2016-2017 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From what I've read in previous year's threads and heard from other students, if it wasn't mentioned in the acceptance letter it isn't going to happen later (Geffen).

Leaders of tomorrow is a different story though, as I believe those are awarded later in the cycle.

Thank you! I'll keep my fingers crossed for Leaders of Tomorrow in that case.

That's correct; if I'm not mistaken, all merit-based scholarships are awarded with your initial acceptance. Also, I don't think Geffen scholarships are re-awarded in the same cycle if someone does turn it down. The line you are referring to in your acceptance letter should be talking about need-based aid. Also, all incoming MS1s are awarded a one-time $10k scholarship, which is awesome too 🙂

Thank you! Not going to complain about the 10k either 🙂

Really? It wasn't mentioned on my acceptance letter. is that 10k only for in state ms1?

Hmm, maybe it's changed this year, so I'm just speaking for my own year. In fact, I would say the 10k is more for the OOS students, as the 10k can help cover the difference in tuition and give you time to become a CA resident starting your 2nd year.

Oh did you see that on your acceptance letter? Or they won't mention it until later..?
I haven't been accepted... YET. Lol. But they probably won't mention until later since everyone gets it. But I remember them telling us that everyone gets the $10k to help with costs of moving and stuff

That would make a lot of sense. Did they state the 10k scholarship on your acceptance letter do you remember?

I vaguely remember it too. Hey, good luck!

im pretty sure they did, but maybe they changed the notification process this year. you can definitely call up financial aid to ask for this clarification or ask during second look as well!

I think there are 3-4 interview days left, so I would imagine that any invites that go out now are to fill up cancellations, but not sure! We are currently interviewing thru the 3rd week of March.
Thank you hero!

Based on what I was told on my interview day, it seems likely the ad comm will meet tomorrow...hopefully that means acceptances for some people on here!

Yes, they will meet this wednesday and release decisions sometime next week, likely Tuesday, possibly Thursday, but that would mean they miss the AMCAS deadline.

Does anyone know if the MD/PhD is separate class size than the 133?

After you get all your fafsa related stuff together they send you an email with an estimat. I got ~10K.

Does anyone remember if UCLA said that anyone accepted before April 31st is considered for the geffen? Or is the date March 15th? I remember April 31st but I just wanted to confirm. Thanks!

I didn't hear specifically about those dates, but I thought you were awarded the Geffen (or not) upon acceptance

Pretty sure it was March 15, but now that you said that I'm uncertain

Does anyone have an idea how need-based aid looks like without the Geffen Scholar? i.e. for very low-income students?

I thought they said some day in April during my interview day.

This is all of our lives every morning, hahahahah..... ha ...ha.... 🙁
Good luck everyone, stay frosty.

Praying for acceptances tomorrow for all of us. 1 like = 1 prayer.

But they'd likely release those next week, right? Since we'd need to go to the scholarship committee after these theoretical acceptances? Still not 100% clear on the timeline of it all.

Yea, I'm thinking it'll be next week. Acceptances seem to go out every two weeks

Keep our fingers crossed! And toes! And arms and legs!

i really hope theres a wave next week. i hope last week wasn't the last one 🙁 but as someone who interviewed in september, it might be over for me already anyways

Still no decision post-secondary for me. C'mon and reject me already!

Lol, I feel ya my friend! I submitted 20 secondaries and UCLA is the only school whom I've heard absolutely nothing from post-secondary. Now, I'm just looking for closure!

Congrats to all those that interviewed though and hope you all have some good news coming your way!

I qualified for need based. You'll get a little more than the 10K scholarship and the rest was federal loans at ~ 5.3% which is prettt darn good considering private loans are 7-8% interest (Highway robbery I tell ya!). You may also get some grad plus (6.3%)thrown in the mix but it's predominantly federal.

To the "Subsidizes out of state fees" portion you mentioned earlier. I am in state and still was lucky enough to snag that 10K. Pure speculation here but I'm thinking everyone will get atleast 10K. Once again pure speculation lol.

hmm was it mostly loans? i heard very low income students get full tuition paid for?

Mine was, perhaps my parents combined income wasn't low enough. So take what I said with a grain of salt.

Qualifying for need-based aid and being Low SES are two entirely different things so yeah that probably is the case here. It is highly likely that most students will qualify for need-based aid because most parents do not have 250k+ in the bank of disposable income to spend on a medical education.

I doubt this is considered similar to students whose parental income is below the poverty line though.

How are these two things entirely different? just curious

Hypothetically, your parents could be making 75,000 dollars a year+ and you could still qualify for need-based aid because that would not provide enough for your parents to pay for your education in its entirety.

Loans are still considered need-based aid.

This is entirely different from a low SES applicant whose parental income could be less than 30,000 dollars per year and therefore likely to be below the federally established poverty line, not to mention other factors such as parental education, professional occupation, or rural vs. urban upbringing that factor into SES.

So in the case of need-based scholarships/grants, I think the criteria is different than for need-based loans which is much more common but tbh I do not really know I've looked these things up many times and there are not 100% concrete answers on the topic.

Edit: guy who initially asked the question stated low-income as the only qualifying factor but I do not know if other SES factors will definitely make the allocation of grants/scholarships any more likely but I assume it does, likewise take my info with a grain of salt.
