2017-2018 University of Rochester

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected just now pre II. "Because you did not receive an acceptance to Rochester does not mean that you are not qualified for medical school." Thanks but I'll trust the schools that have accepted me over you on that now.
Im sorry to hear that, Do you mind telling me when your app was complete?

Rejected today pre-II. Complete 7/8. It's been real, URMC. 👍

Wondering what shoes to wear for interview since it's gonna be cold and snowy. ? I'm from an area where it's always warm lol helppp

Is the tour indoor only or do we go outside at all?

I'm from a warmer climate and don't have a nice coat. I have a puffy ski coat, or I could just tough it out from the car to the building. What would you guys recommend?

I'm from the area and right now there is roughly 6-8 inches of snow on the ground. I would suggest bringing boots or heavier shoes for getting from the visitor lot into the building (no more than a few hundred feet of distance), but formal interview shoes, whatever those may be for you, should be fine for the tour as it was completely indoors. As for clothing, any sort of jacket should be enough for the short walk into the building.

Just got rejected now. 75 LM, OOS.

A little hurt though, since I go to school super close to them.

Is there anyone who's sent an in the area request who could give me an idea of how to word it? I'm thinking about sending them one but don't want to say anything that would hurt my chances or send it when they aren't receptive to it. Thanks!

I got a call from them tonight but I wasn't able to return it during office hours. Does a call=acceptance? After all the waiting throughout this process, this one is completely self imposed.

Here's how I worded one of mine

Dear X School of Medicine Office of Admissions,
I am currently scheduled to be in the X area for an interview from Date 1 to Date 2.
I understand that you only interview a limited number of qualified applicants, and that many of the early interview spots may be already filled. However, if I am fortunate enough to currently be under consideration for an interview at the X School, I was wondering if it would be possible to schedule it in that general time frame to avoid the cost of multiple flights to the area, as well as to minimize time spent away from school.
I realize that this is relatively short notice and if I am not able to interview at this time, if necessary, I would be happy to travel to X in the future.
Thank you for your help and consideration.
Sincerely,

Thanks so much! That's really helpful and gives me a general idea, since I wasn't sure how to word it so as not to sound like I expected special treatment, etc. Flights to almost anywhere are really expensive from where I live so trying to cut costs as much as possible. Hope you're having good luck with this cycle so far!

yea, i was thinking about sending one when i go home for break, however im from downstate and i don't think rochester would consider that "in the area"

I know...was thinking the same thing. I'm actually going to be closer to NYC for a trip, which isn't "in the area", but if I combine flights, it'd only be about $100 more or so, which would sure save on having to pay for an entire new round trip. But this is why I haven't bothered to send one yet.

Did anyone get an email confirming their update was received after sending one?

Waitlisted Monday. IS, LM76, and interviewed mid-November.

Hi, quick question about the "Activities and Essays" that Rochester asks you to fill out before your interview - is work considered an "extra-curricular/volunteer experience"? I'm taking a gap year and working, so that's something I would usually list as a significant experience but I'm not sure it falls into either of these categories. Thanks!

Yep! I think all but one of my activities were paid employment (non-trad).

Hello all! This whole cycle I have been stalking SDN without contributing, and I feel guilty. I am updating all school threads that I have heard from so everyone can get some more data!

Interviewed 10/16, WL in mid-November. Really liked the school itself, didn't think my interviews went particularly well. Will probably withdraw next week.

LizzyM: 71.5, OOS, doing an Americorps gap year in Jacksonville. Let me know if you want to know more!

Congrats to all of the acceptances!!

for anyone who interviewed, on the page of the online application where we are asked to list our 4 most significant ECs, did you write a sentence about each one or did you just include the title? As in, did you write 'Scribe at Internist's Practice' and nothing else, or did you include a description of the activity?

awesome, thank you! congrats on your acceptance btw 🙂 it seems they are pretty lenient about the length of the two essay questions, but about how many words were each of yours if you don't mind me asking?

Both my essays were ~350 words! Thank you and best of luck in your interview!
