Hello Guys!!

First year med student here!!!

I can try to help 😀
Hello and thank you for being willing to help!

Could you shed some light on the committee process? People here are getting accepted from different dates, but is that to do with their individual ranking, the speed of the interviewers' reports, or some other factors?

I'm in the same boat as you (and interviewed the same day as you I believe) and looked back at last year's thread and it seemed random. People from the same interview date were being accepted weeks apart, and even weeks after people who interviewed after them. So I'm not sure, but I think we'll be fine. Most people took a month back to hear, so the people who interviewed on the 15th or 19th and have heard back seem to be exceptions rather than the norm

Yeah I guess I was more curious as to the specifics. I'm not worried, just curious

That's a loaded question, besides the committee itself, I don't think anyone can shed a light on how they work. Basically, after your interview, the committee meets on a specific date and talk about each student that was interviewed that day. On that moment, I believe, they only talk about your responses to the MMI, because they already liked your application. If they decide they must have you, they offer an acceptance. If they like you but aren't sure if your beliefs align with their own, they might hold onto your application for a little bit longer before deciding.

In my class I have a couple of classmates that were accepted very soon after interview, I wast wait-listed first and then got an acceptance later... UVM has quite a different curriculum and we are currently on a pilot program on our first semester so I think they might be looking for a specific type of student ( just a guess though). If you really want to come here and haven't heard from it yet, send a letter of intent expressing how much it would mean, what you love about the school and what you have accomplished since the interview.

hope this helps a little?

How friendly is this school to OOS?

Very friendly. I think maybe 1/3 of our current class is from VT, the rest from all over. There are a lot of non-traditional students as well.

Thank you. I ended up looking at MSAR, and yeah, it seems pretty friendly to OOS with those ratios. I have been tricked before because I think some schools that have a decent amount of OOS matriculations must have been students that could show ties to the states.

That's a loaded question
Thanks for the response! Definitely helps, for sure.

Although I don't really think it fits the definition of a loaded question. A loaded question pigeonholes you into responses that are bad; "when did you stop beating your spouse"-type things. There'd be nothing negative about responding "no I can't shed any light" to my question.

Those darn counfounding variables!

Do they like this? This school is def my top choice and I interviewed a little bit over 3 weeks ago

I don't see why not... I sent one after the interview, and then after being waitlisted I thanked them for continuing to consider me for acceptance, and then included updates of what I have been doing since then...

it won't hurt you

I would wait if it's your top choice. 3 weeks isn't a long time at all.... it's better to use a letter of interest/intent if you get on the waitlist as a way to get out!

Thank you!! 🙂

A number of schools where I applied explained that part of the difference in timing depends on a few factors. This can include:
  • How quickly (or slowly) your interviewers write up/process/submit their notes
  • How many applications are processed at each admissions committee meeting (ie, if they can only process 15 per meeting but they have 30 in queue, it'll take at least two admissions meetings to go through all 30)
  • How they approach filling a class (ie, whether they want more non-traditional students/tuba-players/non-science majors)
  • And surely a plethora of other factors...
Sometimes it's a completely linear process where students are notified in order of interview dates but it seems like all too often it's not quite so straightforward.

Stay strong and best of luck! Hopefully you'll hear good news soon! 🙂
i knew i shouldve played tuba in high school

They have that AAMC meeting thing from Nov 11-15. I'm not sure if UVM participates, but I thought maybe after the 15th.
What meeting is this? Does this mean that decisions and interview invites and likely to not be going out until the 15th for any school?

Mmm, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Some schools sent out decisions on the weekends and holidays after all.

I thought maybe this meeting might cause a delay. It's speculation, so don't mind me too much.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully we will hear by the end of this week. Last year some decisions went out on Thursday of this week

Confirmed premed.

Anybody have any information at all about the IS waitlist? Movement, numbers, what it means, etc...

No, but there are stats for waitlist in the msar.
No on waitlist : 150-200
People who get off: ~20

And acceptance stats:
No of IS applicants: 76
No of IS applicants interviewed: 70
Matriculants: 37
When'd you get waitlisted btw?

---
It'd be interesting to know: has anyone been placed in the pool and then taken out?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile
You mean "unpooled"? I don't think I've heard of such things. Is that what happened to you?

Yeah I saw those stats. I was just hoping for more info on the IS waitlist specifically, such as how many IS applicants they pull off the waitlist, or how many actually get waitlisted each year.

I interviewed 9/24 and was waitlisted 10/24. I guess I would just like to know what my chances of being accepted are compared to an OOS applicant also on the waitlist.

As of today, I finally get to grab my floaties and join the pool! My fault for submitting late... Complete 10/5.
Making me sweat over here! I was complete a lot earlier than that... still crossing my fingers! 🙂🙂

Spoke too soon... me and my boogie board will be chilling over here

Does the small pool actually mean anything? I thought everyone was put in the small pool if they didn't get an interview yet?

No it doesn't. It also doesn't say small pool it just says pool!

I don't know what you're talking about... Definitely doesn't just say "pool" for me!

Just to quell the pool talk. I'm a re-applicant. Was not pooled last year and rejected. I have been pooled this year, since august. It is definitely a good thing, but the pool is probably huge. It most likely functions as a preliminary review.

I expect a batch of decisions will come out either today or tomorrow

What makes you think that?

They are almost always released Thursday or Friday. And the spacing of the decisions in the past would indicate this week, as next week is Thanksgiving and I don't they will wait 2 weeks. I'm just guessing of course and they could switch it up this year

When did you guys interview?
