2016-2017 University of Vermont Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We do have a student host program. Usually, there should be a link in the interview invite to sign up for the host program, but I am not sure if that is true for this year.

And definitely save money where you can!
There wasn't a student host list in my II email :/ but I'll email the the admissions office anyway just in case. Thanks for the info!

I found the student host link. It was in the Accommodations page of the admissions website and I guess I just missed it when I browsed it the first time around... 😳 Hopefully there are still student hosts available for my date!

Just FYI for those of you interviewing on 8/27 like me: It's move-in weekend for UVM and a bunch of the other colleges in Burlington, so hotel rooms are sparse. Keep that in mind if you're waiting to book a room.

I know UVM does MMIs, but does anyone know if any of the stations just simply talk about your experiences and whatnot? Basically, do you ever meet with someone to talk about your application (research, experiences, etc.)?

I'm starting to feel like this small pool business is more like a hold 😕
It's not promising. Looking at previous year's threads, people receive II's without ever being small pooled. Although applicants in the small pool can receive interview invites later on in the cycle, and given the small class size, I wouldn't hold my breath. A buddy of mine was small pooled with a sub 500 MCAT last year (OOS, non-URM)...so it's definitely not a sign that you are 'desirable'. At least you have movement, however. I am still undergoing processing.

Idk guys, I was small pooled and am interviewing 8/27. I doubt they would have put me on "hold" and taken me off within like 2 weeks.

That's super promising! Thank you!

Congrats!!! Is it possible that you were small pooled simply because they had not extended any II's yet (given that you are interviewing so early)?Anyhow...that's great news.

Best of luck at your interview!

If so, that has to be the stupidest wording for an "on hold' status.

I was small pooled and got an II. I think it literally means what it says , that you have a good chance of getting one

sooooo I know I am a little late to the party but I just submitted my secondary to UVM. I submitted my payment and application but no change was made to the portal. I also did not receive any sort of email confirmation of payment. Is this normal?

Small pooled! Hoping not to drown here.

Small pooled - anyone know what the chances of an interview are? I'm OOS but would actually love to go here!

Do you feel like maybe that question was already answered in this thread, most likely multiple times?

The answers is no one really knows, there is some anecdotal and sdn compiled numbers that may or may not mean anything, and we should all just be patient because whatever happens, happens.

And just cause I'm in an extra grump mood, what really grinds my gears is when people talk about "I really want to go there". Isn't that already assumed because you applied, or are people applying to schools, paying $45 + $100 or more, to places they don't actually want to go - and are expecting to bull**** adcoms into believing they want to go there?

/rant haha

wow, that was definitely the grumpiest message I've read in a while. I get it - everyone has those days, and I hope your day or week or month gets better from here on out.

but that anxiety, uncertainty, and vulnerability manifests differently in each person, and some people might reach out on here to ask questions no one really has answers to just as a discussion point. and I think that's part of the great support system sdn offers (despite its many chances of feeding neuroticism). it's nice to know we're not alone, that this struggle is shared and that there is hope for that light at the end of the tunnel.

/end somewhat idealistic existential tidbit

so anyway, keep keep chugging everyone; it's still quite early in this cycle. 🙂

Yeah, but it has been discussed, multiple times, in this thread. :beat: :beat: :beat:

What it says:

"Your file is complete and has been preliminarily reviewed. You are within a pool of applicants from which an interview may be extended. Please note that this does not guarantee you will be offered an interview and you may not see an update to your status for several months. "

How we read it:

"Awesome file. You are within a small pool of applicants from which an interview may be extended. Please note that this does not guarantee you will be offered an interview, but you have a pretty good chance, although no one is entirely sure."

😀😀 L.O.L. you are so right!

Anyone else think this is how Vermont screens?

MSAR states they screen, however I think everyone gets a secondary. I think the small pool is the equivalent of a stats screen.

I hope not though, because that would be such a bummer that they collect secondary $$$ just to computerize screen out later.

My question is...... is there an alternate portal status after preliminary review? Has anyone gotten anything besides the pool message?

Here is my hypothesis:
-They have a light screen (e.g. GPA>3.0, MCAT>494) with required letters, etc.
-Everyone who makes it past the screen gets small pooled. As said previously, I have known some people with horrendous stats get put into the small pool.
Therefore, I believe the 'small' in small pool stands for the small number of people interviewed from the, let's face it, LARGE pool.

Unfortunately, education is now a business. When person 'x' hears that person 'y' was small pooled, and person 'y' has similarly average/less-stellar numbers...person 'x' now applies to UVM. Because, "Hey, I have a chance!". UVM consequently says "Thank You" for the donation, and moves on. It's a beautiful operation. Note: I have worked in education for a long time and this makes the most sense to me.

And to answer your last question: people either remain in 'processing' or reach the small pool until rejection. However, if previous threads are any indication, the people who remain in processing could be there due to missing a committee letter, etc. Moreover, it seems the group that remains in processing is small and is predominantly composed of later applicants ("Thanks for the money, the pool is closed").

I think you're right. That's actually quite brilliant if you think about it

hmm... it's good logic, but I am skeptical due to fact that the actual language in applicant center is pretty straight forward. SDN (I am guilty sometimes too!) just gets a little ambitious in interpretation lol

Straightforward in telling you that it doesn't guarantee an interview (protect the rear-end...the first rule of life). Brilliant in that it motivates people to apply.

Can we all agree to stop calling it the "small pool"? To be honest it really doesn't mean anything and it's spamming up the page and causing us to scroll through a whole bunch of junk to see actual important info.

I apologize for making you roll your mouse wheel a few more inches.

I definitely am more excited by some of the schools I applied to than others. I do not think there is anything wrong with that. Sure, I didn't apply to any schools I don't want to go to at all, but that doesn't mean it's bad to have preferences/favorites.

I'm normally not negative on here, but that question was answered like 10 times. It bugs me when people create new accounts just for school threads, and ask questions that are already answered and/or are easily searchable. We are applying to be doctors, if you're too lazy to google or helpless to be able to be able to do some basic research...

I sure hope there isn't a special dye that shows when you pee in the pool!

I am not sure if you are accusing me of doing this, or if this is just an additional point of contention - but I definitely did not create a new account just for school threads.

I was late to the thread and starting my third ER night shift in a row, so I hadn't taken the time to read through the thread which was admittedly my mistake. I don't really feel it warranted such an angry response, but I obviously struck a nerve, so I apologize. I realized I jumped the gun with posting and will do a little more reading next time.

No worries on your part, I was mostly being a grumpy old man - and that part wasn't directed at you - for example if you happen to be in the Tulane thread every 3rd post is about "what does the green check mark mean". There generally is a ton of good info in these threads and when the same question gets asked over and over it makes it a pain for everyone - especially when the answers are available for example on schools sites. Tons of accounts created with <10 posts, no threads created, no trophies.

This is a stressful time for everyone, but being small-pooled can be an exciting/celebratory moment for some of us, why stomp that out just because you had a rough day at work?

Also, if repetition bothers you, you may need to get some more experience with patients (and patience) as well as specialized fields: This is the world you are interested in.

Any current students or people who interviewed last year floating around? I would love to ask a few questions about the interview day. There isn't much helpful info on the site (or I just couldn't find it).
