when I thought I was done with them...

Just got the secondary. Verified 7/22. LizzyM 75. OOS. I've now gotten secondaries from all the UCs I've applied to except UCSF.

Crossing my fingers for one! Was verified around the same time as you @brigaton.

Did you guys get an email about it or did you just check the portal?

Scratch that. I was actually verified 7/15. I submitted on 6/22 so I mixed the numbers up. All these secondaries are ruining my brain.

You'll probably receive a secondary soonish.

HOW TO RESOLVE APPLICATION SAVING/SUBMISSION ERRORS & ISSUES
Using chrome I was getting this error message while trying to save my responses and submit the app "The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred." On other browsers I simply got an unable to load error page . The issue is the result of double quotation marks if you include them in any responses ["]. In my case, although the characters of each of my prompts responses was less then 800, for some reason double quotation marks ["] count as about 3 characters on the website and though my prompt which included quotations was less than 800 in word, it registered as above 800 on the site which leads to error when trying to submit or save. Simply switching double quotation marks for single quotation marks ['] fixes the issue.

Received secondary yesterday morning!

Verified 6/14 and didn't get one last cycle when I was verified late July. LM ~65, but pretty unique ECs.

Applying earlier definitely helped me IMO!!

For whoever received the supplemental yesterday, can you guys access it ?

Mine's working. Clicked on the link in the email and went to portal page and clicked on Geffen (not PRIME). Don't forget to manually change the year to 2017. They should def change that default.

If we applied for PRIME but no longer wants to apply for it and have already received secondaries, what should we do?

do you guys think i could be screened out for a 3.49 sgpa? overall gpa is 3.64

Email the admissions office. They're responsive and helpful, and switched me back to regular MD.

soooo why won't my secondary save? everything's under 800 characters and it keeps saying "internal error occured"

ETA: nevermind- character issue. annoying bc my characters are fine on word

I looked on their website and could only find a phone number. Do you happen to have their email? Thanks! The more I think about PRIME, the more I think I should probably just apply regular MD.

Also, how did the process work -- Did they immediately revoke your PRIME secondary and you then had to wait to be screened/receive the MD secondary?

Hello All,
I submitted my secondary for MSTP on the 4th and now I'm seeing "Disadvantaged Information" section that I haven't seen before. It's dated 7/11/16, the day I was verified. I didn't see this earlier today. It says UCLA is sending this to me because I have indicated a request for disadvantaged consideration of my medical school application. But the problem is, I didn't. I just checked my application again to confirm that I put "no." Did anyone else get this too? I don't remember seeing anything on the secondary on disadvantaged status. Could someone working on their secondary check and see if there's a question asking if you are disadvantaged or not? I'm wondering if I accidentally checked on something on the secondary. Thank you very much in advance!

You can withdraw it. Or if you want, call their office. Super helpful!

I have this problem too, but I applied for PRIME. I have yet to submit my secondary but received this message recently and have never indicated a disadvantaged status anywhere. Can we just assume this was a mistake and withdraw the request, or should we call and clear it up?

Same problem. What the heck? I did not indicate disadvantaged, but my AMCAS automatically made me a disadvantaged status based on my childhood parental income levels, etc.

Not sure what to do here..
