2016-2017 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Way to go, Hau5MD! I hope it makes up a bit for the Mayo rejection. I'm interviewing in Morgantown on 8/31, so perhaps we'll compare notes sometime down the road.
I'm very thankful to have a II this early (beat the turkey rule!) and it really serves to makes me a little more confident in my application (following being crushed by Mayo). Congrats on your invite as well! Definitely down to compare notes, though remind me as I'll probably forget by the time my interview rolls around (10/7)

First rejection of the cycle. OOS applicant. Within range of admitted stats on MSAR. Good luck everyone!!!

Does anyone remember if they do Friday interviews? I may have to reschedule mine.

Complete 07/27. Quick turnaround.

Sorry about the rejection 🙁 WVU may be my first of the cycle too. Last year when I applied they were, but still hoping for the best!

I submitted mine 7/28 so I'm assuming that means they're getting to close to making a decision on me, too.

Congrats! LizzyM and completion date, if you don't mind sharing? Also, any ties to WV? And did you just get the email? I feel like my decision will be coming soon...

I was waiting on my LOR so I believe it was complete 7/20. LM 65 (my MCAT is pretty bad so there is hope for those of you out there!) and I indicated I lived there until I was 5, with my extended family still residing there currently.

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile Oh! sorry I forgot to add I was on vacation out of the country, but I received the email on Wednesday

Got an email today about scheduling my II! So excited, it's my first one for the cycle! The earliest interview dates were in October. It looks like I got the last date during the first week, but there are plenty of spots open for the next couple weeks of October 🙂

I'm IS, went to WVU for undergrad.

To other people who've gotten IIs, when you scheduled on the webpage did it give you any kind of confirmation afterwards? I got to the page where it asks you to confirm, I confirmed, and then it showed me the date and time I picked. I never got an email or anything automated after that and if I click on the link in the email it doesn't say I've made a choice already or anything - it just shows all the available dates still.

I never got a confirmation either but I called just to make sure a few days later.

First II!! OOS with no ties, completed the secondary on 7/22. I also have not gotten any confirmation for my interview date hmm

Well, I'm just letting you guys know what I've heard from current students. May be wrong, but I think this is the majority of cases.

What you are saying is true for the majority of OOS students, however, it's not true of all admitted OOS students. I haven't paid much attention, but I think many/most IS students are also wait listed first.

I know a good handful of accepted students at WVU (that did their undergrad with me at WVU and were IS students) and none of them were wait listed first. Some didn't have amazing MCATs or GPAs either, so I'm not sure that's the case unless its just changing this year.

Got a rejection email just now, OOS applicant, complete Aug 3, LizzyM ~65, really quick turnaround for me too.
Low mcat though and I don't think my EC's are that great either so I understand u.u

Submitted a little over 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything yet. Not sure if a good or bad sign

Question for OOSers who are flying in - are you flying into Pittsburgh and then taking the bus? And if so, are you waiting until the day after your interview to travel back? Wasn't sure if I could avoid staying two nights with coordinating the bus and flights and all that jazz. 😵

I'm gonna fly into Pitt the night before and leave day after. I'll be there 10/21 if anyone wants to split a car, hit me up

I'll be taking a cab back to the airport too. I'll be there on September 12th, so if anyone wants to split the cab let me know

Are you IS or OOS? I'm IS and I got the II about a week and a half later. It could be that they are getting through IS people a little quicker than the OOS.

I know WVU gets toooooons of OOS applications every year (the admissions office told me this) and it takes them a little longer to sift through. I wouldn't be too worried! The email said we were supposed to find out about IIs or rejections 2-3 weeks after getting the confirmation of secondary submission email (that email alone took 2 days after I submitted the secondary).

Good luck!

Okay good to know thank you! I'm OOS. I got that email 15 days ago, so should be hearing soon!

I know of a few IS applicants who were waitlisted first in my year. I don't know about the other classes or those currently applying. Did the people you know apply early decision? That can make a difference.

No one I know applied early decision because they wanted to take time and apply to a lot of schools just in case, but things could be changing now I guess!
Maybe they're going more that route now with IS students where they havent as much in the past?

Does anyone have any info on how the structure/questions of the interview is??? Any help/tips is appreciated 🙂

In years past it's been two interviewers, one 20-30 minute interview. But I've heard it through the grapevine that they're changing it to two interviews, one interviewer in each this year. I'm not sure how true that is, but just so everyone is aware!

At least in the past, there hasn't been any questions on healthcare or ethics. Mostly straight forward things about your specific application or shortcomings. Why WVU is a big one. Don't default to "because I want to do rural medicine" unless that's actually true and you have the ECs to prove it. It's a running joke around here how all the applicants say they love rural medicine just to suck up. Just be honest and be yourself.

Well, I got rejected from here pretty damn fast. Granted I'm not from West Virginia, so I probably didn't have much of a chance anyway. To the OOS people getting II's, did you have a lot of community service volunteering?

Rejected this AM. OOS, no ties to the state, submitted 8/5

I had around 220 hours of non-clinical and 40 hours of clinical volunteer hours
