2018-2019 Des Moines University (DMU)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also accepted today (from 10/15 interview)! First acceptance ever...after a waitlisted MD cycle last year. Without going in depth into my app, this school definitely rewards reinvention (I've been told most DO schools do). Interview day had a smaller group and they do a good job of relaxing you before your interview.

Anyone interviewing 11/29 wanna meet before or after? PM me!

Any Californians currently attending this program ?

I’m interviewing here in a couple weeks and wanted to know how you adjusted to
Living in Des Moines and how you like the school.

How well do you feel the program prepares students for COMLEX?

I'm not from Cali but there are a lot of people in my class that are (I'm 2nd year). Basically from what I've heard its the cold is basically the adjustment you have to make. I can't speak to specific adjustments though.

In terms of board prep, our averages last year were 600ish for COMLEX and 230s for USMLE so yeah we do super well on board scores.

Thanks for the quick reply,

That’s very impressive (the board scores)

What made you choose DMU?

Its a great school, has a good family atmosphere, and I'm from the midwest so it's close to home. The interview impressed me very much also

How much time do you get for dedicated board prep?

It came up as one of the submitting requirements. Previously, I had 10/10 items submitted. Now it is 10/11 with a new item added: Outstanding confirmation letter

Mine is:
"Outstanding Requirements Confirmation"

Any ideas?

Edit: Accepted

Its often different for everyone the initial number... whatever your requirments are post interview.... 10/10 or 4/4 or 12/12 when you check 3 weeks later it it changes to 4/5 or 10/11 thats basically a done deal and expect an email soon thereafter.

Anyone who is waitlisted, does your email include: "While we are currently unable to offer you a seat in the class, we may make additional offers of admission at the close of the application year. Your position within the Alternate List guarantees that you will be considered if space becomes available."

Im hopeful that this means im in the upper quartile of their quartile-ranked alternate list, so just wondering

Mine says the exact same thing. I hope you're right!

My KCU-KC II was after DMU so that 6 weeks hasn’t passed but even if KC accepts me I’m going to have to go DMU.
I feel both schools are top tier but DMU is lower stress and I am self motivated so I think I can excel there while still being happy.

My wife is a teacher in FL and 47 states have reciprocity except Iowa... Does anyone have experience with this?

Google “Iowa Teacher Reciprocity” and there’s a phone number. I don’t believe it’s overly hard and she can register as an “out of state educator” or something like that. My wife changed states and now hold licenses in two but we were fortunate to be in a reciprocity state.

It looks like both states are members of the interstate teaching compact (NASDTEC?) So the process should be pretty straightforward. My wife went through something similar in nursing, where Iowa wasn't reciprocating to our state per se, but they were a "compact" state so the process was actually pretty easy. As my esteemed (learning) colleague stated, just call and try to talk to a human to be sure. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the advice... Yea I probably owe Chibucks one of those cafeteria cookies after this cycle 😛

Keep checking your portals. See if the supplemental is n/n+1

It says “5/6 required items received” with “Outstanding Requirements Confirmation” being the thing that’s “Not Received” so not sure what that means, if anything. I think it just means that I don’t have any required classes I have yet to take that need proving that I passed.

Accepted. Email should come in about 3 hours

Well, that would certainly be a nice way to start Thanksgiving weekend.
