2018-2019 Des Moines University (DMU)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Waitlisted from 1/17. Not really surprised or heartbroken. A lot of external factors feeling like life is encouraging me to make the leap out of the Midwest anyway.

Where you headed? You can pm me if you want

Just an FYI on my interview on 2/2/19 they told us they are still accepting at the same pace as in August but in a few weeks they are going to pump the brakes.

They said the same thing on my interview day, but I’m taking it with a grain of salt.

Here’s what someone posted here earlier:

Just got put on the Alternate List. Interviewed 12/13. OOS.
The email says the class is currently filled and I’m guaranteed an acceptance if seats open up. Does anyone have any insight on this?

So they’re sending out emails to waitlisted people that the class is filled but they’re telling interviewees that they’re accepting at the same pace as in August... Kinda confusing.

I wouldn't stress it too much, I'm sure there is going to be some big movement once traffic day rolls through.

As someone who scheduled for the end of February, this makes me...nervous

They apparently pull a lot of people from the first quartile of their waitlist and sometimes even from their second; some years, they dig into their third and fourth quartiles. Being WLed at DMU definitely beats getting rejected.

True I'm just nervous that it's going to be a waste of $700 to fly out there. Oh well nothing I can do about it now. Just gotta perform well and hope for the best

If you dont have an acceptance yet then you shoukd be more than happy to shoot for such a great school. You have strong stats by your LM.

Interviewed 1/17
Accepted 1/30

Does anyone have an opinion on Des Moines vs. Marian in Indianapolis? I'm struggling. Thank you!

I chose DMU over Marian. Marian is good but the new factor scared me. Don't know a ton about how they've progressed in the last couple years. PM Me if you have questions

Hey, interviewed at both and waitlisted at both (but withdrew my app). I didnt care for MUCOM during my interview day. I loved DMU. If you dont have a spouse/family, then i dont see the city of Indy providing anything significant to choose MUCOM over the very established DMU

^ to that point, outside of the Butler area, doubt you really are gonna find much 'nightlife' in Indy regardless. DSM isn't a bustling metropolis either but I find it more fun than Indy. The pro sports/large college tournaments and stuff are a big draw though that's for sure
EDIT: also its not like you'll have all the time in the world to go out and meet a ton of people, so I'd probably just go with school vibes with a little bit of city as a tie breaker. Indy is big in medical devices though so opportunities are there to do some stuff

Got the “outstanding requirements 6/7” portal change today around 1:15. Hopefully good news to follow. Interviewed 1/24

Acceptance email at 4:43. WOO FIRST OF THE YEAR **** YES LETS GET THIS CHEDDAR AFTER YEARS OF CRIPPLING DEBT BOYS

On the fence a bit since it’s a plane ride away from home but def grateful to get into a great school :’)

Rejected Prost interview, my first post interview rejection lol, but I kinda saw this coming because my interview did not go well, oh well, good luck everyone else!

II 1/24
WL 2/6.

How do we know which quartile we are placed into?

Thanks everyone!^^
Can anyone provide information on the new curriculum? Will it be a systems-based block system? And does anyone know what the exam schedule will be like? Any info you can add would be great. Thanks!!

Congrats!! If you have questions about being far from home feel free to message me - I am also a plane ride away from home (technically two since Des Moines Airport refuses to fly direct to my home city!)

Does anyone know about the IT requirements/most common laptops students use? I've heard that you get a laptop from DMU and am wondering if most students find this sufficient for their needs.

You don’t get tech support if you don’t use the DMU laptop soooooo

I had one before coming and it’s turned into a work computer vs everything else computer sort of thing. Unless you’re hardcore gaming the laptop they give you is fine. They’re piloting iPads though so who knows with your class

Got an II last night but I'm already accepted to my top choice DO school so Ill be turning it down. Hopefully someone on here will get it instead!

Got this on 1/17/19
Due to the large volume of highly competitive applicants, we have placed your file on hold. This simply means that while you are not invited to interview with us at this time, you are still under consideration for a possible interview later in the application cycle.

Doesn’t look hopeful as it looks like the class is full. These pre II holds are such a tease.

New question: thoughts on DMU vs. Nova???

n=1 (and I like DMU so I'm biased. Here's 2 reasons why I'm hesitant on Nova.

1) Nova's decreasing Comlex pass rates over the past few years. Unclear why this is and things might be better, but still not a great look for an established school.

2) Nova is expanding. Recently opened an MD school and I believe are opening a Clearwater campus for their DO program. This might sound subjective, but I'd rather attend a school that puts less emphasis on expanding campuses and more emphasis on the students in front of them

^^agree. When I interviewed at Nova I kind of felt like I was being given a dishonest sales pitch... the admissions folks were not forthcoming about their board scores or match rates when fellow candidates asked (acted like they were unsure and said they were "very good" and would get back to them) and an administrator who talked to us seemed annoyed with questions about the allocation of resources with a new DO campus and MD program. Idk the whole institution kinda seemed like a money grab to me but that’s just the vibe I got. Oh and my interview was <10 minutes long. But I might just be bitter because they owe me $50 and I got waitlisted lol so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Can any accepted students shed some light on the timeline between interview day and filling out all required forms/background check stuff? I will have my interview in a few weeks but I also need to leave the country for family obligations for 2-4 weeks at the beginning of March. I've read that the immunizations are due a few weeks before class starts but I cannot find any information about the background check. I'm worried that I will be accepted but will have to return early/cancel my trip.

I wouldn’t worry at all my friend! Lots of people are admitted after March and have no issue. The acceptance paperwork I have for DMU just kind of says that you get more info about necessary immunizations and background check in the spring. Unless you think you’re at risk for not having some of the major childhood immunizations, I wouldn’t be concerned about being gone for March at all.

Rejected. Guess interview didn’t go as well as I thought. I was shocked really. Wish they told me what was wrong during the interview as it’s hard to correct an error you don’t know you are making.

Sorry about that. You could try calling admissions. Some schools don’t give advice but when I called another school they gave me some so it may be worth a shot.

Could someone explain this CASPer stuff to me. Do I need to do it to be considered for an interview? Do they discuss it in the interview? Any advice on how to prepare for it. Going to take it ASAP, just wanted some insight. Thanks!

I was told somewhere (can't remember where), Casper is decided only if you take it for admissions purposes. It has no bearing on II or not. If I were you, I WOULD NOT take it. It can only hurt you.

I took Casper and interviewed at roughly half the schools that I sent the results to. I'm genuinely interested to see how I did.
