2017-2018 University of Cincinnati

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I'm going through their online application for financial aid (UC's app, not FAFSA) and there's the option to apply for the UC Long Term Loan. Any current students have any info on this? It says interest doesn't accrue while in med school and you can defer payment without interest for 3 years during residency, too. But I'm wondering what the interest rate is after that and how it compares to the government loans? And does getting this loan affect whether I can get need based or merit based scholarships?

Do you know residencies take into account that you went to Cinci, a competitive school?

Ehhh I meant I wouldn't consider it a "competitive" school in any way. If by "competitive" you mean it's hard to get into, it's solidly mid-tier and I wouldn't consider it competitive in that sense. If by "competitive" you mean a competitive environment once you get in, that's definitely not true either, it's very collaborative.

I meant competitive to get into. I interviewed there and yea I agree it felt very collaborative. Just based off their GPA and MCAT, they seem to have pretty high standards compared to the general population of MD and DO schools

I think it's getting more and more competitive, and obviously getting into any med school at all is difficult, but I don't think Cincinnati is too bad in terms of admissions. I mean, they accepted me, so it can't be that hard, right? 😛

+1 LOL

Is there any benefit to emailing or calling if I have been complete for a long time but still no communication about a decision? Or should I just keep waiting?

keep waiting and be patient it is typically very frowned upon to rush your application/inquire about it without some reason to be contacting them other than you are anxious

Anyone know if they're still sending out decisions today for 10/24? Or are we waiting for the next time they release decisions? Starting to lose hope on hearing before Thanksgiving....

Accepted!!! Just checked my portal right now. Interviewed on 10/24 🙂
How do you know if you've been accepted? I just checked my portal and it changed to something used by students so I assume I've been accepted as well...not sure though as I can't actually see my application status.

Edit: JK I found the status tab. Accepted!

Yay! Congrats! I also got a phone call soon after 🙂

I'm fairly certain you'll hear well before Thanksgiving. At the very least, your application has definitely been reviewed.

Alternate list...from what I understand that's basically a rejection?

I know of several acceptees that will likely matriculate elsewhere though I don't know if that will translate to alternate list movement.

Sorry, this is unrelated, but does anyone know if the ROSE program interviews are in the same MMI format as regular admissions? Also, will it look bad if you don't choose to stay with a student host the night before?

Complete silence since completion in late July. OOS, very strong ties to the area since I lived in the UC dorms for a summer while participating in the SURF program. GPA 3.8+, MCAT 505-510. Would LOVE the opportunity to interview here. Are they receptive to letters of interest??

Also did SURF and have similar stats - still silence

They're not bad - I actually liked them a lot more than the 1 on 1 interview format.

I was really scared too because I'm a total introvert. However, they were actually a lot of fun and I somehow got in.

The UC MMI is very chill, they make it really clear what they're looking for and make the environment comfortable. It's actually kinda fun

Thanks for the input, I am starting to feel a little better about it now. Any advice you'd be willing to share? My interview is on December 13th.

Has anyone had to reschedule their interview? I got an II for the middle of finals week :/ trying to take my finals early, but my professors haven't gotten back to me yet so we'll see how that goes. Does it look bad to reschedule your interview?

Nope, not a big deal.

They scheduled my interview during finals week too so it's going to be a busy time trying to prepare for both, but I don't want to have to reschedule for a much later date. However, I'm sure they would understand your predicament.

I rescheduled my interview earlier this month due to a conflict with another interview and it was no problem.
