2016-2017 University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
According to the threads from the last two years, decisions didn't go out at all after the meeting during first week of March - tons went out the week after (which would be next week)

Good observation.

Yeah, it looks like for the past several years they didn't send out any correspondence except for rejections at the end of February and beginning of March.
Yay a whole other week of waiting. I wonder if they will meet next week.

Haven't heard back since early December... just really want to know

Interviewed first week of February and feel like I missed the boat lol. Also, wouldn't the next meeting be in another two weeks, before 2nd look weekend as stated previously? I'm sorry if my unhelpful speculations are unhelpful

That would be really close to second look weekend. Idk how people would be expected to arrange travel that quickly.

Anyone have any recommendations for housing? Or is there a better place to ask?

If you're in, I would try the accepted students page. Housing is really tough to find in Chapel Hill honestly, and most of the good places are booked in October (I went here undergrad). Housing is going to be annoying to find if I'm lucky enough to get in. You'll probably wind up with a house or a less popular apartment complex. If you don't mind riding the bus, it's no big deal. But there is 0 parking on campus so the places closest/walking distance to school are in high demand and may be booked already lol.

I hate saying this, but it's possible that decisions did go out this week, but weren't reported here. This year, there's only been, what, ~20 reported acceptances so far? So if we're being conservative, there should be at least about 5x that many acceptances. The vast majority of acceptances go unreported (or they are just much wiser than we and stay off this site altogether). Thoughts?

I'll definitely check that out. I'm actually looking to live a bit east, as I'll be rooming with a friend who works in Morrisville. They have park and ride correct? I was hoping to do that, if that's an available option.

Maybe, but I think it's likely that they didn't meet this week or they will be meeting later this week/early next week because today was the last day of interviews. I feel like it would make more sense from a logistical standpoint to wait until the last interview is finished and then meet so the last group of interviewees can be included in the review. Purely speculation at this point though.

2 people were added to the accepted student FB page on Monday, but none since then. There are a little over 100 people on the page total. Interpret that as you will haha...assuming most of the people accepted have FB accounts.

Why do y'all think they won't meet during spring break? I don't think spring break affects them, it's usually just an undergraduate thing at UNC and most of them are practicing physicians who will have to go to work. I think we'll hear something next week

I wonder how quickly they invite you to the FB page after giving you an acceptance....

I would look at the accepted student facebook page as there will probably be people looking for roommates. I am a current med student here and honestly, if you can't find anything walking distance to campus it's totally fine. The bus system is amazing- just make sure you get a place near a bus line, which isn't difficult to come by. I live in Carrboro because it's way more relaxing and quiet and I can hop on the bus and get to campus in 15 minutes. The buses are free and everyone uses them as there is no parking on campus, so it's super efficient. Lots of people live in Southern Village or Meadowmont and ride the bus. Those aparmtents are a bit pricey, but nice. You can also check craig's list for houses in the area and there are numerous town homes/apartment complexes/houses in Carrboro. There is also park and ride if you go to the Chapel Hill Transit page- Park and Ride it will give you more info.

speaking of UNC, does anyone have a good theory as to why they didn't meet? My thought was waiting until interviews were completely over so they could evaluate everyone, and then sending out decisions next week in a "pre-second look, pre AAMC" deadline kind of thing, but I never know how valid my neurotic thoughts are.

That's my theory too. There were only two interview dates left (Monday and Wednesday of this week) and they wanted it get all of the interviews over with before doing a review.

Are you thinking they'll send out some more acceptances next week so people have time to make travel plans before second look? I think that would make sense. But then again spring break is next week and they may not meet...

I think they'll meet. Like somebody said, it's undergrad spring break and it's only spring break for MS1s. MS2s are studying for step, MS3s don't have spring break and MS4s are waiting for match next week.

I also don't think the admissions committee cares that much about giving us time to travel for second look. With a 77% offer-acceptance rate, getting people to come to UNC is not the problem they have 🙂

Also the school matriculates like 80% IS students so it's not like they're super worried about people trying to book flights and stuff

Are we sure that they didn't meet? Didn't someone say that they did meet and it just happened that none of the few people here got notified? Idk

I don't remember seeing that. Usually SDN is good for at least one acceptance at the very least.

Alright, sounds good, thank you @tarheelpenner
Btw do you know how the admissions committee works?
It's your admissions committee member plus notes from your other interviewee... and then others who have just read your application? Is that it?

That's what I know about it. My feeling is your adcom member is really the one who advocates for you though.

Don't forget this is all speculation here.

Do they give post II rejections?
Last year they sent most (all?) post-interview rejections the first week of April. At least that's when I got mine as well as a bunch of people on here. That's also around when some were moved from active consideration or whatever they call it to the official wait list. One person then posted on SDN they were accepted off the wait list at the end of May.

I applied last year and I remember them skipping a week towards the end of the interview season. Maybe they do that, so during the last committee meeting they can look at everyone altogether.

Anyways, I'm hoping to see some acceptances going out this week! According to AMCAS, schools are supposed to accept enough applicants to fill the class size by March 15th. I don't think UNC is filled yet as @BreakfastLover said their Facebook page has around 100 people. Let's keep our fingers crossed and chins up!! (and phones ready)... btw I got a call last week from the Alumni association asking for my future plans... thought it was the med school lol

I wish UNC did the same sort of update that ECU provides. It is nice knowing how many acceptances have been offered by a certain date!

I work long hours over the next two days - do you think they would leave a voice message or should I call back or wait for a portal update or do I forfeit my spot immediately lol

I've seen people reporting of voicemails left but sometimes nothing at all.

You're right though, if you don't pick up you immediately get the axe!

Kidding of course, I've seen some people get an acceptance without a call at all. Don't worry about not picking up, surely they don't hinge your entire application based on whether or not you heard the phone ring 🙂

Last year on this day acceptance calls went out starting around 6 pm. Of course they won't necessarily do the same thing this year.

Losing hope rapidly as an early December interviewee but I suppose it ain't over 'till it's over 🙂

Maybe they skipped this week too and are focusing on Black Monday/Match Day lol
