2016-2017 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does it seem like there are more people on the waitlist than in previous years or is it just me being worried?

There are also more applicants to medical school this year than in previous years.

I doubt the size of the applicant pool dictates the size of the waitlist when we are talking about thousands of applicants. Unless the class size itself increases in size, I wold imagine the size of the waitlist is fairly static.

Do you think there will a big movement in waitlist before march?

No clue, but I certainly hope so. I'm on the waitlist too like a majority of the crowed here it would seem.

+1

Last cycle people on sdn started reporting getting pulled off the waitlist during the last few days of April.

does anyone know how/when financial aid data is turned in?

So are we thinking that WVU SOM just puts everyone on the waitlist or do we have a pretty solid shot of getting in if we are on the WL?

Also, does anyone know the number of people on the waitlist?

here's how the WL works: if you meet a certain score as an IS applicant, you are in. same goes for OOS, though the score threshold is higher. if you are under a certain score you are a decline. if above decline but under admit you are WL.

no

no

Do you know the treshold for acceptance for OOS? I mean it was mentioned in both my interviews how high my mcat is.

The thresholds are not MCAT scores. The scores are composed from your application and interview, on whatever sort of scoring scale they have developed/made/decided on.

Basically the admissions committee meets every week and reviews the applicants that have interviewed over the past 7 days. The applicant is presented: MCAT, GPA, interesting extracurriculars. The two interviewers mention interview performance and tell everyone their opinions of the applicant. The ~40 adcom members then individually give the applicant a score from 1-10 with 1 being "no way in hell we're having this person in our school", and 10 being "I'd drive this student to classes myself". The scores are tallied and compared to the acceptance/WL/rejection thresholds previously agreed upon. These thresholds are unknown. My theory is that the waitlist order is determined by what score the WL applicants receive; the closer the score is to the threshold category the higher the applicant is placed on the WL, but again this purely my speculation.

do you need higher stats as an OOS applicant to get accepted?

Is there a point in applying here as a NY resident, 506 MCAT 3.85+ gpa's????
Are you asking about for this upcoming cycle?

Yes, if you can give a good reason why you want to be in West Virginia, no if not.

So with my statistics I would have a decent shot? I know nothing is guaranteed in the application process, but I just want to make sure if I were to apply I wouldnt even get considered because im a NY resident.

I wouldn't use the phrase "decent shot". According to US News around 3885 OOS applicants applied last year, 655 were interviewed, and 93 were accepted (and then 48 matriculated). So just the fact that you aren't from West Virginia puts chance of acceptance at 2.4%, and from what I can tell each of those 2.4% has a good reason why they feel they would be a good fit for WVU and viceversa. I don't think the specific state you are from would disqualify you by any means, but not having a compelling reason as to why you want to go there could. As for stats, OOS applicants are rejected with both higher and lower scores than you, so who knows.

I know literally nothing about the new MCAT scores, but if your score is in range then I wouldn't let it deter you from applying. We have a few people from NY in my class (we have people from every quadrant of country). Getting in as an OOSer kind of feels like a crapshoot sometimes, but at the end of the day, 40%+ of the class is OOS so you never know.

Do we know if wvu has a large waitlist movement?

From what I've heard it's the opposite. Especially for oos applicants.

I find that hard to believe seeing as nearly everyone who is OOS is initially placed on the waitlist.

Maybe they meant compared to the number of OOSers on the waitlist there isn't that much movement? It's true that about 40% of the class is usually OOS and a good number of them are on the waitlist first, but they put a lot of OOS people on the waitlist so it's hard to tell what the percent chance of getting off the waitlist as an OOS student is.

Pretty much.

Unless things have drastically changed, MS1 summer you take a break, do something medically relevant (externship, research, etc), and MS2 summer is Step 1 study and starting MS3. You pay for about 3 credits in order to maintain full time status, but there is no official class to take or attend in either summer.

How many of you guys will be at second look??

Has anyone received his/her financial aid package already? I still don't see anything on my portal

I believe you do still pay tuition like they're asking. A few years ago they tried splitting the tuition into thirds over the year, but I believe they went back to two big chunks for spring and fall and then a small amount over summer. They give you loans to cover summer living expenses. You're only off MS1 summer.

I called the financial aid office and was told that for years 1-3 COA/tuition is split into 3 (fall, spring, summer). And then year 4 is just two chunks, fall and winter totaling about the same amount as years 1-3 though. (This is how their website lays it out as well)

For the years that include summer (1-3) your COA and award/loans for fall and spring is calculated before the fall. And then summer is a separate calculation/award done in the spring.

Does anyone know why it is done like this? I feel like it's a little weird/confusing. When I recieved my financial aid package it only included fall and spring and I was like oh, that's not too bad. But there's actually another 25,000/yr hiding around the corner... (I'm OOS)

Our of curiosity, did they email you your financial aid package? Or did you have to check a portal or something
They sent an email to the mix email, that just said to check the portal.
