2016-2017 Wake Forest University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I received an email that I somehow made the cut to receive a secondary application. It's weird because my stats are fine for DO (based on AACOMAS GPA) but basically no shot for any MD programs except for maybe HBCs. My unadjusted cGPA is 3.2, sGPA is 3.0, MPH GPA is 3.89, and MCAT is 503 (126/123/127/127). I'm also a URM (half black latino) and have strong ECs (lots of clinical and research experience with medically underserved, currently working as a tobacco cessation facilitator, etc.). If I made the cut, do you think it's worth submitting a secondary? I just find it hard to believe that they'll look past my academic stats when they review my secondary.

Some schools do, but we interview until mid-March and accept people that interviewed the very last day. By that time we are above the 130 count.
This indicates to me that there is plenty of possibility for interviews left and that you were not passed over permanently.

Does anyone know the first day of orientation/first day we have to be back from any summer trips?

@Pathdocmd is there a deadline to send a LOI after we hear our decision? I remember at the interview they said we had to send a LOI to stay on the waitlist. Can this LOI be sent months after the decision or should it be sent within weeks? And do you know approximately how large the waitlist is?

Kobeismyhero,

I can offer some guidance on this. I interviewed here on 10/6/16, accepted on 10/17/16. It is actually three one on one traditional interviews. Your interviewers can be anyone from the medical school administration, clinical faculty, basic science professors, or WFSM students. For example, I had a student affairs representative, a 4th year medical student, and a physician. They are actually really short (on the order of 20 minutes), low stress and conversational. They have an intercom system, and one of the admissions staff will be keeping time and announcing when you are permitted to enter the room, when the interview time is nearing completion, when to rotate to the next interviewer, etc. You and two other applicants will be told which room to begin at, then you will rotate when directed until you have completed all three interviews. I think they have all of your information (but I could be incorrect on that). Basically, I would know the information in your primary AMCAS application and your responses to the school's secondary prompts. Certain questions will follow up on the information in those two documents. I would also recommend studying the Wake Forest School of Medicine website. They will want to know what attracted you to Wake's program. There were also standard questions such as "Why medicine?" and so forth. Don't stress on this too much. Granted, it's important, but you will find that they really want to get to know you better as a person beyond your GPA and MCAT. Relax and be conversational and down to earth, and you will likely be fine. I think you will find that Wake has a very cohesive, supportive vibe. The day was informative and low stress. I found out very quickly what a great place Wake is. I'm thrilled that I will be there in the fall.

Good luck, and I wish you the best on your interview day!

@Kobeismyhero @ProCal2016 hit everything there. This would have to be my most relaxed interview to date. Really short (it actually was more 15 min of actual talking and then 5 min of switching around/interviewers writing down notes or whatever). I was interviewed by 2 doctors and 1 basic science faculty member, and they were all very conversational and warm and just generally pleasant to talk to.

I know it's tough to stay relaxed and have fun when going through these interviews, but really that's the best thing you could possibly do. I swear, after the first 5 min of your first interview, you'll definitely feel how relaxed the tone of the interview is and hopefully that will help you open up and really showcase your personality. I also highly suggest chatting with the other interviewees while y'all are waiting outside the rooms. I think it helped me stay loose and helped me get out of my head a bit.

Definitely read through your application again and know everything on it. I do think all your ECs and essays are available to the interviewers (but not your stats). You should probably prepare your answers for the usual Q (why medicine, tell me about yourself, what is your greatest weakness/strength, why wake). And other than that, enjoy the day! Wake Forest is awesome. The facilities are awesome. The faculty, staff and students I met were awesome. Good luck on your interview!

@Pathdocmd I think y'all send pre-secondary rejections but do y'all send pre-II rejections too or only after interview season is over?

We have sent out some pre-secondary rejections. Later we will send out post-secondary, but I don't know when that will be.

I was wait-listed recently and I have the same question. I want to send in a LOI as soon as possible but ideally I would hold off until there is some sort of "update" in my app/extracurriculars that I can mention in the email. Or is it more important to just send in a LOI asap in order to stay on the waitlist?

Can anyone interpret this status for me in terms of whether or not it means my app is still in the "to be reviewed" pile or if it means it's been looked at and I've been passed over for an interview for now?

"Your application is complete and will be reviewed continuously throughout the interview season. Interviews are by invitation from September to March. If you are invited, you will receive a e-mail or phone call to schedule an interview."

I believe that everyone gets that status and any further updates are directly sent to you via email (do not show up on the portal).

Just submitted my secondary yesterday, we'll see how it goes! Lol

Sweating it out that I have not heard anything from WF so far. I submitted everything at the end of August and they subsequently acknowledged complete. I am OOS, 3.74 gpa, 507 mcat, LM 66 Anyone interviewed or accepted already with similar stats? Trying to gauge my chances.

LizzyM 67, OOS, and complete late July - still haven't heard a peep.

Welp. So embarrassing. Just noticed I left "University of Virginia" in one of my WF secondary essays... Pasted from the wrong document. I guess that was a waste of money! +pissed+ :bang:

That sucks. I always get super paranoid about that stuff after every submission.

I somehow copied the same answer into two of the secondary prompts, and didn't realize it until I was reviewing it for interview day. I guess I was tired when I originally completed it. Nothing came of it, nor was it even mentioned. I was accepted. Maybe nothing will come of this either. I suppose you could call the admissions office and explain it if you think it will be an issue.

Good news! I called, and they kindly allowed me to send an updated essay with which they amended my secondary.:claps:

OOS gpa 3.85, MCAT 506, accepted. Wake appears to consider many aspects of you as an applicant. During the entire interview day it just felt as though they were trying to get to know you as a person.

I feel as though many schools pay lip service to "considering the whole individual" but Wake actually does it. PM me if you want to talk more about it 🙂.

Sounds like a great school, congrats!!

When did you interview? URM?

Congrats! So you give me hope as my stats were not significantly different than yours! Fingers crossed, though at this point an II would be a nice start!

Is there any sort of portal to check our application status? And I know their email said that they accept updates via email - worth it to update them on a new job position?

Yes there is. It is located at https://psappprd1.is.wfubmc.edu:802...c/B_PROCESS_APPLICATIONS.B_APPL_SAP_LOGIN.GBL

You should have gotten an email from Wake Forest with an employee ID number and an application number. You will need to enter those in the appropriate spaces in order to login to see your status.

Oh sorry, I do have that login but it only looks like a recreation of my application, nothing indicating the status of it.
The only thing it reads on the top above my application is "This is a summary of the information you entered on your Secondary Application."

EDIT: nevermind, found a different link earlier in this thread that appears similar but allows to check app status
