2016-2017 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Over represented minority group (white, Asian, etc.) As opposed to under represented minority groups. It's taken into consideration to a small degree

Is it over-represented minority or over-represented in medicine? Because whites aren't really a minority.

I think so... that is my question too! cuz it's minority...so what is its benefit compared to URM?

There is generally no benefit if you're ORM. It's thought that it can slightly hurt your chances, but I don't know how true that is. URM can be an advantage. Especially somewhere like WVU where there are very few URMs in each class. I think my class has 2, maybe 3 students that would fit this category out of over 100.

Did anyone bring their suitcase to the interview (or do current students know the process ?). I have no where to leave it. Where do they store them while you are taking the tour. I am bringing my laptop and am concerned about leaving it. Thanks

I've never seen anyone bring a suitcase to the interview. Most people leave it in their car or hotel room. If you do bring it, no one will hold it against you. You will probably leave it in the West Virginia Room where you'll meet the Assistant Dean and other staff members. It will be fine during the tour and interview.

Thank you. I am flying in without a car and staying with a med student. Based on what you said, I should be ok. Thank you for the advice.

Wow just got rejected I didn't expect that
I literally submitted last week

I think they filled a lot of their interview dates.... I got offered an interview over 3 weeks ago and it was set for Nov 7

Wow... wish i had known that before adding this school (panic move after a rejection) this week. Submitted the secondary yesterday, $100 i'll never get back. :/

I'm not positive though so keep optimism, one good thing is they let you know in a short time span -- 2-3 weeks -- they do not drag it on

II today OOS. Finished secondary on 9/8. Earliest interview date was January 6th though so likely would be wait-listed or put on alternate even if they accepted me. At least I would imagine so I'm not sure how fast WVU fills its class.

LizzyM 71~ complete First week of Sept.
They interview 800~ people and accept 50~ OOS folks.

EDIT: 703 interviews for OOS applicants.

They only accept 50 OOS? How many OOS do they interview out of those 800? 500-600?
Those 700 are OOS! They probably extend 150 acceptances post interview so ~21% chance of acceptance post interview.

That seems so excessive, is it normal for schools to only accept 20% post interview? I thought it was closer to 33% or higher?

I mean this is a very rough calculation. I dont know if they publish how many actual acceptances they send out. It would seem excessive to send out 300 acceptances to fill a class of 50 OOS. I think the very competitive schools have 25%ish post interview acceptance rate so its not unheard of.

So that means ~15 percent. I have a hard time believing that only 93 acceptances were granted for 50 seats.
Ya, it definitely seems super low. Not sure why they interview so many. I recently interviewed at my state school and they said they interview with a 4 to 1 ratio, 4 interviews to every 1 seat available. That ratio is held true for both in state and out of state applicants. I feel like a 13 to 1 ratio, which is what we have here, is kind of ridiculous.

but they changed something this cycle. the last cycle getting a secondary meant getting a II, which was deff not the case this cycle. so they might have changed the way they admit applicants or something

Medical School Application Process is low yield in general. I am grateful to have any II's. They also seem to be making changes at the medical school. UWV also has some amazing facilities so I would be lucky to matriculate here.

According to the USNWR data on the spreadsheet posted on reddit, WVU has the lowest post interview acceptance out of their listed schools -21.4 percent for both IS and OOS. (Some schools aren't included in USNWR, so it's hard to say if it's the actual lowest school, which I doubt.)

I'm happy to have an II here, but I'm not liking my odds, especially with a December interview.

They interview a TON of OOS and we more than likely will all going on the waitlist.... Sucks to know beforehand but I will always bet on myself if given the opportunity, and let the cards fall where they may.

Could you please link me to said Reddit spreadsheet?

Could you link me to that spreedsheet. My spreedsheet indicates that there are three schools with worse odds UC riverside, Suny Upstate, Rutgers.

Yes, WVU has an MD and a DO school

No, they're different. WVSOM is not affiliated with WVU in anyway (except maybe some state outreach projects). WVU (WVU SOM) is only an MD school. WVSOM is a DO school in Lewisburg, WV. Hope that helps clear things up!

Thanks!

Did they tell you when you expect to hear?

Two 15-20 minute long interviews one-on-one?

Conversational or intimidating?
Yeah they said October 17 we will get our decision. And exactly right for the interviews but it's pretty relaxed. Everyone is very welcoming and nice!

Help? So I got a 499 on my MCAT today (I cried so have some mercy before you laugh) and I'm an OOS with a 3.63 GP. Lots of volunteer and research. Got the secondaries as soon as my MCAT came back. I'm 40% tempted to not send in secondary bc of my MCAT. 60% tempted to send it in bc screw the stats and cause I have faith in God. Advice welcome

That would equate to about a little less than a 25 on the old exam. Their 10th percentile is a 25 so very few students do get in with that score, but keep in mind that those students were probably URM, IS, with significant ties to the school or Early Dexision applicants.

Agreed. I would say that those who are accepted <28 are IS or URM.

Advice welcome

Unless you are URM, the chances are low that you would get an interview. In an interview you would need to be stellar. WVU isn't just about stats, which I think is why they do so many interviews (they care more about the person's qualities than picking the highest numbers). However, there are so many applicants this year. If you think you can study harder or retake classes or do Kaplan and improve your score, I would do that. Sometimes God's answer is "not yet".

I'm interviewing here OOS (slim chances, I know), but can somebody please clarify a few things about the interview. Is it open or closed file? Are there ethical questions discussed? Were there any out of the ordinary questions? Not asking for specifics, just general info. Thanks

As far as I know it's the same from when I interviewed: open file (will ask you lots of questions about red flags, ECs, etc.), no ethics or healthcare questions, nothing out of the ordinary. I believe there's 2 interviews this year. Maybe someone who was interviewed this year can confirm everything!

10:00 sit in West Virginia Room (nice conference room) with other applicants. Introductions and overview of curriculum and campuses. Lunch with two medical students (two MS3's one male one female). Tour around campus, library, hospital. Quick overview of rural track program. Possible wait, depending on schedule. Interview #1 for exactly 20 minutes. Wait. Interview #2 for exactly 20 minutes.

Why WVU
Specific questions regarding activities
Asked about question that I left blank on secondary
Addressed gpa, MCAT
Know why any W's on your transcript or any academic red flags.
No ethics, no health policy

If you know answers to those, you're set.

Thank you, it is greatly appreciated!!

I interviewed here yesterday and I'll second that it was a very laid back and positive experience. Both interviews were very conversational and the second one the guy literally was just talking to me about the school and complimenting me on a couple aspects of my application for the duration of the 20 minutes. Both interviewers honestly seemed like they were more concerned with selling the school to me. I'm OOS and loved everything about the school. Items that I was prompted to talk about (since it was so conversational I wouldn't even really call them "questions") included my research, shadowing experiences, something on my personal statement, expanding on the "why WVU" secondary prompt, preparing for the mcat and the 3 C's I received during college. Definitely don't stress about this interview, they make it really straight forward and low stress.
