2016-2017 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have had the "very interested" status for about 1 month now with no change. Has anyone been rejected with this status?

OOS been complete for almost 4 months now with no status change. This school is almost laughable how ridiculous this is.
We don't have to get the "very interested" status in order to get the actual II right? I would go nuts if I get the very interested status in a few weeks and then have to wait another 2 months....

It's not just this program, I have at least six programs that were marked complete mid/end-July with no status update as of today.

Under review for about 2 months, very interested status this week. OOS, LizzyM~69, nontrad (>5 years out from undergrad).

Just got rejected pre-II, do you find it weird that I was offered an interview at Boston University, but wasn't offered an interview here? I feel like Boston University is way more competitive.

BU is likely more holistic in its review process

Why do you say that?

Maybe your fit (experiences, ties, etc) weren't attractive to VCU but were to BU, or your secondary was better for one over the other, or they didn't expect you'd attend, or.... there are tons of reasons they could go one way or another. Getting IIs to higher ranked institutions (regardless of ranking method) doesn't necessitate those below it also interview you.

That said: Enjoy your BU invite!

There isn't some global scale and the process can seem pretty abstract. I know BU has a heavy bias against people who went to community college so perhaps this helped you, among other things.

For reference I had the opposite result with VCU and BU, but have also received II's from schools higher on the US news ranking scale, for whatever that is worth.

Yeah I guess I didn't really put much effort in the VCU secondary now that I think about it.

Submitted and complete around late August/early September. First time I checked my status around end of September, I had the "very interested" status. Nothing since! Hopefully it doesn't end up as a rejection...

I never had the "very interested" status and got a II. Went from being under review --> II

I would argue the opposite, based on the secondary questions.

Attended the interview at BU and their explanation of the type of student they are looking for seems to be very non-numbers based (i.e. I got an II and I'm considerably below their average). They seem to place a lot of value on experiences/ personal statement

Not trying to talk them down, I'm sure they are a great school and I wish you luck. Any school that biases against CC's openly, and in an easily automated fashion via the secondary input, is not holistic in my humble opinion.

Im an OOS who hasn't completed the secondary yet. Should I?

I would say if you don't feel like you will have an acceptance or hopeful II elsewhere than it couldn't hurt. I don't know when the deadline is, but worst case scenario is that you lose some money.

I think the determination of whether you are a reapplicant next year is based on the primary submission, not the secondary. So there is no additional cost from that perspective.

It's just a question of whether it's worth it to you to spend the ~100 to apply late. Even if applicants who submit secondaries this late have a low chance, those who don't submit them at all have no chance, of course.

Just got an II today! Can anyone tell me the style of interview they use? Tried to comb through the thread but couldn't find anything about it. Thanks!

EDIT: nevermind, found it with further digging 😀

Thank you! OOS complete late July. I hadn't checked my portal much so I don't know the status it was before this, but there is hope for people complete early on in the game!

Congrats! What's your story? IS/OOS? Complete date?

Also, for everyone else: I was complete in September and am awaiting initial review. I'm wondering if many others are in the same boat.

I am OOS. I was complete in early August. I got the II status straight from the under review status.

Could you clarify what you mean? Is that the first day decisions are released?
Not the first day, but one of several days they release decisions. This is what the status says:

The Admissions Committee has met to discuss your file. Your application is being placed on hold for possible acceptance at a later date. We anticipate making offers around October 16, December 15, February 1, and March 16. If any of these dates falls on a weekend the offers will be made on the following Monday. Only offers of admission will be made on the dates above.

Your profile will remain on hold, and you will receive no further communication from us concerning your hold status. The next status change you will be contacted about will be to offer you a position in the class, to notify you that you have been placed on the alternate list (the alternate list is formulated in late-March), or to notify you that the Committee will no longer be considering your file.

We thank you for your interest in our school.

Has anybody here have had the "very interested" status since August with no status change so far? I'm starting to think the status was more of random categorization than an actual expression of interest.
I am in the same boat. I am thinking it is highly likely that it is a glitch in their system and this does not mean anything. Especially since people with this status have been rejected and people without this status have received interviews. Furthermore, people who have been invited to interview haven't even received e-mails, whereas the status suggests you will.

I have pretty much considered this to mean nothing.
