2018-2019 Des Moines University (DMU)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It says “5/6 required items received” with “Outstanding Requirements Confirmation” being the thing that’s “Not Received” so not sure what that means, if anything. I think it just means that I don’t have any required classes I have yet to take that need proving that I passed.

Based on previous posts, I believe this means you have been accepted! The outstanding requirements may mean your degree, transcripts, etc. But, for your sake, I hope I am right. Congrats!

Hahaha see above post. Thanks!

Maybe we will be hitting the gym next fall! Haha

I hope so! I am charging you with keeping me in shape and coming to Friday night soccer with me. We’ll be needing the stress relief.

Any Californians currently attending this program ?

I’m interviewing here in a couple weeks and wanted to know how you adjusted to
Living in Des Moines and how you like the school.

How well do you feel the program prepares students for COMLEX?

I am from CA, basically it is a lot colder obviously and the weather can be far more random then on the west coast. I made the tough decision and choose DMU actually over a few of the CA, however, because the program has the stats to back it and the Des Moines has a surprising amount of things to do. There are plenty of housing options around the school with several large apartment building being within only a few hundred feet which is pretty nice.

As the other poster stated DMU board scores are relatively good with I believe the last year average for USMLE being a 230 with a majority of students taking it.

How much dedicated board time does this school give?

What exactly is the curriculum? Seems like a mix of traditional/systems.

The cirriculum is changing to block/ systems for first year, it was already for second year. It seems like it will be the same style as RVU/ KCU which is arguably the best. The board time is 6 weeks from what I remember in the II but some can change there elective I think to make it 8 weeks?

So we’re the first year to have this new curriculum? Not sure how I feel about being Guinean pigs

We will, but I don’t think that it is as “experimental” as it sounds. Several other schools have implemented a similar format with great success. After speaking to a few DMU students, they felt that the change would ultimately be beneficial. Classes should remain non-mandatory to my understanding.

Tough decision. I also have an acceptance at kcu so might choose the one that’s more experienced.

Do u kno if dmu exams are nmbe style

I don’t believe DMU’s exams are nmbe style or are going to be. Perhaps a current student can comment on this.
I’m in a similar situation as you in terms of KCU and DMU. I’m leaning towards DMU though.

May I hear why?

DMU and KCU have similar pass and match rates as well as similar performance on the USMLE.
I find the biggest difference to be (besides location) that KCU is a more stressful/ intense curriculum while DMU is more latest back and relaxed. I find I am self motivated and would perform fine at DMU and be in a better mental state.

Honestly, DMU and KCU have very similar USMLE/COMLEX scores and both place ~80% in ACGME residencies. It’s a tough call, but I genuinely felt more “at home” during my interview at DMU. Obviously there’s a lot of subjectivity to that, but I just feel like I would excel more so at DMU. Also, I was accepted to KCU-Joplin, and while it has the same pre-clinical education as KCU-KC, it’s still a new/branch campus.

Also... I’m a hooper... did you see DMU’s basketball courts? I’m going to light up intramurals there.

Why DMU? Cause I get buckets...

But with DMU essentially switching to blocks for first year as well, isnt the curriculum more or less the same now?

And what about rotations for the two schools?

Idk of the curriculums will be the same but it is a movie in the direction. DMU has multiple choice anatomy exams and is known to be lower stress than KCU.
Now someone that thrives when pushed is going to perform ten fold at KCU. Someone who is highly self motivated is going to enjoy life more at DMU. I feel I would perform similar at either school but my life will be “lower” stress at DMU.
The area is slighter more north (a couple degrees avg colder?) and KCU is in a rough neighborhood (this doesn’t bother me being near Miami)

Weather is actually quite a bit better in KC comparatively. You're going to get less snow and more days above freezing.
Dmu is switching their curriculum to block schedules but I don't believe the exam format will change. I can't speak to all classes but I know Biochem and Micro were professor written exams. Those are what I took for my Master's there but I bet the exam format is standard.

Hows the cycle/ DMU going?

Didn't get in to DMU after interview, but I'm prepared to apply next year. My PIs have been super helpful in giving me advice and helping me formulate a game plan. And I interviewed well is feedback I've been given. I just haven't had enough time to fix some things from undergrad.

Dont worry you will get there, heck im 30!

I'll be 30 I'm May!! Lol
So many people don't get in their first time so it took me while to get over it but I'm not quitting, if anything, more motivated because it's not about me as a person, it's about my numbers and previous circumstances that we're out of my control and way different than present.

I’m 30 as well. Didn’t apply to DMU round 1 but this is also my second round applying to medical school and I’m not giving up either. We all have different paths but in the end, we all find what we are looking for! Good on ya! We are all in this together!

Hi all, what is the anatomy curriculum like? Is the course year long? For lab, is one cadaver assigned to one group or shared between different groups from other programs? Thank you!

Idk how to really describe a full curriculum so you'll have to get more specific. Yes year long, 1 cadaver between groups of about 5. There are also two different anatomy sections, so realistically its between 10 students, but there are only 5 in the lab at a time. Usually pre-lab quizzes before labs that show you read the procedure and such beforehand so it isn't a waste. Its shared between DOs and DPMs for the most part, but my whole group was DOs. The faculty are awesome in anatomy too

It’ll be my first traditional interview here, my others have all been MMI.

Are the questions mostly about your application?

I’m just wondering what sorts of things to expect.

It's a fairly laid back and informal interview. I would recommend being familiar with your own application and be able to articulate your experiences and how they relate to the different characteristics needed in order to be a successful physician. That's about as much detail as I can go into, I'm afraid.

Are you a current student? The interview format changed this year. My interview focused very little on my application and I didn't get to talk about myself amd weaknesses in my application really at all.

For the one asking: look over this thread and prepare for a job interview and Google common questions.

I honestly didn’t know that it was answered already, but your response probably took the same amount of time to write as an actual answer.

You must be very fun to hang out with.

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, current student interviewer. A lot probably depends on who interviews you; that's basically where the only variability lies this year. I think there are opportunities to talk about your experiences with this format, but you would have to be pretty persistent about it. That having been said, I would not have done nearly as well with it compared to when I interviewed.

You can check over the next 1-2 hours (10-11 EST) and then the email comes in like 4-5 hours (2-3 EST)

Guess we waiting next week guys. Onto week 5.

Edit: portal change with the outstanding requirement needed

Can we start on our immunization & blood titers?

or do we need to wait 6 months prior to matriculation?

No you can do the immunizations. Any school will require them and you just need to have everything documented. I'd probably let them do the titers though.
