2016-2017 University of Vermont Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you know if they also accept letters of intent/interest pre-interview at that same email address??
I think that the consensus is that there is no benefit to sending letters of intent pre-II, regardless of the school

Just education side:
-Lectures are not mandatory. Seems pretty accommodating to people with odd schedules, especially parents.
-Checks in with you if you're falling behind on exams and offers free tutoring services. If you're good, you can tutor for the school. Pays $20+/hr.
-Gives you all the equipment you need.
-Integrated Curriculum covers preclinicals in 1.5 years, but current students say they felt they had more than enough time to prepare for STEP 1. One fourth year talked about how she felt overprepared for the exam (I'm assuming she did well).
-Clinical experience out the wazoo. Starting from first year. I mean, the Fletcher Allen hospital is literally a small stroll away from the education building. . . .
-Pretty diverse community in Burlington, though everywhere else is homogenously white. Well assimilated refugee populations as well. So you'll have quite the diversity of patients to work with.
-There's a pretty big sim lab, but I didn't get to see much unfortunately. Doors were locked.
-Faculty are like the mom and pops you never knew you needed. Very accommodating to mentoring/guiding students who need them.

Environment of school:
-Tons of non-trads. Listened to accounts of some parents on interview day, and they seemed happy.
-Accommodating of all forms of diversity. LGBT friendly, faculty with rainbow badges. If you're religious and object to contraception/abortion, you can opt out. Students and faculty embrace each other and their differences it seems.
-Schools with one of the highest student satisfaction, located in Vermont which is one of the happiest, healthiest states to live in.
-They have a wellness committee that is serious about making sure students are both physically, mentally, and emotionally taken care. Outdoorsy students have found the time to hike, swim, mountain climb, work-out a lot within the efficient school curriculum. Offers mindfulness/yoga exercises if that's your thing.

Not sure what else to tell you. You'll be happy, comfortable, and well prepared for residency. It's all I can say.

While this is mostly true, keep in mind that they are transitioning to fewer (with the goal of zero) lectures for the upcoming class which means that more learning activities will be mandatory. Team based learning, small groups, flipped classrooms, and other sessions are not podcasted and are counted towards the course grade and professionalism score, so choosing to attend this school with the mindset that you don't need to be at school during scheduled times is not 100% accurate. A couple other notes...while the equipment is given to students, it is definitely reflected in the tuition cost and fees (so don't think that it is truly "given" to you), and the hospital is actually called the University of Vermont Medical Center (previously Fletcher Allen). Just some small details, but otherwise this post is pretty well representative of how it is at the now Larner College of Medicine at UVM 🙂

According to last year's thread January was pretty much the last month for interviews 🙁

Personally I don't understand how they could already be full. And if so, why they don't change their primary/secondary application deadlines to reflect the fact that they fill up so quickly and don't do interviews past Jan.

Thanks for the clarification. It means the student tour guides did a pretty good job then. : P

"Our interview season begins in August and continues through March."

Jan was the last month reported here within the last couple years for an interview invite. But since people's applications weren't mass rejected until around end of February, it's reasonable to suspect that interview invites can still be given out in trickles during February. Last interview date is stated to continue "through March".

Are you sure?

Their website states:
"Our interview season begins in August and continues through March. Our interview days are by invitation only and are scheduled on some week days and Saturdays. "

And I checked the previous thread and the last II date appears to be Feb 22nd. It's not over yet for those of you waiting.

Thanks @Holmwood and @infinityavenue for the positive replies. Haven't gotten a single interview thus far and this application cycle has had me preparing for the worst :/

Does anyone know what kind of laptops they provide for students?

I remember the student who led my tour had said they were given surface tablets to work on.

Not sure where I remember this, but I thought UVM students were given a laptop priced ~3k but had repairs/service free of charge as long as they were students. Maybe we'll get a surface tablet included with tuition this time? 😕

Joined the pool earlier today! Complete 9/25
Congrats! Anyone know how they are doing this? I submitted my secondary on 8/8 and haven't had anything other than
"Your supplemental application has been received. Please note that it may take 6-8 weeks for all materials to be processed; at certain times of the year, it may take as many as 10-12 weeks. You should continue to periodically check on the status of your file through the Online Applicant Center. We appreciate your patience!"
since then.... is that a bad sign?

I've had the same for going on 15 weeks!

Guessing our applications are headed for a better place. Same place my parents told me my pet hamster went as a child... a happy farm with rainbows and a hammock made of dreams

No news is good news! There is still time, they interview til mid-March according to the status update I have. I wouldn't have even known that I was pooled, if I wasn't checking the OAC like a mad person. Hopefully, you join the pool soon!

THANK YOU!! And Congrats to everyone else who has been (and will be!) accepted!

I interviewed on 10/19.

Oh wow. That's crazy. I interviewed a few days earlier, hopefully I'll get some good news soon. Haven't seen like anyone from October get a decision yet until you, so they must have really liked you. Congrats again!

So looks like some people from the 9/24 and 10/19 date received decisions today. Possibly 10/15 as well.
Not sure if everyone from the 9/24 date recieved decisions already, but it looks like 10/15 and 10/19 people will be reviewed simultaneously.

Hopefully for those still waiting there will be an early thanksgiving next week... 🙂

Anyone know why people from the same interview day hear at different times? Do they take the ones they liked better earlier and then move on to the others? Or is it random? Alphabetical?

Congrats!
Thank you!! 🙂

A number of schools where I applied explained that part of the difference in timing depends on a few factors. This can include:
  • How quickly (or slowly) your interviewers write up/process/submit their notes
  • How many applications are processed at each admissions committee meeting (ie, if they can only process 15 per meeting but they have 30 in queue, it'll take at least two admissions meetings to go through all 30)
  • How they approach filling a class (ie, whether they want more non-traditional students/tuba-players/non-science majors)
  • And surely a plethora of other factors...
Sometimes it's a completely linear process where students are notified in order of interview dates but it seems like all too often it's not quite so straightforward.

Stay strong and best of luck! Hopefully you'll hear good news soon! 🙂

Thank you!! 🙂

Thank you for the reply. The only things that concern me are that it is MMI and that they accepted people that interviewed after me but there is still hope!
