Secondaries! (Which are already released and able to submit). Both are 3500 character limits. @WedgeDawg @Ismet

how many of those following interests do you think it's typical to check and expand upon? if i'm legitimately interested in 3 of them would that be considered too much? are there any of these activities that preclude others on the list in the eyes of the adcom? for example if you are interested in teaching and research, would that make establishing a medical practice in an underserved area unfeasible in the eyes of the adcom (like in terms of responsibilities you will have, time, etc). or is this more all the things that you are interested in doing but are well aware that perhaps you will actually end up doing just one or two?

Texan schools are so early!

Are the secondaries the same for MD and MD-PhD programs?

I did research, underserved, and primary. I don't think it is unfeasible. Urban Dallas you can practice in an underserved area and still research. They know that you can have different interests.

ok thank you!

Is there any email or website that says that your application has been received? I submitted the secondary on the website, but I have no confirmation they got my primary.

You should receive an automated email after submitting the secondary. The confirmation email comes late depending on when they process the primary/secondary app.

I'm of the opinion that you just answer it honestly. For me, I looked at that list and I couldn't honestly say that I was super interested in any of them, so I just left it blank. If you're legitimately interested in 3 of them, I say go for it!

I selected 3 last year and got in. I'd say only select each one if you genuinely are interested AND have activities to back up your interest with.

I feel like this is one of those things where you HAVE to click underserved and primary care...

N=1, didn't click either, prematched in November. They give some interviews to people who haven't even completed the secondary (though you would need it completed by the interview time). Don't overthink it, write what you're actually interested in.

Received the confirmation email today The app review has begun!

Received an Under Review email! 😱

Southwestern IIs last year came out around 8/25 if I am not mistaken. Their first interview dates were a bit late than normal, starting around 9/18 although some were interviewed on 9/11.

I just went through my old emails, I didn't get anything from UTSW between the time they said they received my primary and secondary (2 separate emails in June/July), and the time they invited me to interview (September 3rd invite for an October 10th interview).
So sit tight guys, it's probably going to be a long summer!

So I submitted 5/25, but was complete with mcat on 6/14. That was when I got an email saying they got my app and that the review process has begun. Note: there is no subject in the email and the sender just says "admissions" so look carefully.

Good luck everyone! It's a long process, but definitely worth it.

Question on the Secondary,

If you picked more than one interest, did you write a "setting in which you envision" for each of those interests? That's where my head is going, because wouldn't choosing more than one interest but then only "envisioning" a particular setting negate?

i.e.
1) interested in underserved, teaching, primary care
2)
*each setting for my interests* My ideal practice would... My ideal career in teaching... My ideal career in primary care...
or
*combination for all my interests* Practicing in this type of setting would allow me to own a practice, teach, and be a pcp...

I found an example online that I thought was pretty helpful. I think he selected research, teaching, and primary care, and he combined it all into a single essay that outlined why he had those interests, how his past experiences support those interests, and how he would practically be able to do research, primary care, and teaching in the future.

The prompt says to list in a bulleted format and to not use paragraphs though. Did anyone write an essay for the first prompt? And did anyone get close to the 3500 character limit with just bullet points? Props if you did.

Oh my mistake I thought when he listed "2)" he referred to the 2nd paragraph but I stand corrected. I only used bullets. I didn't add descriptions to my activity names though. I read past UTSW threads and there was a mix of opinions on whether or not to elaborate each bullet point

I did a combination of repeating but expanding on some of the descriptions that i already had for these activities in tmdsas (bc I couldn't include a lot of info I wanted in the tmdsas descriptions due to the 300 character limit) and explaining the relevance of the activity for the first part. However, I focused more on the relevance of each activity in my essay...

Interview dates for this cycle folks...

Saturday interview dates for the 2017 entering class are:

  • August 27
  • September 10, 17
  • October 1, 15, 22, 29
  • November 5, 12, 19
  • December 3, 10
  • January 7, 14
Do you know around when they start giving out II's?

UTSW tends to give out II later than other TX schools. Last year I think the first on SDN was august 24th or so. Seems that it would have to be earlier this cycle considering they have an interview date set for the 27th of August.

Hmm, where did you find the example? Would you mind sending me a link to it? Thank you!

"Interview invitations are sent by email to applicants beginning in mid-July. Normally, invitations for interviews are sent at least three weeks before the assigned interview date."

Above is from the same page with the interview dates. So latest the first invites would go out would be August 6th I'm guessing...

Yeah, last year was really late but I think that may have been due to it being the first cycle ppl were applying with the new mcat and UTSW trying to figure the scores out...just a guess though lol

When you enter in your coursework for the pre-reqs, if our school uses credits (1 credit = 4 semester hours) on our transcript, do we just put "1" instead of "4"? Not sure what to do.

Nvm: Called admissions, they said to just put 1 if that's what's on the transcript and they'll convert it!

Recieved confirmation email today. Didnt realize they were not by invite. I feel like I am not competitive at all, will apply anyways. Not sure exactly how "holistic" this school is looking at their entrance statistics and class profile. I do see their class GPA lowest was a 3.1 and MCAT was 26; but that does not really mean anything without context.

From what I've read here about Southwestern and Dell, the interviews are usually scheduled depending on the GPA and MCAT. But then again, we also see some exceptions every year.

So when I try to enter my TMDSAS ID into the secondary portal, I am being told to please enter a valid number.... I already received the email stating they got my application too. WTF is this lol

edit: tried using firefox and it worked. GG google chrome

Southwestern, give out the IIs already! What else do you want from us 😛

I heard utsw is more oos friendly than most other texas schools. is it on par with baylor (which is still a long shot OOS)?

Texas law prohibits the public med schools to give more than 10% of seats to OOS students. So Baylor being a private school will technically be more OOS friendly than Southwestern.
