2017-2018 University of Missouri - Columbia

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would think mid March. There is the possibility it could be later than usual due uncertainty surrounding the budget. It would be interesting if they expect the class size to be 96 in March when most of the decisions go out but later find out they have the resources for 128. Maybe we can call our state representatives and they will listen. 🙄🙄🙄
The way they explained it to us, they'll accept up to 96 until they get confirmation for money which I guess means the rest will be accepted after. I think it's weird that Mizzou only accepts the exact class size and everyone else is on the waitlist. Most other schools seem to always accept ~25-50 more before putting the rest on the waiting list

So do you think they will release decisions today or tomorrow?
Likely tomorrow, I’m a reapplicant and they seem to like their fridays. Thursday’s have happened though so …

Also unchanged. Better than nothing, I suppose!

Unchanged again. Maybe we'll all continue to be passed over until March

Also joining the unchanged train with you all.

Wondering if they send unchanged emails in a certain order....what time did you get your emails?

Anyone else bothered by the fact grades aren't P/F here? You can start honoring classes by 2nd year

They told me they were pass fail, infact one of my interview questions was about this lol
Really? On the MSAR, it says the first year is "satisfactory/unsatisfactory" which I guess is P/F. 2nd year is Honors/Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory . 3rd/4th are Honors/Letters of Commendation/Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. There's also internal ranking that stretches across all 4 years.

They asked you about their grading system in an interview?

From the article, it sounds like they'll have their full 128. From my interview day, they said 96 if no funding but who knows anymore
I think the legislative session for the budget is not until the end of February/ early March. So there may not be a definite answer until then... :/

that article is from last year y'all
It is, and sorry guys I just noticed. That's what I get for multitasking and googling at the same time . I just deleted the original post though I've seen other recent articles mentioning the same thing.

Yeah its either Honors, pass or fail after the second year. and they didn't ask me about their grading system lol, I asked them about whether or not they have seen improvements in overall student performance from Pass/fail vs standard grading system.

I would HIGHLY recommend you guys consider doing this. The budget cuts aren't just hurting you guys, but the current M1s since we were supposed to be the first class that sends 32 down to Springfield. A lot of my peers are really worried about going to Springfield because the funding is questionable. Which is a damn shame cause the setup for Springfield is pretty amazing.

In fact, these budget cuts are hurting ALL of Missouri. The whole reason for the class expansion was because the AMA (AAMC?) wanted all schools to do a ~20% class size increase to account for physician shortfalls. MU's increased class size will only benefit Missouri by providing more physicians to serve our state. The legislature's budget cuts are short-sighted and will only serve to hurt the state going forward.

First year is "satisfactory/unsatisfactory" which is the same as "pass/fail". If you are "unsatisfactory" on a portion of the exams, you have to remediate the exam during the break week of the following block. I.e. If you fail part of block 1 (Aug - Sept) then you retake that part during the break between block 2 & 3.

Second year is "honors/satisfactory/unsatisfactory". Same deal except if you get >90% on all exams AND "superior" (I think that's the verbiage) from your PBL facilitator you get "Honors". This is pretty damn hard to get.

If they don't get funding, are they going to shut down the Springfield campus? That seems like a waste considering how much time/money they spent.

About how many people actually end up honoring 2nd year? Are some blocks harder to honor than others?

I think they are still going forward with Springfield. They're just going to squeeze everything tightly to make it work. If I go with the last year's article I read.

If I remember correctly they are gonna make my classes 32 work *somehow*. After that it will be up in the air depending on funding. I think they are trying to keep it even if they have to reduce the size that goes down there. The Springfield community very much wants us there, so it's pretty stupid what the legislature is doing (but what's new there?).

I'm not sure how many honor, but looking at the averages of our last 2 tests, it would be less than 10, probably more around 5. Mind you you have to get "honors" from your PBL facilitator and that information isn't available for us to review.

I've heard Block 1 and Block 5 have the highest fail rate. Thus Block 5 would be one of the hardest to honor in. I think what honors you get during clinical years are more important than pre-clinical. But obviously every feather in your cap can matter. Block 7 and 8 people tend to not care anymore because they are studying for STEP.

So what's the vide here on interview day? Beard or no beard? Any thoughts?

Handlebar mustache.

Honestly, I think you are fine either way. My student interviewer showed up in scrubs and a fleece and didn’t appear well rested so I think a well groomed beard should be fine.

I had a short beard, I feel like as long as you look professional with one there isn't an issue. don't be looking like you have been hiding in a cave for the past year.

FWIW, the FB group has 39 people (10 of which are current M1's (I think)).

That is what I based my range on; however, I did not know about there was that many M1s apart of it. Unsure how many people without facebook or have yet to join affect the number. Still hope for the ever growing army of unchanged.
