2016-2017 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there are particular reason VCU gets so many applicants? I applied because I liked their mission and curriculum, but I'm assuming there must be something else pretty impressive to interest so many people…

They have a very large class and accept a much higher percentage of out of state students in comparison with most other state schools. Thus, you have a much better chance at being accepted here, even if you are out of state, than you would elsewhere. At least, that was my reasoning for applying here.

Welp-went from "very interested" to rejected today.... This was the closest I had to an II FML

How long ago did you get the very interested status? I have had it for about a month now and am fearing the same thing...

I have had this status since the third week of July.

I think they're just running behind schedule for the most part. I know I was supposed to get some sort of initial pass/fail update two weeks after my interview and that didn't happen. They're having a hard time keeping up with the sheer volume of work they have on their plates. All we can do is be patient.

At what point do they realize they don't have enough time and throw away the remaining stacks of applications without viewing them? Lol:nailbiting:

I'm (unpleasantly) surprised that they're having the same issues with being super behind on reviewing apps this year. VCU received my primary last year in mid-August and I wasn't reviewed until JANUARY. No joke. I received a secondary a few days later which I submitted ASAP, and I actually received an II 2 weeks later. Interviewed in February and was subsequently WLed (and never accepted), but thankful I at least had the opportunity.

So to anyone in the same boat: don't bother calling or emailing anyone to try to get your app reviewed sooner. I promise it's not going to do a damn thing.

That seems to be what the office tells people when they call. I tried calling and couldn't even get through.

Does VCU have actors in their MMI interview? or is this not a thing anymore?

Just received an update saying I was placed on hold post interview. And here I thought decisions were only given in Oct, Dec, Feb, and March

Exactly, they have probably reviewed your file already and will let you know about an acceptance in December. Keep your hopes up!

They do only give decisions on those days. This update isn't your decision. They explained all of this at the interview day. After your interview, the committee meets on a Monday and they score your application to decide if you pass or fail. If you pass (which you did), then you are put on a ranked list where you are on hold to possibly be accepted on the next decision date (December 15th in this case.) They will pull the top 25% or so off the list for acceptance. So you have not been waitlisted. You're "on hold" waiting to find out if you'll be accepted on Dec. 15.

Just to clarify - it's normal to not receive an email regarding the "very interested" status but we SHOULD be receiving emails regarding interviews correct? I haven't been checking the portal very often

I didn't receive any email for my interview. Check the portal like a madman because you never know when a surprise schedule interview tab will pop up.

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile.

Have had this status since 8/8. Ugh, this is killing me. After reading on here that the portal status just magically changes without an email, I've been checking almost every day for the last two weeks lol. *sigh*

was rejected some time August. but i awoke to an email from VCU SOM about how my status had recently changed!

my heart was racing. Oh Doc.gif, this is perfect. they re-reviewed your application and came correct. not that it matters - i've moved on, not clinging to it, not reading the rejection status daily since I plastered it all over my walls - but still, the II is nice. I type in my birthday PIN, inhale freon or whatever's in our air, and read:

Your complete application has been considered carefully by the Admissions Committee, and we regret that we are unable to offer you a position in the class beginning in August 2017.

Reeeeeejected pre-II today. Was on "the committee will review your application" for over 3 months, never got a hold status. This school was my first choice so I am really bummed. Lizzy M 67, IS. Looks like I will be retaking the MCAT in the Spring, fml.

"Your File Review is now complete. If you are granted an interview, you will receive a status update on your applicant portal. Please do not call the Admissions Office requesting special dates."

My portal was changed to this with no interview tab. Does this mean I was rejected? Anyone have any idea?

Mine changed to this a couple weeks ago. I think it just means we are on hold. Some other people on this thread got an interview after this status

Rejected!
Their rejection status change is way worse that Gtown.

A night or two ago I dreamed the "schedule interview" tab had appeared on my portal. I clicked on it and there was SO MANY interview dates I couldn't handle it and x'd my browser. I tried to go back in and the tab was gone. That's when I woke up in a massive sweat. Woo hoo, gotta love fever delirium during application season.

Been stuck at very interested status for two months now...
