2016-2017 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What do we put in the fb search bar to find it? I've tried everything but I can only find class of 2019,2020,ect

I'm a high scorer ORM and did not prematch.
They are probably not sure if UTSW would be your first choice. They want to maximize their yield, so they do consider the chances that someone might choose Baylor or Ivy over them. So, they wait to see what happens and offer them seats later.

Me too. I called IT and they said I don't have an account. I think someone put something in wrong somewhere. I sent an email asking about this and will let you know what I find out.
Same. Still, I am happy just to get the email and start the school process!!

I was able to log onto the website today. I checked around and there is not much on mine except for the transcript send in as a to do item. The scholarship information on my acceptance letter was not in the financial aid section, but I bet it is because it is very early in the process. I did log on using my school computer, which is windows, and I will try again tonight using my mac; my iPad will not even load the page.

Oh yeah the website stuff won't be super useful until later, just wait for it, your scholarship will show up on there eventually. Tuition isn't due until the first week of school anyway which is in a long time. However pro tip since y'all got in early: take advantage of it and get your vaccines taken care of as soon as you can, it can be a bit of a struggle sometimes.

Thanks! Will do!

I was able to log on with my macbook air using chrome.

Any word on merit scholarships? Received letter, did not have any notification in this initial acceptance letter.....

Mine was in my letter. Second paragraph. Maybe they give out more later with financial aid packages?

Got FA complete email today. So it looks like our award notifications will be sent mid spring. Do you guys know if that means we will get our money by then? That sounds kinda soon (not that Im complaining)

Financial aid money comes in late July I think.

I've been reading over this thread and last years thread since my interview on 12/2/16 and 12/3/16. I am extremely excited after my interview because wow... this school is truly amazing. I was blown away.

I am writing thank you e-mails now (not letters as I spoke with a few people and it seems they prefer e-mails anyway). Should I put in any sort of letter of intent in there? Would it be appropriate/helpful if I put something at the end of the thank you like "I can now say with 100% certainty that UTSW meets all my top priorities and I would accept an offer."? I read here the numbers are something like 380 offers but only the 230 students accept. It seems to me with that many people turning it down it may be helpful to say you would accept it in a heartbeat.

Any thoughts?

Interview date: 12/2/16 and 12/3/16
MCAT: 96th percentile (517)
GPA: 3.8
LizzyM: 72.8

P.S. I also saw that a majority of pre-matches that go out are on November 15th and then a lot go out around December 11th (based on last years thread). Does anyone think this late of an interview hurts me and what my chances are with these sort of stats? (Caucasian male)

I think it should simply state your thanks. These faculty members gave up a Saturday that was perfect sleeping-in weather to interview you. I was at the same interview day you were and from all of our presentations it seems like they know UTSW is the top choice for the overwhelming majority of us anyway.

How do you know they don't want physical thank you letters?

At the end I went to thank Anne McLane for all the hard work they put into the interview. The student in front of me asked where to address their thank you letters to. She said the office of admissions is fine but e-mails directly to the people your thanking is easier for everyone. Made sense to me, I didn't ask anything deeper.

I don't think physical letters are bad but I honestly don't know if thank you letters hardly matter at all since they're pretty much just standard formalities these days.

I sort of thought this too before I saw 380 offers are given in order to fill the 230 spots. I would of thought hardly no one would reject this school. But I guess I didn't consider those with the scores to be competitive at UTSW also can be competitive at top national schools.

But you're definitely right that they definitely deserve our thanks not just for the amazing interview experience they set up (far more effort than I saw elsewhere) but also because it wasn't the best of weather conditions for coming out on a weekend.

I don't think it would hurt but I also don't know if it would help. The general consensus on SDN last year was that schools disregard such statements since we are all neurotic premeds who lie. That being said I loved UTSW, it was my favorite school, and I sent in a (slightly desperate) letter of intent.
So basically do whatever you think is best for you 🙂

Emails are much easier to forward/attach to your file I think. When I sent in my desperate letter of intent last year, I got an email confirming it was added to my file. I never got confirmation that my handwritten thank you notes were received.

Your stats are great. Did you apply late? or are you out of state?

Hey all!

It looks like once you send back the acceptance for some more options pop up on mygateway website; like MS0 day and some breakfast thing.

I did not apply late and I'm from Texas. I applied about 2 weeks after the application came out. Honestly, I think my stats are pretty normal for most UTSW acceptees right? Seems everyone who got pre-matches already had LizzyM's well above my 72.8. However, I hear a lot of the students get in off the waitlist and a lot of the pre-match are very high scoring students who end up going to top national schools instead.

P.S. the 3.8 GPA comes from UT Austin with a non-science major and 60+ extra hours of pre-med classes taken and still graduating in 4 years. I feel like that's something they would notice and find impressive.

I just realized how many of my friends double majored and still graduated in 4 years and I'm like woah haha. Doesn't everyone complete the pre-med classes along with their major if it's a non-science major though?

No. They probably take some of the bio and basic sciences but not everyone has to take genetics, organic chemistry, upper division biology classes, and they surely don't have to do all the labs.

Oh haha all of the pre-meds I know took all of the upper bio sequences before the MCAT. Maybe it varies from school to school.

I think that a 517 on MCAT is impressive regardless of major, but especially impressive for a non-science major, and yes, I also think that most of their typical matriculants do come out off the waitlist for the reason you stated.

Has anyone heard anything about a second batch of prematches?

I was wondering the same thing, since last year a second batch seemed to come out on the second Friday in December around 5:30 CT. But I think that idontknowwhatnametopick has a good point

Agreed. Last year it seemed to be December 11th. This is a good point. It probably coincided with the last interview group of the month. Hopefully next week then!

Hey all- interviewed 11/12, checked the TMDSAS portal this morning and it showed up under the schools that have extended prematch offers. Same thing happened to me at utmb and I received official email few hours later. Anyone else seeing this?
Oh wow, congrats!!!!!! I hope this means good news for you. In my case, I didn't see them on my list. I guess I didn't prematch with my dream school. Time to wait I guess.

It seems like it's probably safe to say you got in? In which case congratulations 🙂

I interviewed early September and my portal changed to show that UTSW extended a prematch offer as well. I hope this means good news I haven't received an email or any correspondence yet. Let me know when you get any official utsw email?
