2017-2018 Virginia Commonwealth University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I told my parents about the "very interested" status and that was probably my biggest mistake. Every other day my dad asks me, "so when is VCU going to send you an interview?" At first I told him "Soon!" Now I just mumble something and change the subject.

omg this is me x100 right now

Any advice for the MMI?
Know the basic questions like why medicine, biggest challenges, strengths and weaknesses, etc.
None of the situational questions are super out there; just be personable, confident in your answers and smile! They have plenty of follow-up questions for you so don't feel the need to ramble on. I personally left feeling really confident, especially since almost all of my interviewers were super receptive and interested in what I had to say

For those that have interviewed: afternoon interviews arrive at 10am, right? I just want to make sure I'm not showing up late. Thanks!

It's been like 3.5 weeks since the last II on here. Anyone know if they have been sending them out still? Lots of rejects, lots of very interested, nothing else.

So I'm new to this thread, but should I not put too much thought into this update?
Please anticipate an e-mail from us regarding a possible interview date.

VCU is considering conducting waitlist interviews — no other details to share....stay tuned.

How have they already interviewed over 800 people?

They haven't. They are interviewing only 650 this year and I imagine that 650 is projected out to the Feb/March interviews. But perhaps they plan to make all of their initial offers off this first wave that are already scheduled out to March, and then basically those given a waitlist interview will compete with candidates on the initial waitlist for a higher spot. Just speculation...

SN: I heard VCU has agreements with a few schools in Virginia to interview students from their programs and I think they fill up a portion of their slots with those students. I think it's pretty cool because it gives students from less prestigious colleges in Virginia a fair chance to compete for slots, especially since they might be more invested in the central or southern VA area (i.e. more likely to stay and serve this area after med school). So while we think they just used up all their interview slots on those who submitted in June & July (which might also be true), it could be that they didn't have too many to begin with due to those agreements. This is also just speculation...

Does that mean interviews for non-waitlist seats are already filled?

So you filled almost all of your II seats off of people who submitted in July?

I submitted my secondary the same day it was released and still haven’t been reviewed by the subcommittee (how does their algorithm work?). If this is the case, I’ll be livid.

And the plot thickens...

I'm just salty because I went to VCU for undergrad, so if they really did reserve spots for certain schools, I wish I had been one of those "guaranteed" interviews 🙁

I called earlier and the lady told me that they are still sending out interviews. So I dont know whether she is right, or not as informed as dean

Same complete date...still waiting for the Sub-Committee to look at my unworthy app, 4 months and counting.

I know you meant the “unworthy” part in jest, but I just wanted to send some happy thoughts. You aren’t unworthy (most wont ever make it this far), and I hope you will find success 🙂

Haha thanks!! 😀
Yeah, I was just joking. I know I've put in a decent amount of effort into this, just the waiting sucks. Good luck to you and the rest of us! Wouldn't minding interviewing for the WL either. I just want an excuse to come see Richmond. 😛

I went to UVA so youd think that if they actually reserved spots UVA would be included too... but nope no II or anything. Complete since July

lol I didn't mean UVA... since that's one of the more prestigious schools (in the country). What I meant was less well-known schools (i.e. VSU would be my guess as to a school on that list). But what do I know... With 10,000 applicants and only 650 interviews, I'm sure there is a cutoff somewhere...

(side note, being from a school that has a partnership... at least for other schools I know that do this... doesn't mean you're guaranteed a slot, but perhaps if you have above a certain GPA or MCAT or if you're in a special pipeline program...)

The Admissions Dean, Dr. Whitehurst-Cook, is female lol M4s can do an admissions elective so it may be one of them or maybe another individual (e.g. Dr. Whitehurst-Cook).

Edit: Your avatars never fail to rip open the healing wound of losing Jim Lahey this year

The profile says male, and they seem to know more about the process than any student would.. I'm guessing Dr. Keith Baker or someone equivalently involved.

Portal status just changed to: "Your complete application has been considered carefully by the Admissions Committee, and we regret that we are unable to offer you a position in the class beginning in August 2018. The Committee understands the disappointing nature of their decision and urges you to consult with your pre-med advisor to discuss the possibility for improvement of your application. We wish you the very best of success with your future plans." OOS complete 8/16, best of luck to everyone else!

No it was a pre-II R, sorry should've been more clear!

I just thought it was odd because I haven't seen anyone else report this status and it went straight from "your app is under review" to "take this L", no II, no hold, no review complete, no very interested. My stats are a bit higher than their average matriculant stats on msar and i've had other II's and an acceptance so I doubt there's anything heinous on my app lol, but my acceptance was to one of my top choice schools so no hard feelings!

They probably realised that they spent 4-5 months digging through July apps so they've now settled on just rejecting people.

I got an II today by phone call (had interested status for about 4 weeks)! They offered me interview dates in 3-4 days...and some in January as well. Looks like people are cancelling and that they're opening spots.

Can anyone tell me what the schedule is like for VCU's interview day? They don't seem to have any info on the Portal about when to actually arrive there, unless an e-mail is slowly making its way over haha.

Well if you interview on a Saturday they have afternoon interviews! (shout out to schools that offer saturday interviews). Morning interview day starts at 8, afternoon at 10. The dean comes and goes over some welcome information and the MMI process. If you have a morning interview you then have the MMI. After that you go to a conference room for an information session on the curriculum and financial aid. Next, there's a tour of the school with M2's. If you have an afternoon interview, you now have your interview. I interviewed here and I can honestly say it was a wonderful experience! The interviewers were very warm and I felt very comfortable opening up about my experiences to them. The MMI was much more conversational than I expected!

thank you so much! I have a morning interview despite it being on a Saturday, which is kind of unfortunate because it happens first thing and there's no time to calm the nerves D:

Rejected--never had the very interested status so I knew this one was a lost cause. Complete 9/11.

Rejected on Friday. Post secondary, Pre II, OOS with no state ties so was pretty much expecting it. Good luck to everyone else applying to this school! Complete mid September.

Congrats! See guys there's still hope for "very interested" purgatory.

Just got the very interested update this morning! Complete August 10

So, for anyone that has gotten a II after the "very interested" status, how long did it take?

First II this cycle 😀 -- OOS Resident of CA, 3.84cGPA/3.83sGPA, MCAT 505 -- had "committee is interested" status for two weeks before being able to schedule an interview through the tab; no email or contact, just kept checking portal -- no record of ties to state in AMCAS primary

II! Complete 7/7, "very interested" status earlier today then II in the afternoon

Congrats to everyone being accepted!!

Out of curiosity- Has anyone been moved from the "Very Interested" status to II recently? I have had this status for about 2-3 weeks.

Finally went from very interested to II today! Have had that status for a few weeks now. IS complete late July. Scheduled for late November so I think maybe some earlier ones are opening up and they're trying to fill those slots. Pretty excited!! 🙂

lol that's usually how it goes (VI -->II). but lately a lot of people have been sitting on very interested for weeks if not over a month waiting for interview slots to open up. Word on the street is VCU got >10,000 applicants this year and are reducing their class size from ~220 to ~180 or something. But as more interviewees are getting accepted and decided to go elsewhere, I think more VIs might get converted to IIs in the coming weeks...

At this point (since it is early), it is likely that you will get an interview. However, it seems that many people have the "very interested" status for 3+ weeks before hearing anything again.

So, for anyone that has gotten a II after the "very interested" status, how long did it take?
Seriously do some looking on your own before just asking. You can click maybe a few times just to find these answers...
