2016-2017 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I do hope you get your II, but my question was regarding post-interview decisions. Anyone know?
The person wasn't responding to you...

Maybe someone should call? They're receptive to phone calls. I'm an accepted student (not a humble brag) so don't really have a reason to call. Look on their admissions site for their number.

I interview last week.

I have a question regarding acceptances. I hear that wayne state has a huge preference to students from wsu undergrad. Can people confirm if they've heard the same?

Also wsu students who have interviewed please tell me the decisions you were given thanks

They do not have a strong preference for WSU alumni. I know this from years of following the school, talking to admins, and just being involved with the school. Their past demographics can show you the preference is not in their favor.

For the last few years Wayne undergrad students have been in the top three for most-accepted students from a given institution (along with UMich and Michigan State) to WSUSOM. It seems like many of these Wayne students are coming from the school's master's/post-bac programs so that can be a misleading statement, though most from these programs are also Wayne undergrads. I don't know how many Wayne applicants the school receives, so they may have a significantly lower success rate.

Nonetheless, I counted from the White Coat Ceremony program and there are 40 students in our class from Wayne Undergrad (again, some may not be directly from the undergrad program but got the master's first, which the school uses as a feeder program, or may have completed any number of other programs or life experiences that made them more competitive applicants). Still, 14% of the class is hardly a snub to the undergrad.

Number of invites sent out as of whenever they last updated the tracker (I believe January 31st).
Thanks! Someone mentioned that they are not done sending out invites yet. Does anyone know how many invites they will be sending out in total this application cycle?

Thank you I was wondering this because every wsu person I talk to gets in then I log on here and see people on sdn get wait listed a lot. So I was wondering if it's an OOS issue.

Do you think my chances are postive being a wsu student post interview?

Someone mentioned earlier that they planned to interview 950-1000.

I was reading online that this school was facing accreditation issues because they have like no minority students. Is that still a thing?

BTW what are some of the main reasons people want to attend wayne state. Is there anything that they are well known for that makes them unique?

While being placed on some level of probation is never a good thing, it sounds much scarier than it is. LCME (the accrediting body) started increasing the number of schools cited in the early 2000s so that in the last 15 years something like 50 schools have been cited for some level of probation (that's 1/3 of U.S medical schools). Wayne was cited for 12 different violations, the most serious of which was the issue of poor diversity recruitment. Given the school is in Detroit, which is about 80% black and has the word "diversity" riddled across the campus and throughout its mission statement, it was embarrassing. Last year's class had 7 Hispanic and Black students and my class has 70, so they've drastically improved and have created an Office of Diversity solely focused on recruiting and promoting diversity in the medical school. The funny thing is that our class' incoming stats were still higher than last year's too, so there really was no explanation for why diversity was lost for that period of time other than no one was paying attention.

Other factors Wayne was cited for included the need for larger lecture halls (the lecture halls fit 300 but the LCME was less than pleased with the tight fit so the school now has "overflow" auditoriums for any required lectures that stream video and audio from next door (it's actually nice so you can work on other stuff without offending the lecturer if you decide to listen from the overflow room)). The school was also cited for having too much lecture and lab time (there is a big national push for more independent study time) so now our class has 15-20 fewer lecture/lab hours a week than last year's class (debatably a good thing - I would prefer more interaction with faculty, but the LCME knows best). Some of the citations were just silly. In the report I saw (not sure where I came across it), a quote was pulled from a student complaining of not having a good quality ping pong table so, rest assured, we now have new ping pong and billiards tables. All is well at Wayne now people. On the plus side, the school is especially receptive to student input given the snarling LCME lurking in the shadows.

That ping pong comment haha

When did you interview and when will you get the decision or when did you get it if you already did.

They usually tell you at your interview what week to expect a decision by. For me, it was 4-5 weeks but I think they try to keep it to a 3-4 week maximum. It all depends on how long ago the last adcom meeting was from your interview.

I think they told me it's only a week from the interview

Anyone from the Jan 30th interview group hear back yet?

Hopin for some waitlist acceptances this week.....
Called about this....apparently they cannot disclose a time frame (even though I've called before and they've disclosed admissions committee meeting dates)..? Did anyone else get this answer?

My friend had this happen in December (others heard back from the same II date)-it was a waitlist, the waitlists were all sent out after acceptances.

Yeah, I was in that batch as well. I was calling to see if waitlisters could expect to hear somewhat soon or if we have to wait a few months because I know some people were put on the waitlist earlier in the cycle and accepted on the next round of offers so I wasn't sure if they are actively reviewing us or waiting until May-ish to look at us again.

Thank you for your insight and contribution. It's great to have feedback from current students.

Do you have any negative experiences with Wayne? If so, what are they and how can incoming students address them?

Also, are you a MI resident? If so, did you have to choose between OUWB and Wayne? WSU is my number 1, but I am still not 100% decided.

Interviewed on 1/20. My interviewer made it sound like I was totally getting in. He told me it a couple times. Have yet to hear back and now I'm getting nervous.

I interviewed on that day and haven't heard back either. So much suspense

you'll hear back by the end of this week! i interviewed 1/23 and they said by 2/10. hang in there, you'll get it!

But in the previous cycles, they sent out all the acceptances first then the waitlists :/
That's what kills me. Im so worried. I hope we both hear good news though! It seems like there was only one acceptance post from someone on here so far for today.

Negative? Scheduling conflicts arise in a school that has limited space and 1200 students. But nothing is so bad that it is going to affect your scores. Time management is the most important thing you'll need to learn.

I'm a Michigan resident. If you want to get amazing clinical experience that you can start first year, you need to come here. If you want a smaller school setting, go there.

You haven't been denied, no need to stress out. But also understand that your interviewer isn't the only one that makes the decision on if you're in or not.

can we pretty much assume we got waitlisted if we didn't hear back?

I understand that. I already live in constant stress. Only two interviews this cycle and no acceptances so far.

dont stress yet, its only monday.. and only 13:46 eastern... lol. keep the faith and you'll get it!

Thank you for the input. Do you find the big class size advantageous in any way? I went to Wayne for undergrad and most of my classes were huge so we never get the individualized attention/resources and everyone was doing their own thing without much feedback from professors. It'd be great if you can elaborate on positives/negatives of WSU SOM class size in relation to class activities/group study/research opportunities, etc.
